Buff Women's basketball (1-0 this season; last season - 22-9 overall, 9-7 in conference play, #32 NET ranking) starts a 3 game in 5 day stretch of games as one of four teams participating in the Pre-season WNIT Tournament. They start tomorrow (Saturday) afternoon hosting the Jackson State Tigers (0-1 this season; last season - 23-7 overall, 18-0 in the SWAC, #85 NET), and then travel to Lubbock Texas to face off against the Louisiana (out of Lafayette) Ragin' Cajuns (1-0 this season; last season - 18-7 overall, 9-4 in the SBC, #150 NET ranking) on Tuesday afternoon, and completing their tournament play with a game against the Texas Tech Red Raiders (1-0 this season; last season - 11-19 overall, 4-14 in Big 12 conference play,, #82 NET ranking) Wednesday evening. (Looks like the tourney overall won't end until next Sunday, as that's when Tech is scheduled to play Louisiana.)

As of now, I don't see any indication Tuesday's game will have any video coverage, but tomorrow's is scheduled to be available via a Colorado provided live stream, while Wednesday's is showing on being on ESPN+. (All games do show having audio available. Further info and links for media options available near the bottom of this thread.)

BOULDER – The 1-0 Colorado Buffaloes will look to continue its quick start to the season, welcoming in Jackson State on Saturday (2 p.m. MT).

The Buffs sprinted out of the gate with a 30-point win over New Mexico State to open the season on Monday. Senior Quay Miller helped lead the charge with 22 points and 17 rebounds. CU shot 57.4% from the field and 50.0% from 3-point range against the Aggies. The Buffs' bench combined for 27 points on the night.

One of the few lowlights of the opener was the team's 20 turnovers, a number that will have to shrink as the season grows older.

"We definitely want to take care of the ball more effectively than we did on Monday," head coach JR Payne commented. "I also think we can improve our overall communication. We're trying to grow and have the ability to talk through things. There are so many new things that can happen when you have new players playing a lot. Being able to talk our way through that live in the moment, is something that we've been working on a lot this week."

Senior Jaylyn Sherrod and Miller are two of the team's veterans that have been tasked with stepping into bigger leadership roles this season. The duo helped guide the Buffs through a shaky start to Monday's contest. NM State opened on a 6-0 run, while the Buffs started 0-for-4 shooting.

The Buffs got back on track with a 21-0 run, setting the table for the remainder of the night.

"We've been talking a lot about our poise in practice," Payne added. "What are we going to do when things aren't going our way? How do we respond? Who is going to step up and communicate what needs to be communicated? I thought our veterans did a good job of that and kind of keeping people calm and cool in the timeouts and halftime."

Jackson State fell to North Carolina to start its season but had a historic run in 2022-23. The Tigers finished 23-7 and went undefeated (18-0) in the SWAC. The Tigers finished fourth in the NCAA last season with 47.2 rebounds per game and 79.5 points per game.

JSU, like Colorado, fell in the first round of the NCAA Tournament last season.

"They are really athletic from top to bottom," Payne added. "They can run, jump defend and rebound. I think we're going to have to have a different mindset. Luckily, we've played a couple of relatively athletic teams going into this game, but I think in a lot of ways they [Jackson State] have top to bottom more athleticism than we normally see."

Saturday's game will be streamed on CUBuffs.com/WatchWBB. Cory Lopez and Carol Callan will have the call on the stream and the Colorado Radio Network.
"

Buffs got the lead up to double figures while I believe holding Jackson State scoreless for ~6 minutes, then CU goes scoreless the last 3-4 minutes of the half. They still lead 29-23 at the half.

Like the 1st game, the Buffs kept expanding the lead, especially in the 2nd half, and end up cruising to a 77-53 win.

With back to back games coming up Tuesday and Wednesday, sure the coaches like that, due to the lead built up, they were able to make it so no Buff had to play 30 minutes tonight.

BOULDER – Colorado scored 48 points in the second half to pull away from Jackson State, 77-53, in the first game of the Preseason WNIT at the CU Events Center on Saturday.

Colorado improved to 2-0 in the early season and has held both opponents to 55 points or less to start the season.

Junior Frida Formann totaled 15 of her game-high 17 points in the second half, helping the Buffaloes expand their six-point halftime lead. Colorado's lead grew to 26 in the fourth quarter to keep the visiting Tigers far from striking distance.

"I'm just really proud of how we played," head coach JR Payne explained. "This is a difficult game for us. We don't see that style of play. There is a multitude of athletes on the floor at once and I was really proud of how we responded. We really competed in the areas that we wanted to compete in. I think that's a really good basketball team. I think Jackson State is going to win a ton of games. They should be a tournament team again, they're very good. I think that we played really well and responded to a really good team coming into Boulder."

Sophomore Aaronette Vonleh reached double figures for the first time in her CU career, totaling 13 points on the afternoon. Senior Quay Miller had the hot hand early, totaling 11 of her 13 points in the first half. Freshman Jada Wynn shot 3-for-4 from the field and made two 3-pointers, contributing 10 points and five rebounds.

"I think everyone's really confident in each other," Payne expressed. "We know that Nettie [Aaronette] can score inside. We know Frida can score outside. We also know Quay, Tameiya [Sadler], Tay [Jones], Jaylyn [Sherrod], Kindyll [Wetta] and everyone that is playing can bring something positive, offensively and defensively, to the floor."

Jackson State held a 45-38 advantage on the glass, with Daphane White leading the Tigers with 12 points and nine rebounds. They limited the Tigers to just three assists on their 16 field goals. JSU coughed the ball up 20 times, helping CU total 20 points off the mishaps.

"We wanted to pressure, we wanted to try to create some turnovers," Payne continued. "We felt like we could do that. I think we communicated well, defensively. I thought there were some different actions that we hadn't necessarily seen that we had to guard, but I thought our communication was on point. We were a defensive team. We'd love to play defense. I think we did that well tonight."
...

"I think we have a lot of good pieces on the floor," Formann said. "I think we've improved our shooting from our guard spots. That just opens up the floor so much more. When our posts run the floor in transition that's when we get those easy shots. There's a lot of things team-wise that make the shots much easier."

Turning Point
Jackson State used a 5-0 run to get within eight, 40-32, with 4:31 to play in the third quarter. Wynn and Wetta combined for back-to-back 3's that started a 13-4 close to the third quarter and the Buffs' lead never dipped below 11 the remainder of the day.

Up Next
Colorado will hit the road for the first time in 2022-23 as it continued with the WNIT. The Buffaloes will take on Louisiana on Tuesday and Texas Tech on Wednesday in Lubbock, Texas.

Notes
The win on Saturday was career win No. 96 for Coach Payne at CU and No. 197 in her career…CU's two wins this season have both been by 20+ points…It's the first time CU has had back-to-back 20+ wins since a stretch of four games last year (Dixie State, Southern Utah, SMU, San Francisco)…CU has shot over 50% in the second half of both games this season (78.3% vs NM State and 51.4% vs JSU)…The Buffs have had 19 assists in each of their first two games this season…Sherrod had five assists and now has 315 in her career (17th CU).

Preview for the couple of games over the next 2 days - https://cubuffs.com/news/2022/11/14...ffs-return-to-lubbock-for-preseason-wnit.aspx

"
LUBBOCK, Texas – It has been over a decade since the Colorado women's basketball team made the voyage to northwest Texas. "Avatar" was the top-grossing movie and "Tik Tok" by Ke$ha was the No. 1 song in America.

It was January 10, 2010. The Buffaloes, led by then-head coach Kathy McConnel-Miller, made their final Big 12 Conference stop in Lubbock. Bianca Smith led CU with 18 points off the bench in a losing effort, 74-61. TTU made one final trip to Boulder in 2011 before the 22-game series came to a halt.

That will change this week when the Buffs and Lady Raiders remake acquaintances in the final game of the Preseason WNIT on Wednesday (6 p.m. MT). But first, the Buffaloes will take on Louisiana, a recent WNIT foe, on Tuesday (3:30 p.m.)

"I think there's probably only three or four of our players that would remember that game [against Louisiana]," head coach JR Payne commented. "But [we] definitely [remember] the style of play – undersized, really athletic, scrappy and tough. They take a ton of chargers and try to frustrate you defensively. All those things I think we remember."

One Buff that had a memorable game against the Ragin' Cajuns in that 2021 WNIT game was Frida Formann. Formann, then a freshman, posted 14 points and made four 3-pointers in CU's 68-45 win in Collierville, Tenn. Tayanna Jones and Charlotte Whittaker are the two other remaining Buffs from the 2021 WNIT.

The Buffs will play back-to-back games, taking on Texas Tech a little more than 24 hours after tip-off against the Ragin' Cajuns. Colorado will look at the early-season test as a chance to showcase the team's depth.

"We need to focus on what we're doing well right now," Payne explained about the quick turnaround. "I feel like we are really deep. We'll be able to showcase our depth, but it's definitely going to be important because playing back-to-back is really difficult at this level. I think it's good for us that we do have depth that we trust and believe in."

Colorado hasn't fared well in its previous eight trips to Lubbock. The Buffs are 1-7 on the road against their former Big 12 rivals and just 5-17 overall. The Lady Raiders are off to a 1-0 start this season, looking to improve on their 11-19 finish a year ago.

While the two teams haven't played in 12 years, there is a fraction of familiarity between the two programs.

"We don't even play a lot of the same opponents so it's not like you see them play very much," Payne explained. "Interestingly, we've recruited some of their players. There's a little bit of familiarity with that. I think that's going to be a really fun matchup between the two old Big 12 teams."

Both of Colorado's games in Lubbock will be streamed online at CUBuffs.com/WatchWBB. Cory Lopez and Carol Callan will be on the stream Tuesday. On Wednesday, Ron Thulin and Brandi Poole will be on the call for ESPN+. Both games will be on the Colorado Radio Network.

Buffs started slow and I believe only got their 1st points with ~4 minutes left in the 1st quarter, but end the quarter on a 12 point run to lead 12-5 after 1.

Great shooting 2nd quarter, featuring a .600 percentage overall and even better, .750 (6-8), from 3 leads to a big 39-13 Buff halftime lead. The defense, obviously playing tough by only allowing 13 points against a YOUNG Louisiana squad, forced 11 turnovers in the half and that lead to an 8-0 advantage in points off turnovers.

Per the announcers (it's the Buff radio crew calling the action on the ESPN+ stream), the Buffs already had their 2nd 21 scoring run of the season from roughly the middle of the 1st quarter through midway of the 2nd quarter. (they also had that big of a run in the 1st game.)

Louisiana got a LITTLE traction late in the 3rd quarter, but it's still a very comfortable 59-27 Buff lead heading into the final quarter. Expect to see a lot of subs to finish it off (although the 2 main sub bigs for the Buffs have 4 fouls).

And 73-43 is the final.

NICE 1st road (or technically neutral) game of the season for the Buffs!

(Just for reference (thanks to the Buff announcer for mentioning it 1st), although it looks like the game got away from them late as they ended up losing by 23, Louisiana in its last game before today was within 10 points of #3 Texas ~1/2 way through the 4th quarter.)

It's a team we should beat by double digits, but it's also a team with a pulse. Solid win. Took care of business.

Media after yesterday's win.

(Also, of course every game is its own thing, but looks like the Buffs should be favorites in its scheduled game this evening against host Texas Tech, at least based on common opponent. Jackson State, who as this thread noted the Buffs handled by 24 this past Saturday in Boulder, defeated Texas Tech by 6 yesterday 69-63.)

LUBBOCK, Texas – Colorado struggled in the early moments against Louisiana, going more than half the first quarter without getting to the basket to start against Louisiana. Once the Buffaloes got going, they became tough to stop closing out the Ragin' Cajuns 73-43 in the Preseason WNIT.

Colorado (3-0) went almost six minutes without hitting a basket, starting the day 0-for-12 from the field. CU's defense helped keep the game close, keeping Louisiana to just five points in the stretch. Freshman Brianna McLeod finally solved the problem at the rim at the 4:01 mark and the Buffs got rolling on a 21-0 run and never looked back.

"It definitely wasn't the start we wanted," head coach JR Payne commented. "I thought we got good looks, we just weren't hitting them. It was a really great run after that. I don't think anybody panicked. We all kept our cool and did what we needed to do."

Senior Quay Miller led the Buffs with 17 points and eight rebounds, marking her third straight double-figure scoring effort to start the season. Junior Frida Formann finished with 11 points, hitting three 3s in the second quarter. Junior Tameiya Sadler and freshman Jada Wynn both came off the bench, adding eight and 10 points apiece.

"It's exciting seeing everyone out there just playing," Sadler said of the team's early season scoring options. "It just makes me think about what we can do as a team as the season progresses."

The Buffs closed the day 11-for-28 from 3-point distance, besting their 10 3's last time out against Jackson State. It's the first time a CU team hit 10 or more 3's in back-to-back games since Nov. 14 and Nov. 18, 2018, against Colorado State (10) and North Carolina (11).

Sophomore Kindyll Wetta handed out eight of CU's 20 assists, as the Buffs have now had assist totals of 19, 19 and 20 to start the season.

Louisiana (1-2) coughed the ball up 19 times on Tuesday, leading directly to 19 Colorado points.

"Even if we are better offensively than we've been, we're always going to feed off our defense," Payne continued. "We still have kids that love to defend and get pretty excited and hyped about that."
...

Turning Point
Vonleh's hook shot early in the 21-0 run gave CU' its first lead at 6-5 and the Buffs never looked back. Colorado shot 8-for-12 in the run. Colorado would go 14-for-19 after its 0-for-10 start.

Notes
The win was No. 198 in Coach Payne's head coaching career…It was marked win No. 97 for Payne at CU…CU's21-0 run lasted 10:53…CU last had three consecutive wins of 20+ last season (4) against Dixie State (+25), Southern Utah (+34), SMU (+23) and San Francisco (+24)…It's the first time CU has started the season with three consecutive 20-point wins since the 200-01 season (Albany, +50; Howard, +51; Butler, +29)…The Buffs have trailed in all three wins to start the season.

Jackson State beat Texas Tech last night. Do we face an angry Tech team?

CU was by far the better team yesterday. Everyone played. I like having a deep bench.

Quay is playing her heart out.

Yes, I shelled out the 9.99 got the subscription for a month.

People on FB complaining it was free and Buffs should have had a free livestream. Buffs don't get to control what happens when they are away. Only at home.

Do you have a feel for this team's season prospects yet, or do you need to see a few more games?

I'm starting to raise my expectations, but don't know if I'm being overly optimistic to think a return to the Dance is within their capabilities this season.

My expectations keep going up. If the team is able to escape the injury bug, the future is bright.

I can see the NCAA in their future.

Creighton surprised everyone with what they did last season. After beating us, they beat Iowa. I think they didn't lose until the Elite Eight.

I am interested to see how we do against Tennessee at Rocky Top. Tennessee isn't like the teams Pat Summit put together but playing at that arena is tough.

We are starting to get better players and so far, several players are shooting and making 3's.

Carol Callan, who I greatly respect, says Quay is a better all around player than Mya Hollingshed was.

Carol Callan, who I greatly respect, says Quay is a better all around player than Mya Hollingshed was.
I totally agree! She has more tricks in her offensive bag. Looks like she could be first team all conference this season.

I'm still not sure whether or not this team will make the NCAA tourney this season. Two big pieces are Vonleh, who looks good down low so far, and three point shooting. With Vonleh a threat to post up and score it frees up Miller to be very creative offensively. Three point shooting so far has been good with the team hitting .415 on 65 total attempts. The completing has been poor so far, so we'll see what happens in conference play.

For the most part the non-conference schedule is once again weak, with the exception of Tenn and perhaps Boise State?, both on the road.

TT lost to JSU last night, on their home court.

Both offenses have been purring, but the Buff D was able to earn a few turnovers within 2 or so minutes, and CU has a 27-20 lead after the 1st quarter.

The Buffs shot 73% for the quarter, offset somewhat by Tech going to the line A LOT (12-14). (Hope the officials don't determine this one; they'd already put Tech into the bonus before the halfway point of the quarter and 2 important Buff subs (Sadler and Wynn) already have 2 fouls.)
