Earlier than I normally post this, but while thinking of them thought I'd start this thread for this final addition of the Pac 12 Outdoor Track and Field Championships, scheduled to begin this Friday in BEAUTIFUL Boulder at the renovated Potts Field on East Campus.
(I was curious if this was going to be the last Pac 12 Championships overall, but per https://pac-12.com/championships/2023-24 the rowing championships are next Sunday (5/19, outside Sacramento), and then the baseball tourney will formally end the Pac 12 sports era in Scottsdale beginning Tuesday, 5/21.)

I will add more info as the Championships get closer to starting.

Note-I'm not in town, but from a quick look at the forecast, looks like the wind is supposed to mostly die down well before Friday. As is VERY common this time of year, however, some chance of lightning / thunder exists in the afternoons, especially Saturday and Sunday. Hope the meet gets to completion without any weather delays! Looks like it's also going to be cooler than it could be - assume the distance runners will like that while the sprinters, not so much.

The Pac 12 has seemed to be continually improving its live video coverage for these Championships, at least in prior years, with most if not all finals getting dedicated coverage via streaming, or begin part of main telecasts on the Pac 12 Network (last year on Saturday and Sunday). Hope that continues, even if they're not in their more common (at least recently) Eugene, OR location.

Go Buffs!!!

Colorado Looks to Make Impact Felt at Pac-12 Championships

Buffs to host conference championship for first time since 2008

By: Colin Wagner, CU Athletic Communications Associate

BOULDER –
The wait is finally over for the Buffaloes. The Pac-12 Track and Field Championships start on Friday and the Colorado men's and women's track and field teams couldn't be more ready to get in on the action at their very own Potts Field.

The last time Potts Field hosted a conference championship was 16 years ago in 2008 when the Buffs were still in the Big 12. It was a special year for Colorado as its men's team took the Big 12 title over other top programs including Texas A&M, Texas and Nebraska.

The women's team didn't have the same success as the men at the Big 12 Championships in 2008, however, they are looking to change that, being in a different conference and competing at a newly renovated facility this weekend.

The Buffs have never won a Pac-12 outdoor track and field team title, but they have a unique opportunity to do so at home, starting in Boulder on Friday. Events will begin at 11 a.m. MT on Friday as preliminary races will take up day one along with heptathlon and decathlon events.

Action will continue at 11:30 a.m. on Saturday with the final events starting at 6 p.m. Final races and field events will take place on Sunday to close out the final day of competition. The first field event is scheduled to begin at 11 a.m. while the first finals race is set for 1 p.m.

Colorado has 28 men and 22 women ready for the championships for a grand total of 50 competitors. The Buffs expect to see solid results in the 3000-meter steeplechase and 5000-meter races on the men's side, led by Austin Vancil and Kole Mathison.

For the women, big names to look out for include Avery McMullen and Abbey Glynn. They have been a force to be reckoned with all season and they don't plan on slowing down anytime soon.

The three-day Pac-12 Championships will be Colorado's first meet of the postseason and second home meet this outdoor season. At CU's last home meet, the Colorado Invitational, the Buffs saw several great performances and they'll look to match that same success this weekend at Potts Field.

The current USTFCCCA outdoor track and field rankings have the Buffs men's team ranked fifth out of 10 teams and the Buffs women ranked eighth out of 12.

Less than 1 hour before the Campionships are scheduled to begin! (It says "tune in", but from what I could find, the only video coverage scheduled for today is the men's javelin and the women's and men's 10,000 meter runs on the Pac 12 Network. Maybe I'm missing where other events are being streamed somewhere?)

Hertenstein Highlights First Day of Conference Championships

By: Colin Wagner, CU Athletic Communications Associate

BOULDER –
At the final Pac-12 Track and Field Championships, the University of Colorado men's and women's track and field teams soaked in a successful day of marks here at Potts Field on Friday.

After a rainy and cloudy start to the meet, the weather cleared up slowly but surely throughout the day to make for a great atmosphere at the newly renovated facility. The stands filled in and the crowd raged on as thousands of fans from all over the conference traveled to Boulder for the championships.

"It turned out to be a great day," head coach Mark Wetmore said. "We managed to get through the weather and it was nothing different than any other typical problems. So yeah, so far so good."

The Buffaloes had several great performances trickling in on both the field and on the track. Avery McMullen started off hot for the Buffs, finishing first in the 100-meter hurdles and 200-meter. She also placed second in the high jump to put her in second among all heptathletes competing.

Jada Green picked up right where McMullen left off by finishing second in the women's javelin. She qualified for the finals along with eight other competitors after throwing for a distance of 48.55m on her third attempt. However, Green saved her best toss for last, throwing for a monster mark of 51.65m and jumping up to second place.

Later on, Colorado started to find its groove on the track with multiple qualifiers and a Pac-12 Champion wearing the Black and Gold. In the second to last event of the day, Bailey Hertenstein became the Pac-12 Champ in the women's 10,000 after finishing in dominating fashion to take the title by a margin of 25 seconds. Hertenstein had never competed in the 10,000 at the collegiate level until this evening.

"She wasn't thrilled about doing it," Wetmore joked. "We had to sit the whole team down and say 'this is the conference. This is what we talked about all year and it's money time,' and she bit the bullet and then was brilliant. So I hope she enjoyed it."

Samree Dishon also reached the podium, finishing the race in 34:46.05 for second place. Abbey Nechanicky and Katie Doucette were the other Buffs scorers, combining for seven points.

The 10,000 allowed the Buffs to take the lead in the women's standings after the first day of competition. They sit in first with 37 points followed by UCLA with 27 and Arizona with 20.

The Colorado men are in sixth place after day one, however, there were some solid performances for them on the track. All three Buffs in the men's 1500-meter qualified for the finals and will race again on Sunday. Garrett Nelson and Colton Romig also qualified for the finals in the 400-meter hurdles.

The Pac-12 Championships continue on Saturday at 11:30 a.m. and are scheduled to run till shortly after 6 p.m.

Avery McMullen Breaks Records, Claims Pac-12 Heptathlon Title

McMullen breaks Colorado's 41-year Heptathlon record

By: Herman Shelton, Associate Director/Athletic Communications

BOULDER
Avery McMullen of Colorado rewrote another record at CU, dominating the heptathlon and setting a new facility record for a first-place finish at the 2024 Pac-12 Track and Field Championships at Potts Field on Saturday.

McMullen started the day in second place after a sixth-place finish in the shot put on Friday. However, she quickly surged ahead by winning the 200-meter (23.94) and long jump (6.35m), regaining control of first place. Despite a fourth-place finish (37.88m) in another event, McMullen maintained a 76-point lead going into the final event. Although slow to start in the 800-meter run, she rallied in the last 300 meters to secure Colorado's first heptathlon conference title with a CU record of 5,913 points, surpassing Annette Tannander's record set in 1983.

"Today was incredible! Avery winning a Pac-12 Championship at home in the heptathlon. First time in school history in the Pac-12. To do it in front of her parents and family was just a phenomenal day for her and a phenomenal effort," said multi-event coach Lindsey Malone.

Eva Bruce earned a point with an eighth-place finish, recording a personal best of 4,915 points. Bruce achieved personal bests in the 200m (24.99) and javelin (22.89) and also jumped a season-best 5.81m in the long jump.

"Eva (Bruce) also had a bunch of PRs. She did a tremendous job; she scored in the heptathlon," said coach Malone, adding, "We scored 11 points (in the heptathlon), which is really a big deal."

Coach Malone's group continued to accumulate points, earning five more when Allie Routledge cleared a personal best 1.79m for a fourth-place finish in the high jump.

In the men's decathlon, Troy Colleran (5976 points) and John Swabik (5542 points) contributed three points for the Buffs with seventh and eighth place finishes.

In the men's 800 meters, Reese Kilbarger-Stumpff (1:50.13) achieved a personal best, and Ben Greene (1:51.08) and Drew Costelow (1:51.68) finished 10th, 11th, and 14th respectively.

In the men's 3,000 steeplechase, freshman standout Kole Mathison led the race from the beginning but was overtaken by the experienced Washington squad in the final laps. Mathison ultimately secured third place (9:06.55) with a blazing final 100m, ahead of teammate Charles Welch (9:07.16) who finished fourth. Conner Wingfield placed sixth (9:23.29), earning the Buffs 12 points in the event.

In the men's hammer throw, Matt Ward scored two points with a seventh-place finish, tossing 67.64m.

Colorado's women's team sits third in the standings with 53 points, Oregon leads the pack with 61 points. The men's is tied for fourth place with 26 points, while Washington is leading the group with 82 points.

The Buffs will conclude the 2024 Pac-12 Track and Field Championships on Sunday. The events will include the women's discus featuring Amanda Opp and Obi Osafa-Mensahat at 11 a.m. Noah Bouchard, Troy Colleran, and John Swabik will represent CU in the high jump. To close out the field events for Colorado, Matt Ward and Laurence Atkinson will compete in the men's discus. The running events will commence at 1 p.m. with the women's 4x100 relay and conclude with the men's 4x400 relay, marking the end of the Pac-12 era for Colorado.

Action on the field has already begun, while the scheduled start for track racing is less than an hour away. (Hope the weather doesn't screw things up, although it sounds like it might.)

Big congrats to Mr. Appleton for the BIG conference honor bestowed on him for work done both with the team AND in the classroom!

Appleton Named Pac-12 Student-Athlete of the Year

By: Herman Shelton, Associate Director/Athletic Communications

BOULDER –
Colorado's Hunter Appleton and Oregon State's Anneke Moersdorf were named the 2024 Pac-12 Men's and Women's Track & Field Scholar-Athletes of the Year, the Conference office announced during the Pac-12 Track & Field Championships in Boulder. The awards, which are presented in each of the 24 sports sponsored by the Pac-12, were established to honor collegiate student-athletes who are standouts both academically and in their sports discipline.

It's the first-career Scholar-Athlete of the Year award for Appleton and third for Colorado's track & field program; the graduate student from New Orleans joins Kaitlyn Benner (2019) and Ben Saarel (2018) as previous Buffs to earn the honor. Appleton has toed the line in six meets for the Buffs across the 2024 outdoor and indoor seasons, including a lifetime-best performance in the mile (4:14.54) at the Colorado Invitational back in February. He most recently competed in the 5000m at the Bryan Clay Invite in April, finishing 18th overall with a time of 14:09.49. Appleton scored for the Buffs with a seventh-place finish in the 5k at the 2023 Pac-12 Track && Field Championships.

Appleton is completing his master's in Organizational Leadership at Colorado and boasts a 3.93 GPA in his graduate program. He also maintained a 3.96 undergraduate GPA while at CU.

"Hunter has been a loyal, extremely hard-working, reliable member of our team," head coach Mark Wetmore said of Appleton. "I believe he's been a scorer for us in the Pac-12 outdoor meet. He's been a contributor to our cross country teams for two or three years at the Pac-12 level and at the national level. And all the while, I believe he's a 4.0 or nearly 4.0 student in a hard science major. He's gonna be a winner. He's gonna be a successful man, a great family man and a great former Buff."

In order to be eligible for the Pac-12 Scholar-Athlete of the Year award, student-athletes must be a senior (in athletics eligibility), on track to receive a degree, have a cumulative grade-point average of 3.0 or higher, participate in at least 50 percent of the scheduled contests in the sport and have a minimum one year in residence at the institution. Each Pac-12 institution may nominate one individual per sport, and the winners are selected by a committee of Pac-12 staff members at the conclusion of each sport's regular season. The athletics accomplishments of the nominees are a consideration in voting for the award.

A Scholar-Athlete of the Year is named in each of the Pac-12's 24 sponsored sports: baseball, men's basketball, women's basketball, beach volleyball, men's cross country, women's cross country, football, men's golf, women's golf, women's gymnastics, women's lacrosse, men's rowing, women's rowing, men's soccer, women's soccer, softball, men's swimming & diving, women's swimming & diving, men's tennis, women's tennis, men's track & field, women's track & field, women's volleyball, and wrestling. The award was first established during the 2008-09 academic year.

Looks like, at least to start with, the weather isn't delaying the track portion of today's final day of action -

It ends up a SOLID final Pac 12 Championships for the Buffs, as the women finish up in 4th with 80 points and the men in a tie for 6th with 66 points. (Overall, the Washington men and Oregon women end up as team champions in this final Pac 12 T & F Championships.)

Pac-12 Championships Come to an End in Boulder

By: Colin Wagner, CU Athletic Communications Associate

BOULDER –
The last ever Pac-12 Track and Field Championships came to a conclusion here at Potts Field on Sunday, wrapping up a historic weekend in Boulder. The Colorado men tied for sixth out of 10 teams while the women's squad placed fourth out of 12.

"Both teams ended up a little higher than I expected," head coach Mark Wetmore said. "Coming into this day, the men weren't doing great. They had a very good third day, a big handful of points in the 5k from the same guys that were not totally brilliant in the 10k two nights ago, so I'm proud of how they rose up. Across the board both teams rose up on the third day. Fourth and sixth is beyond my aspirations, but I'm happy."

The Washington Huskies took the men's title after beating out USC by a total of nine points as the Oregon Ducks won the women's title for a third consecutive year.

On the final day of competition, the pole vault and high jump events were moved to the Indoor Practice Facility (IPF) due to weather conditions. Despite some action being moved inside, the hammer throw, triple jump and all running events remained outdoors.

The final races electrified the growing crowd to make for a great atmosphere as the weather cleared up. It was a great conclusion to a meet that saw over 20 facility records broken.

The Buffaloes had multiple Pac-12 champions and several podium finishers throughout the weekend and it all started with Bailey Hertenstein. She became the Pac-12 champion in the 10,000-meters and 5,000-meters to help the women's team score drastically. Hertenstein's 10,000 time broke the Potts Field record that was set in 2015 while her 5,000 time broke the Potts Field record set back in 1992.

Abbey Glynn added eight points for Colorado with a second place finish in the 400-meter hurdles. There was some controversy that took place after the race was over when Oregon's Jasmine Jones was disqualified for hooking the seventh hurdle. The disqualification was later reversed as Jones' time of 53.87 stood as the best 400m hurdles time in the world this year.

Glynn still managed second place and now has the seventh best mark in the NCAA this year with a time of 55.31. She broke the school record in the event which she already previously held.

Shortly after on the track, Austin Vancil picked up a third place finish to make his second trip to the podium this weekend. He earned bronze in the 5,000 with a time of 14:18.32. Vancil was Colorado's highest scorer in the Pac-12 Championships.

Another Buff that had a great performance this weekend was Avery McMullen. She continued her amazing season by setting a new school record in the women's heptathlon and winning the Pac-12 title in the event. McMullen placed first in three events and second in another to propel her up to a whopping 5913 points. The next best score was 172 points behind McMullen.

"Yeah, I was super excited," said McMullen on Sunday. "I was looking forward to this meet because it's my fifth year, my last Pac-12 meet ever and I just wanted to come out here and do the best I could."

Other notable Colorado athletes that made it to the podium over the weekend were Samree Dishon, Jada Green and Kole Mathison. The relay of Joy Moorer, Emma Pollak, McMullen and Glynn just missed out on the top-three in the women's 4x400-meter race, however they ended the meet by breaking the school record in the event.

Next up for the Buffs are the NCAA West Preliminaries which will take place in Fayetteville, Arkansas on May 22-25.
