ShaDon Brown recruiting. Official visit this weekend to potentially add much-needed safety depth.

This is a long story with Lamar Dawson from how he was a Syracuse signee for the 2014 recruiting class to how he ended up a 2018 JUCO transfer who it appears has 3 years of college eligibility remaining.

Here's the timeline as best as I can tell:

7/28/13 - Verbally committed to Syracuse

12/21/13 - Something wrong with his health & he gets tested for Leukemia after missing almost all school after Thanksgiving break. Eventually diagnosed with aplastic anemia.
https://www.mayoclinic.org/diseases-conditions/aplastic-anemia/symptoms-causes/syc-20355015
Overview

Aplastic anemia is a condition that occurs when your body stops producing enough new blood cells. Aplastic anemia leaves you feeling fatigued and with a higher risk of infections and uncontrolled bleeding.
A rare and serious condition, aplastic anemia can develop at any age. Aplastic anemia may occur suddenly, or it can occur slowly and get worse over a long period of time. Treatment for aplastic anemia may include medications, blood transfusions or a stem cell transplant, also known as a bone marrow transplant.
Symptoms

Aplastic anemia symptoms may include:
  • Fatigue
  • Shortness of breath with exertion
  • Rapid or irregular heart rate
  • Pale skin
  • Frequent or prolonged infections
  • Unexplained or easy bruising
  • Nosebleeds and bleeding gums
  • Prolonged bleeding from cuts
  • Skin rash
  • Dizziness
  • Headache
Aplastic anemia can progress slowly over weeks or months, or it may come on suddenly. The illness may be brief, or it may become chronic. Aplastic anemia can be very severe and even fatal.

Timeline, continued.

February 2014 - Signed LOI, but Dawson and Syracuse agree to talk in May about the plan after he has begun treatment.

May 2014 - Dawson and Syracuse decide to delay his enrollment until January 2015 as a greyshirt.

January 2015 - Enrollment pushed back until summer to give him more time to heal.

June 2015 - Planned to enroll at Syracuse (had weaned off medication & gotten his speed back). Syracuse told him his scholarship was no longer valid but that he could attend Midwestern Prep Academy in Overton, IL as a prep school year (doesn't impact eligibility clock) that would be an opportunity to prove that he still had it. If so, he could join Syracuse as soon as January 2016 as a true freshman.

Fall 2015 - It appears that Dawson chose not to go to Midwestern Prep. (I think this is accurate.) For a bit, it looked like he would get a full ride to Northern Illinois but it didn't materialize. Announces he will attend City College of San Francisco (JUCO).

2016/17 Academic Year - Considered going to City College of San Francisco. Ended up choosing Mt. SAC but spent the year working out and redshirted.

Fall 2017 - Attends Mt. SAC juco and plays football as a Safety. BIO. In 11 games, Dawson makes 51 tackles to go with 4 interceptions.

February 2018 - Officially visits Colorado as a spring graduate with 3 years to play 3. (Possibly a 4 years to play 3 if he didn't actually enroll at City College of SF and is transferring as a full qualifier instead of as a JC graduate.)

I really liked the film from Mt SAC. And it goes without saying that I'm rooting for this young man.

MacIntyre likes to say that without the struggle there's no story. Well, this is one hell of a story. And it deserves the right type of ending.

Man, that's scary business. Can't imagine being an accomplished athlete in high school, getting ready to head off to college on scholarship, and then getting hit with such a serious condition. No need to welcome him to the fight, he's been in it for awhile now.
