2012 Offensive Line

Several interviews with recruits have quoted prospects as saying that David Bakhtiari is moving inside to LG. That fits with the philosophy of the coaching staff on tackles (wanting guys who are 6'5" or taller at the tackle spots) and also is a good move for Bakhtiari since guard will be his position in the NFL.

Lewis seems to be the favorite to take over the LT spot.

Here's my best guess of our OL depth chart heading into spring:

LT- Lewis (Nembot pushing)
LG- Bakhtiari (he owns this)
C- Handler (Munyer pushing w/ Handler maybe moving to RG if Munyer wins the battle)
RG- Asiata (Crabb pushing)
RT- Harris (Mustoe pushing)

Swing player is Dannewitz, who can be our veteran who is able to plug in at any spot other than Center if we have an injury or failure.

A lot of question marks. We will also be lighter than we would like unless a number guys put on 15-25 lbs in the offseason.

There is definitely talent and athleticism there. I also see more competition and depth. Plus, some nastiness is developing in the trenches.

My biggest concerns are over Harris returning from injury and the overall youth of the group. Right now, it looks like we'll be starting 2 or 3 junior with 2 or 3 sophomores. It's setting up as an excellent OL in 2013, but I'm worried about 2012. Let's hope they can mature and gel a year early.

what about cotner?

Cotner will compete. I don't think he goes into spring as part of the 2-deep at Center, though. I didn't intend to slight him, but I could see how it could look that way (or that I forgot him). I guess I did mention all the other returning OLs.

Bak has played well at tackle in both years. Not sure why moving him inside is a good move for his future prospects but I'll keep an open mind

The center position should be a good battle between Handler and Munyer

This is one group that I'm looking forward to next year. A step up from past OLs we've had, even if they are younger and a bit smaller I think they will be able to be more competitive. Experience isn't always plus. We had one of the more experienced OLs last year and they could never seen to get a push, but somehow we did well in pass blocking.

Subtle but interesting shift of Bakhtiari going inside.

I'd like to see Harris and Lewis battle out for LT. Whoever comes in 2nd would slot in at RT. I don't think Nembot and Mustoe are going to be ready to challenge for playing time and would be worried if we had an injury to one of the starters.

Any chance that Asiata will get a look at tackle?

LG has been the sieve in our line for too long. If we get solid tackle play while also moving Bakh to LG that could be the "rising tide" that lifts all ships on the O-line.

I also think Crabb is ready to challenge for a starter spot at one of the guard spots.

I endorse absolutely nothing in this post!

I do wonder if Lewis will be pushed by Nembot. He is the closest thing on the OL to "looking the part of NFL tackle". I'm sure he's raw, but he's insanely athletic and very, very smart. I would not be surprised if he takes a giant leap. He's got 30 pounds on Lewis based on the eyeball weigh-in.

I was hoping Harris would move inside to guard, have Crabb and Asiata battle for the other gaurd position, Handler and Munyer battle for center, and Lewis/Dannewitz/Nembot/Mustoe battling for the final tackle spot. Bakhtiari has been great at tackle, and I am not a big fan of starting someone new at LT

Harris has never looked the part of a LT to me. He is a mauler more than a technician, tough more than athletic. I am very comfortable keeping him at RT and letting him develop there. We saw this year what happens when a tackle get exposed, it ain't pretty.

Nembot needs another year before he is ready IMO, but he is a potential star.

More than anything, I agree with several points here. First, we need to stay more healthy than this season. Losing both tackles for multiple games set us back this season. Second, we need to be bigger up front. Not sure it will happen as soon as this season, but it needs to happen sooner rather than later.

I agree with you on Nembot and Mustoe. We need to give those guys a couple years to develop. I think the entire staff knew moving Nembot to the OL was going to be a huge project. Can't rush those things. At least normally.

I'm not sure what to think about Crabb. I think he was at center during garbage time in games. I also saw him at G. Can't remember what side.

The OL is really easy to hype up. I know I fall into this trap every year.

LT- Bakthiari(It makes no sense to move a 2nd team all pac 12 to guard and play an undersized lineman that has not proved anything in College in placeof him)
LG- Asiata
C- Handler
RG- Crabb or 'Munyer or Harris
RT- Daniewitz

Backups
LT- Daniewitz or Nembot or Mustoe or Harris or , Lewis
LG- Munyer or Harris or Crabb
C- Crabb or Munyer or Kelly or Cotner
RG- Munyer or Harris or Crabb or Cotner or Kelly
RT- Harris or Nembot or Mustoe or Lewis

Crabb really did not impress me last year in his limited snaps. He seemed to be a carbon copy of Adkins in fact.

If the coaches are seriously going to displace Bakhtiari for Lewis, then they must be damn high on Lewis.

We absolutely can't afford any injuries along the OL next year. Ugh.

Next years O-Line is like 2011's defensive backfield. It does set us up for a fun 2013!

I'm not sure its that bad. Miller is a big loss but Adkins can be easily replaced.

Depending on whether we have a young tackle that can play ,I think the line could be much better next year.

O-line is going to be one of the bright spots of the 2012 Buffs... now breaking in new qb and rb's thats the issue on the offensive side of the ball - the D is going to be much improved I think - 1 corner spot? and the D-line? we will see

It's too bad Harris got injured. That experience he missed will hurt early next year especially if we haver 2 other brand new starters

LT- Lewis (Nembot pushing)
LG- Bakhtiari (he owns this)
C- Handler (Munyer pushing w/ Handler maybe moving to RG if Munyer wins the battle)
RG- Asiata (Crabb pushing)
RT- Harris (Mustoe pushing)

Lewis - 48 career plays, 54.2% grade
Nembot - 0 career plays
Bakhtiari - 1,426 career plays, 87.5% grade
Handler - 613 career plays, 81.6% grade
Munyer - 205 career plays, 76.1% grade
Asiata - 41 career plays, 68.3% grade
Crabb - 77 career plays, 67.5% grade
Harris - 109 career plays, 81.7% grade
Mustoe - 0 career plays
Dannewitz - 800 career plays, 79.8% grade

I think we'll see this:
LT - Bakhtiari
LG - Munyer
C - Handler
RG - Harris
RT - Dannewitz

I think Handler wins the center spot due in large part to his experience. I remember AZ saying the coaches think Munyer is very talented so I think he'll find a way on to the field. We may not see Harris right away based on how he recovers, but he may move inside to put an older (and somewhat more experienced) player on the field as opposed to Asiata.

where you getting those grades?

Anybody know if Givens has any shot at returning? He was at the Spring game last year, then proceeded to get in some serious trouble again. I hate to see that much talent go to waste.

Nembot and Asiata will both be starters on the line next year. Without knowing what the coaches will do with Bakhtiari it's hard to say where they'll slot in, but I expect to see both starting.

We may see Bak at guard simply because Embree and EB may want to do some things that require much more out of the guards in terms of technique and assignment. Bak is easily our best O-lineman in terms of those characteristics plus he brings a consistency and an attitude that the coaches may want on the inside.

Nothing? damn that's harsh!

Not even the "LG has been a sieve"? gimme something...

I hate to say this but if Dannewitz is our starting RT, we are in trouble.
