Thought I'd start this thread now that we can use to post any general (spans more than one CU sport) academic news throughout this academic year (through the summer 2022 semester).

1st off- sounds like another good semester overall for the Buff student-athletes

Congrats to all involved!

BOULDER – University of Colorado student-athletes have continued to perform extremely well in the classroom in grade point average statistics compiled by CU's Herbst Academic Center staff, all the while at the same time dealing with the many distractions all CU students have had to concern themselves with over the past two years.

The grade point average for the recently completed fall 2021 semester for 385 CU student-athletes was 3.117, the second-best fall semester GPA on record. That help boost the cumulative grade point average to 3.110, the fourth straight semester above a 3.0. And also for the fourth straight semester, 13 of CU's 15 programs (indoor and outdoor track count as one) owned cumulative GPA's of 3.0 or higher.

The academic staff started charting these numbers in the spring of 1996.

For the fourth straight semester, all CU students continued to face challenges due to the COVID pandemic, including classes often in hybrid from between being held in-person or remotely. CU suffered minimal COVID cases during the 2020-21 academic year, but with the variants more were affected during the fall term, simultaneously with NIL (Name, Image and Likeness) coming into play. But as always, CU's Herbst Academic Center staff once again did an incredible job aiding the students in balancing their athletic and academic responsibilities.

"Our student-athletes have continued to shine in the classroom despite all the distractions they have had to encounter over the last two years," athletic director Rick George said. "I am proud that as a group that they have consistently posted impressive numbers, they have also continually improved on those as well. It is a team effort between our Herbst Academic staff, our coaches and our student-athletes, and I also should commend the university faculty members for all they have had to endure in this same period of time."

"We have worked hard to create a culture that includes expectations of academic success," said Kris Livingston, CU's executive senior associate athletic director for student success. 'Rick George expects it, our coaches expect it, and the Herbst Academic Center staff expects it. Our student-athletes are great competitors, and they compete in the classroom just as much as they compete in their sport."

It marked the 15th straight semester dating back to the fall '14 term for the grade point to exceed 2.9 (which had happened just once prior). The men's track and field team members recorded their best grade point for a semester, spring or fall, with a 3.111 mark; three other teams logged their best-ever averages for a fall term: men's cross country (3.354), men's golf (3.194) and football (2.833).

For the fall term, 29 student-athletes owned 4.00 grade point averages, with 137 owning 3.5 or higher GPA's (36 percent). Of the 385 student-athletes overall, 238 athletes came in at 3.0 or better and overall (62 percent) with 80 percent (309) logged in at 2.5 or higher. Cumulatively speaking, the second-highest percentage was recorded for those with grade points of 3.5-plus (119, or 31 percent) and the third-highest for those at the 3.0 level (236, 61 percent) and for those at 2.5 or better (324, or 84 percent).

The 3.500 term grade point recorded by the 25 members of the women's cross country team and the 17 athletes on the men's ski team topped all programs in the fall, the first time there has been a tie for the honor for the fall semester. The women's harriers have now posted a 3.5 or better number for six of the last eight semesters, while the skiers have achieved that mark or better five straight terms.

Other impressive numbers include:

I saw yesterday that Zoe Neverdowski, Taylor Deprosse, Meegan Hart, Jenna Ewert and Brynna DeLuzio all graduated in December. All the best to them in their future endeavors.

I had been waiting to see if the department was going to post an article about the 16 December 2021 grads, but since I can't find one, I'm going to post the individual tweets they sent out last week acknowledging all the now degreed Buffs.
(Given the limits on tweets allowed per post on Allbuffs, assume this will be the 1st of 4 or so posts, with tweets in alphabetical order of the graduates.)

BIG congrats to all!!!

Congrats to all!
(The below tweet is the 1st of many that announce the various honorees at this morning's academic recognition breakfast. Assume there will be an article soon, which I also plan on posting.)

CONGRATS AND BEST WISHES TO ALL!!!

And, thanks for the entertainment you've given us, and for all the work and passion you've put into your sports!

(With each sport getting a separate post, I'll probably have to break this up into 3 posts.)

Golfers all getting finance degrees made me chuckle.

Congrats to all of the student athlete Buffs!

BOULDER – Graduate student Joey Young was named second-team CoSIDA Academic All-America on its At-Large team Tuesday, continuing to add to his impressive list of academic accomplishments as a member of the Colorado Buffaloes Ski Team.

Young was named to the third team after his senior season a year ago, and is the sixth member of the ski team to earn Academic All-America honors and is one of 67 honorees in CU history. He is just the second two-time honoree from the CU ski team.

Young graduated from the Leeds School of Business with degrees in both Accounting and Finance prior to the start of his fifth season, which he was granted due to the COVID-19 Pandemic. He was CU's Scholar Athlete winner as having the top GPA of all senior male student-athletes at Colorado.

Young was accepted into graduate school at CU and worked toward a Master's Degree in Finance for the 2021-22 school year, earning a perfect 4.0 GPA.

On the slopes, he set new CU standards for race starts (60), finishes (49) and accumulated 39 top 20 finishes including 20 top 10, seven top five with three podiums and two race wins. He is also the first known five-time letterwinner in program history.

Young is one of three skiers to earn mention on the first, second or third team along with Utah's Samuel Hendry and Montana State's Riley Seger. To put into perspective how hard it is to make the CoSIDA All-America At-Large team, more than 400 skiers nationally boast above a 3.5 cumulative GPA and were named to the National All-Academic Ski Team by the United States Collegiate Ski Coaches Association. The At-Large team combines 26 NCAA sponsored sports and District 7 consists of all institutions in eight states, Colorado, Idaho, Kansas, Nebraska, New Mexico, Nevada, Oklahoma and Texas. Literally thousands of student-athletes are academically eligible for the at-large program every season.

Young joins Kelly McCann (1996), Ondrej Valentina (1998), Linda Wikstrom (2000), Andreas Haug (2013, '14), and Rune Oedegaard (2015) as Academic All-Americans for the Buffs ski team.

SAN FRANCISCO—The Pac-12 announced 24 outstanding Pac-12 student-athletes who have been named recipients of Pac-12 Postgraduate Scholarships for the 2021-22 academic year, and Andrea Arnold (skiing) and Aaron McCoy (track & field) picked up the honor for the University of Colorado.

The scholarships, worth $9,000 each, are awarded to two student-athletes from each Pac-12 school annually. The student-athletes must maintain above a 3.0 grade point average and have demonstrated a commitment to education, campus and community involvement, and leadership.

Arnold lettered three time in skiing for the Buffs, skiing in 48 of a possible 58 races over five years, finishing 37 of those with 31 top 20 and nine top 10 performances. After graduating from CU with a degree in Integrative Physiology and minor in Spanish, Arnold was accepted to the Charles University Medical School in Prague, Czech Republic, where she's earning a doctorate of medicine. She was born in Boulder, but holds dual citizenship in the Czech Republic.

He remained at CU for his postgraduate studies in the College of Media, Communication and Information (CMCI) working towards a master's degree in Strategic Communication Design.
