1-5 Texas Southern Tigers at 5-0 #19 Colorado Buffaloes - GAME THREAD

A couple of interesting notes on Texas Southern:

Basketball Prospectus has them favored to win the SWAC

Mike Davis was named the interim coach in July after Tony Harvey suddenly resigned (they will announce a permanent replacement after the season). This is the same Mike Davis that was the successor to Bobby Knight at Indiana.

A couple of 5-9 guys to watch tonight for Texas Southern. Raymond Penn sat out last year after transferring from Oklahoma St where he played 2 years getting significant minutes, he is averaging 16.2 pts but is only shooting 35% from the field. He is shooting it 30% of the time when he is on the floor, apparently trying to make up for all those missed games last year.

The other is another gunner in Omar Strong, shooting the ball on on 28% of TX SO possessions, averaging 8.7pts on 26% shooting.

Both of these guys are high volume shooters who shoot at a very poor percentage, lets hope that Ski and The Mayor keep it that way.

They've won 9 non-conference games against D-1 opponents since the start of the '04-'05 season. 9. Besides being an easy win, there's no purpose to them being on the schedule. Conference champion contenders or not, they're an RPI boat anchor.

Agreed they are terrible, but you have to schedule a few of these hopefully guaranteed W's. Scheduling these front range teams that want to knock off CU (AF, CSU & Wyoming) coupled with a trip to Lawrence, I'll take this cupcake mixed in there.

I don't think you need to go full cupcake to schedule wins. Certainly not with this team.

Anyone see this Tad quote.
"We have weapons inside. We have weapons outside. We can score in transition. We can score in the half court," coach Tad Boyle said. "When we make plays for each other, we're pretty good."
May be obvious but this team has some nice pieces all around.

Really looking forward to tonight - after the past 48 hours it is going to be great to get back to the Keg, feels like weeks since the AF game.

Says a lot that Tad is hyping his team in the media instead of trying to keep a lid on that. He must be very confident in what this squad can accomplish this season. I also think that he's in the process of transitioning the culture of this program from an underdog mentality to "we expect to win".

I think you are right NIk, it is time for the transition. Watching this team so far this year, they expect to win everytime out on the court. They have already demonstrated that they have a differnet mentatility. They would have lost a couple of these games last year. The pieces are in place to raise the expectations.

Yep, you simply have to have a few of these and I'd rather play a D1 opponent that wins their cupcake conference than playing Western State or Chadron State and not having it count at all. Or, the alternative of making our version of "cupcakes" teams like Northern Iowa, Wichita State and Saint Mary's and racking up numerous OOC losses.

TxSU was an improving program (maybe because of the infractions?) who was competitive in games with decent programs and was playing quite well for a SWAC team...then the near-death penalty sentence came. I think even their band (which was much better than the more hyped Grambling band) was suspended.

I think I just won two tickets to the game and I'm back in AZ now. Anyone want them? I'll see if I can put them under someones name.

17-8 Texas Southern. Buffs learning a lesson here: being ranked doesn't mean you just can come out and win. You're going to get everyone's best shot.

C'mon, Buffs- wake up. Strong is shooting a ridonkuous 3-ball though.
