BOULDER — When Colorado's Sabrina Iqbal walked off the final green at Stage II of the LPGA's Qualifying Series last fall, she faced a decision that might cause most some sleepless nights.
Iqbal had qualified for the Q-Series final stage in December, but to continue on, she would have to turn professional. Fortunately for Iqbal, and Colorado, that decision had actually been made months earlier.
Focused on making the most of a final season of college golf from the beginning, Iqbal put together a memorable collegiate and amateur fall season. Now she, and her Buffaloes teammates, turn their attention to the Spring portion of the 2023-24 season which tees off Monday at the San Diego State Classic.
The 54-hole event will take place at The Farms Golf Club in Rancho Santa Fe, Calif. Twelve teams make up the field, including No. 6 South Carolina, No. 7 Oregon, No. 23 Virginia and No. 30 Georgia. The tournament will consist of 36 holes on Monday, beginning with a shotgun start at 9 a.m. MT. Tuesday's final 18-hole round will also begin at 9 a.m.
Iqbal advanced past the first of Q-School in August, tying for 33rd with a 72-hole score of 5-under-par, 283, in Rancho Mirage, Calif. She fared even better at Stage II in Plantation, Fla., in October finishing tied for eighth overall at 7-under, 281, where the top 40 and ties of that event qualified for the final Q-Series.

The San Diego State Classic is the first of five Spring Season Tournaments for the Buffaloes before the final Pac-12 Championship in April. Included in that regular season slate is the annual Chevron Silverado Showdown co-hosted by Colorado, April 8-10, in Napa, Calif.
Colorado has taken advantage of some 60-degree days in the past couple of weeks to play outdoors while still getting some good practice in at the Colorado National facility.
"We have a few players dealing with nagging injuries, but hoping we can keep everyone healthy and ready to play this spring," Colorado head coach Anne Kelly said. "The next month is busy for our team, with three tournaments in the next four weeks. It will be nice to get the team back on the road and in competition mode once again."
Colorado will look for its 1-2 punch of Iqbal and sophomore Morgan Miller to continue the momentum from their record setting fall seasons. Miller and Iqbal put together the best two fall seasons in team history. Miller set school records for fall season stroke average (70.40) and score in relation to par average (-1.40) while Iqbal was right behind with the second-best marks in both categories (70.93, -1.08).
Joining Miller and Iqbal for the San Diego Classic will be senior Hailey Schalk, junior Maria Eidhagen Harrouch and freshman Carolyn Fuller. Junior Lauren Waxer Gooding will also be competing as an individual.
"We are looking forward to kicking off the spring season in San Diego," Colorado head coach Anne Kelly said. "The Farms Golf Club is a challenging test of golf and is usually in great shape. The team has been working hard in practice and workouts since the beginning of the semester and I know they are excited to get going."

There was no preview article, but the team is roughing it out in Hawaii the next 3 days, and had a solid starting round today.

With 1 round left, the Buffs are back in 11th (out of 13 teams, but are only 7 strokes out of 5th so have a chance to move up with good play in today's final round -

After being off from formal team competition for more than 3 weeks (although I'm sure practicing HARD), the team is back in action today against a TOUGH field (including 8 other Pac 12 teams) in a 3 day tourney hosted by ASU and being held in Phoenix.

Today is the scheduled start to the team's next tournament, and it's a 3 day one they co-host each year (with Oregon) in Napa. With 8 Pac 12 teams among the 16 competing, looks like it should be a great field for the Buffs. (The 1st Buff is scheduled to tee off at 10:54 AM MT.)

Overall, the Napa tournament was a ROUGH one, with the Buffs finishing last out of 16 schools and 23 shots behind 15th place USF. They did end up solidly, with their final round more in line with what other other teams put up. (Their final round 295 tied or beat 6 other schools, including tieing co-medalist USC,for the day while also much close (11 shots) behind the low round of the day.)
Now it's on to the last Pac 12's (in Pullman) in ~10 days.

PULLMAN, Wash. — Colorado finished 11th at the 2024 Pac-12 Women's Golf Championship following a final round of 7-over 295 at the Palouse Ridge Golf Club on Tuesday.
The Buffaloes closed the books on the Pac-12 era with a final 54-hole score of 25-over 889, three strokes behind host Washington State.
Top-ranked Stanford won the team title at 28-under 836, eight strokes ahead of No. 6 USC. The top four teams from the second round stayed unchanged on Tuesday and distanced themselves from the rest of the field. No. 14 Oregon finished third at 16-under 848 while No. 4 UCLA was fourth at 12 under, a full 13 strokes ahead of fifth-place Washington (+1).
Colorado was never able to make a serious move out of the 11th spot. A pair of birdies to open at the par-5 10th by seniors Hailey Schalk and Sabrina Iqbal got the Buffaloes to 2 under, but the four scoring golfers dropped seven strokes over the next four holes and played in that 5-to-10 over range the rest of the round.

"Happy for our seniors who all played solid today," said Colorado head coach Anne Kelly who is wrapping up her 27th and final season as the Buffaloes' head coach. "Unfortunately, we just couldn't get it going as a team this week. The team showed a lot of determination and fought hard. But that's the tough part about golf - you can give it everything you have and sometimes it just doesn't go your way. I'm proud of this team. They never gave up and played hard until the final putt."
