(I plan on continuing to use and update this thread as, hopefully, the Buffs continue to advance.)

In an eerily similar situation to last year/ season, the Buffs (20-7, 9-7 in Pac 12 play) open up as the same seed (#5) against the same opponent, the Washington Huskies (7-15, 2-12). Hopefully this year's results will be better than last year's, when the Buffs lost by 14 to the lower seeded Huskies. Hopefully having 2 of last season's Husky mainstays (Quay Miller and Tameiya Sadler) now on the Buffs' roster, along with a generally more experienced team and a healthy Jalen Sherrod, will help avoid the upset this season.

As of now, with a #29 NET, the good news is I'd assume the Buffs are pretty much guaranteed (???) an NCAA berth with their current #29 NET ranking no matter what happens Wednesday, helped I assume by the Huskies decent NET ranking (#96, so I assume it wouldn't be considered a "horrible" loss if the team lost to them). Conversely, of course, once any team qualifies for the tourney, the emphasis/ motivation/ hunger immediately turns to getting as good a seed as possible to help advance past the 1st round. Per the below, Brian Howell with Buffzone says ESPN's current bracketology has the Buffs as an 8 or 9 seed, so assume they'd have to win at MINIMUM a couple games in the Pac 12 tourney to have hope of earning a #7 or higher seed.

The winner of tomorrow's game will face #4 seed Arizona Wildcats on Thursday (also a 1:00 PM MT start). The Wildcats are, as I type this, #17 in the NET rankings, and were the 2021 NCAA Championships runners-up (losing to Stanford in the Championship game).

I'm guessing that, if it's the usual setup, all tourney games (until maybe the final) will be on the Pac 12 Networks. (More details, and links, near the bottom of this post.)

Go Buffs!!!

LAS VEGAS – Three Colorado women's basketball players picked up four Pac-12 postseason honors to kick off Pac-12 Tournament week on Tuesday.

Quay Miller was voted the conference's Sixth Player of the Year by the league coaches, while Mya Hollingshed earned her second consecutive All-Pac-12 honor and Kindyll Wetta was named to the All-Defensive and All-Freshman teams.

"It means a lot for anyone to be recognized with any type of All-Conference award in the Pac-12," head coach JR Payne noted. "It's a big deal in the Pac-12 because the conference is so strong and the talent is so deep. I think it's a really big deal for any recognition. To have multiple people recognized is even better. It speaks to the amount of hard work that every player has poured in [this year]."

Buffs Open Pac-12 Tournament Against Washington

The fifth-seeded Buffaloes will match up with 12th seeded Washington in the first game of the Pac-12 Tournament on Wednesday.

Colorado (20-7, 9-7 Pac-12) secured its first 20-win season since the 2012-13 season with its 60-45 win over Oregon State to close out the regular season. The fifth seed for the Buffs is the second-highest seed CU has held in the Pac-12 Tournament.

The Buffs hopes their luck in Vegas turns around. CU is 0-3 in the tournament since it moved to Sin City. Colorado's last Pac-12 Tournament win came in the last tournament that was held in Seattle in 2018.

The game is a rematch of sorts from last season's tournament, where the Huskies, led by current CU players Miller and Tameiya Sadler upset the Buffs in the first round.

Both teams have different looks to them this season, but the loss to UW in Las Vegas last year has been the burning inspiration for the Buffs' entire 2021-22 season.

"This year's team is a really different team as far as the number of seniors and veterans [we have]," Payne explained. "What we went through last year, without even talking about it [this season] has had an impact on everything we've done this year. Last year's loss weighed so heavy on everyone and the impact of that loss was felt so strongly by everyone that it's impacted our entire season – in a good way. It's kept us focused. It's kept us together knowing that the smallest amount of slippage can end up costing you. I think as a group, we're just focused on doing our job. We talked about this being a business trip. It's a fun business trip but we have a job to do. We're really dialed into that."

The Buffs held Washington to an opponent season-low of 43 points in the lone meeting between the two schools in Boulder earlier this season. The Huskies made just 15 baskets the entire afternoon and turned the ball over 21 times in the 23-point decision. Hollingshed had her way offensively, posting 20 points and converting four shots from behind the arc. Miller enjoyed her day against her former team, totaling 18 points on 7-for-11 shooting.

Washington (7-15, 2-12 Pac-12) has improved as the season has gone on. The Huskies have won two of their last three and took No. 2 Stanford to the wire in the regular-season finale. Nancy Mulkey was Washington's lone Pac-12 All-Conference selection, earning honorable mention with 10.5 points, 6.0 rebounds and 3.0 blocks per game.

"I think anytime you have a new coaching staff and new players, you continue to get better and better as the season goes on," Payne explained. "I think they're in a really good rhythm. They're shooting the ball really well right now."

Tammy Blackburn and Ann Schatz will call the game on the Pac-12 Network at 1 p.m. MT. Cory Lopez and CU Hall of Famer Shelley Sheetz will be on the Colorado Radio Network and 630 KHOW locally, starting with pregame coverage at 12:30 p.m.

Cu Boulder Go Buffs GIF by CU Boulder Alumni Association

Toughest part of games like this is that Washington, at 7-15, is going to play with desperation energy since their season is over when they lose. For seniors, it will be their final game of organized basketball in their lives. It can take a while to break them. Can't let them hang in too long.

17-10 Buffs with 5:18 left in the half. Defense has been outstanding again. Now need to hit some shots and get to the locker room up double digits.

Not much of anything going on offensively- it's 21-17 Buffs at the half.
That quarter of basketball did nothing except move the game forward by 10 minutes. I don't think either team took much from that. Better come out ready to play in Q3. We look out of sync.

Foul calls have gotten a bit lopsided this quarter. 1 against UW. So many against CU that UW's in the bonus with 3+ minutes left in Q3.

40-39 after 3. Gave up 22 points that quarter and the final minutes were a 3pt barrage. Would have gotten ugly buy Mya put the team on her back, hitting 3 straight from deep while UW was on fire.

Seniors led the way.

Peanut played maybe the best game of her CU career today. She wasn't going to let us lose.

16 points (on 67% shooting), 7 rebounds, 3 assists, 1 steal and 2 blocks. Clutch.

Mya also had a game 15/12/4 with a block while having to deal with guarding 6'9" Mulkey (held her to 3/7 from the field & 7 boards).

Saw something on twitter about an injury - who and how bad did it look?
Stretcher. Looked like she kind of froze and then got pushed over by a CU player. Didn't appear to be head or neck. Didn't appear to be her legs. I hate to speculate on an injury, but she was just kind of laying on her back in pain like you see when someone's lower back locks up on them.

Edit: forgot to identify the player. It was Sadler. She'd had a very efficient game, too, and hit a big shot.

I hate seeing players get injured. I hate it even more when they are carried off on a stretcher. I am glad her dad came out of the stands to meet the stretcher at the tunnel.

Tam was talking and moving her arms. Beyond that, I am not a doctor.

Beyond her height, I don't think Mulkey is a great player. She is slow and her foot work is not good. She should be able to dominate inside and she doesn't. She mostly shoots from inside. She gets rebounds because she is so tall, not because of positioning, etc. Her height got her a college degree and contacts to get a good job.

More power to her.

Now we get to play Arizona on this business trip. Happy it's an afternoon game. I really don't like 8:30 PM games on the west coast as that is 10:30 PM my time.

Coaching staff has to do a quick turnaround, which is always true in conference tournaments.

Peanut was fantastic. Mya was Mya, and I fail to appreciate that as much as I should.
