As with the other Olympic sports, wanted to start a thread to report and discuss any news for the skiing Buffs.

To start this thread off STRONG- HUGE congrats to Mikaela Tommy for her well-earned BIG honor!

DENVER—Mikaela Tommy was named the National Women's Alpine Skier of the Year by the United States Collegiate Ski Coaches Association, the organization announced Monday.

Tommy, a senior from Wakefield, Quebec, dominated this season, especially in GS action. She finished six of seven GS races on the season with five wins and one second place. Her first career DNF (did not finish) in GS action was at the NCAA Championships, a race she was favored to do very well in if not win. In all, she had nine podium appearances in 10 finished races on the season.

Her five wins this season in GS would be enough to be CU's career leader in GS wins. She also won three GS races in 2019, giving her eight in her career, double more than any other women's alpine skier in program history. She won four consecutive GS races as in 2020 and three in 2019, the two best marks in CU history.

She was named the Women's Alpine Skier of the Year and won the Women's Alpine MVP based on the regular season NCAA Qualification point totals, and was the RMISA Individual Champion in the GS. She was the top GS qualifier out of the RMISA for the NCAA Championships and No. 5 on the slalom list and the No. 2 overall seed. She was also the start list points leader for GS and fifth for slalom in the 2020 season.

She matched the CU record set by Lucie Zikova by winning eight runs during the season, as she took six GS runs and two slalom runs during the season. Along with teammate Stef Fleckenstein, the two became the third and fourth skiers and the fourth and fifth instance of women's alpine skiers winning multiple runs in both disciplines in a season.

Tommy is CU's second National Athlete of the Year for this season, joining Dani Jones, who was named the Track & Field National Athlete of the Year by the USTFCCCA last month.

Other skiers honored by the Ski Coaches Association were Joachim Lein (Utah, men's alpine), Guro Jordheim (Utah, women's Nordic) and Ben Ogden (Vermont, men's Nordic). Middlebury's Stever Bartlett was named the National Alpine Coach of the Year and Vermont's Patrick Weaver the National Nordic Coach of the Year.

Nice article on a CU legend. (As a past AD, could probably go in a thread related to most any CU sport, but putting it here since skiing was his own sport at CU.)

Release: April 09, 2020

Note: This is the first of what will be an on-going series of stories on those who have impacted the Colorado Ski program. A skimeister is an award that was presented to the best overall skier in a meet in both alpine and Nordic events. As skiers became specialized throughout the 1960s, the award died out of college skiing in 1970. For this series, we're using it to describe CU legends in their own right, regardless of if they actually participated in both Nordic and alpine.

BOULDER—Few sports programs in the United States have had as big an impact on their sport as the Colorado Ski Team has had on skiing. And few people have had as great an impact on their program as Bill Marolt has had on the Colorado Ski Team.

A four-time Individual National Champion and 1964 Olympian, Marolt's exploits when he was at CU as a student-athlete would be enough to qualify as a CU Ski Legend, but that's only the tip of the iceberg.

As head coach, he took over a program that had lost its way just two years after graduating from CU and immediately started building a program that would eventually win eight straight championships, seven of which he coached. Legend status.

As athletic director, he hired two coaches, Richard Rokos (skiing) and Mark Wetmore (cross country and track & field), who would surpass his own total of seven national championships while also extending the contract of Bill McCartney as football coach, who won another national championship. Legend status.

Looking beyond CU, he also had three stints with skiing at the national level. His sophomore season at CU in 1964, he was an Olympian, part of the 1964 team coached by Bob Beattie where the USA saw its first success on the world level. In 1978, he left his coaching position at CU to become the head coach of the national team, leading the USA team in the 1980 and 1984 Olympics. He returned to CU to become Athletic Director in 1984, and in 1996 returned as President of the United States Ski and Snowboard Association, where he led the United States to unprecedented success, retiring in 2014.

When he had retired from the USSA as a coach and administrator, he was responsible for 70 of the 95 Olympic Medals that Team USA had secured since 1924. At CU, he is part of 24 of the Buffs' 29 National Championships. That's not counting Tim Hinderman, who skied for Marolt and replaced him in 1979 and led the Buffs to three more National Championships before 1983, meaning his finger prints are in 27 of CU's 29 titles.
...

In an era when dynasties no longer exist in college skiing (after Denver won seven straight and 14 of the first 18 titles and CU responded with eight straight in the 1970s, no team has won more than three straight championships in the last 40 years), Rokos has been a mainstay and dynasty in his own right.

"Honestly, I can't imagine the University of Colorado without a ski team," Marolt said. "All the people who have been such a big part of the success and continue to give back and support the program have made it something very special. One of the things that has always been impressive is the tremendous alumni group that has been part of CU skiing for so many years. It's been one of those consistent threads, part of the fabric of the athletic department, for the last 50 or 60 years."

Indeed, that consistent thread is epitomized by the annual CU Ski Ball fundraiser.

"This will be the 50th anniversary of the Ski Ball," Marolt said. "If you think about all the events on a campus, all the events that come and go, and then consider Ski Ball has been around for 50 years, it's amazing. Not many events survive for even 15 years, especially fundraisers, but that speaks to the passion of the alumni of the program and how they want to give back. It's a special program that's a big part of the University of Colorado."

There are no doubt challenges ahead, but one thing is for sure. Bill Marolt is a legend. Several times over.

In an article out a couple days ago that also announced the 2020/21 freshman class, along with one transfer, the team also announced a preliminary schedule.

...
In other news, the RMISA released a preliminary schedule for the 2021 season. Weinberger, the RMISA President, said "We understand this is a preliminary schedule. As an outdoor sport with mostly interval timing competitions, we believe college skiing can safely take place and adapt to COVID-19 protocols. But we also understand all schools are working with reduced budgets and ski areas and venues where we compete will be operating with their own set of fluid rules and expectations and that any schedule we put out now will be nothing but preliminary."

The Buffs are not on the calendar to host a competition in 2021. As it stands now, there will be two complete invitationals, Denver and Utah, two alpine only meets (Westminster College, Colorado Mountain College) and one Nordic meet (Alaska Fairbanks). The University of Alaska is set to host the RMISA Championships and Middlebury College will serve as host of the NCAA Championships. Check out the complete preliminary schedule.

Official schedule (of course, I assume, contingent and fluid due to the pandemic) is now out! (Hope/ assume other Olympic sports' schedules should also be coming out relatively soon.)
