2012-13 Colorado Buffaloes vs Utah Basketball game thread

This game is about as must win as they get. After playing themselves back on to the bubble with a loss to ASU over the weekend the Buffs need to hold serve at home the rest of the way and finish out at least 3-2 to have a good shot at the Tournament. Utah beat us in an ugly slug-fest in Salt Lake a few weeks ago and the Buffs absolutely have to win this game in order to stay on the right side of the bubble. As of yet (11am) we still have no news on Josh Scott and his availability for tonight, so expect Shane Harris-Tunks to start.

Rumblin's Preview

ESPN Bubble Watch agrees with what most have been saying about what it would take at minimum to avoid much worry of simply getting in

Colorado [17-8 (7-6), RPI: 21, SOS: 7] Colorado's home split last week -- the Buffs handled Arizona and fell to Arizona State by one -- may end up being the best thing for the conference in general: The Buffaloes' strong computer numbers and relative lack of bad losses mean they can afford to lose at home to ASU and not have to worry too much about the repercussions. Avoiding bad losses to Utah and Oregon State down the stretch is really the only worry here.

RealTimeRPI predicts CU wins 77-57. 82.3% chance of winning, but of course they don't factor Scott into the equation. CU enters tonight with an RPI of 23, Utah 170

Purely speculation, but I think we see a lot of small lineups and pressing without Scott to get the tempo up. Utah can't play fast. We'll see plenty of SHT too, but the key is getting this game up tempo.

Agree. Push pace in this one. Make it guard-dominated. Make rebounds occur out of transition versus halfcourt sets.

Rumblin just RT'd someone that said that CU's official site has probable starters as Mayor, Ski, Chen, XJ & Dre.

I saw that on the game notes as well goose. Like absinthe said, this is about as must win as they get down the stretch (In addition to OSU).
This team seems to play with revenge on its mind, and this is at home so I'm not too concerned, but being without jelly is not going to help anything. Shane said in the DP today that if he starts "he's got to worry about picking up too many fouls too quickly", which is something I also worry about him doing. Occasionally he seems to let his emotions get the best of him and commit a dumb foul. After him, it's ben mills for a big guy, or move someone like stalzer or XT in and using mayor, chen, XJ, dre and ski most of the way. Nothing bad about that line up, and it'd be great to get XT or eli some minutes, but we dont want to make mistakes that let them back in the game down the stretch (like they were doing when we were there)

Just as a refresher, Scott was not particularly effective against Utah the first go around. Not a great matchup for him. Played 22 minutes, 5 points, 3 boards, 2 fouls. The loss at Utah was also during one of Ski's slumps, he was 3/14.

Agree with the previous comments that we need to push the pace a bit, try and play this on our terms. Buffs should be able to end up with a relatively comfortable win, but the reality is that Utah is a pesky team that doesn't just lay down and die. This is a team that has lost to Arizona twice by a combined 7 points including a 3 point loss in Tucson, beat Arizona State by 5 in SLC and lost by 1 in OT in Tempe, they won at Washington by 9. You've got to come to play against these Utes and deliver a knock out punch -not literally, a message Arizona State never got- or else they'll just hang right around.

Just to hammer home the pace thing. Utah plays at the slowest pace in the conference, averaging just shy of 63 possessions a game. In the first Utah/CU game each team had 59 possessions (second lowest of the season for CU).

So yeah, small lineup tonight, lets push the pace.

Utah had 10,977 when CU visited. Granted, it was a Saturday, but still

Don't forget ... it was also the day they were hanging Rick Majerus' sweater from the rafters, with a whole bunch of Ute stars coming back for the ceremony.

That's probably for the best. We only have 1 game this week, and he can take like 12 days off after a concussion instead of playing him tonight. No need to put him in recklessly and have him get another concussion. We'll need him more in the pac12 tourney than we do tonight.

Just in case anyone forgot butt****hinskis brother plays for Utah here's hoping someone rakes his head off with a hard foul

Not a bad first half, really got after it on the defensive end. Just have to make more shots when we get the open looks.

After all that, we lead by 2 at the half. More than his size, we're really missing the additional depth Jelly brings. This team is pretty limited offensively tonight.
