The short answer is that it seems you know what you've got in a coaching staff by year two.
I was curious to see how the rest of the 2011 coaching changes looked after two years. (one and a half really)
There were 21 coaching changes in 2011. Of those, there are 4 coaches who have not improved their records over both their predecessor and their first year.
I think we can all agree that, despite his dropping numbers, David Shaw is doing a fine job at Stanford. That leaves Embree as one of 3 coaches that has come in and completely **** the bed.
Some other random info.
Of the 21 coaches hired, only 7 came in and posted an improved record over the previous coach in their first year (5 of these 7 saw a drop between the first year and second year). 12 of the coaches improved their record between their first and second years.
There are still 4-6 games to play in the second years for these coaches so things could vary a bit. But, it seems to me that the second year is where you see the benefit from the coaching staff with almost 60% of the 2011 hires showing improvement by the second year.
