A Different Perspective

This probably doesn’t deserve a thread but thought some might find it interesting. I listened to the game on UCLA radio, my iHeart app wasn’t working and I only had access to Tune-in radio on my phone. Of course they were gushing about Rosen the whole game - seemed perplexed and made a lot of excuses for failed pass plays. But they frequently credited the CU secondary with excellent play. Mixed on Montez, called a few of his throws terrible, but also pointed out some excellent “outstanding” throws. At one point where Fields caught a pass just out of bounds, they said “I bet Fields wishes he had Rosen throwing him that pass” (Fields of course was local LA but left for Colorado). Were thoroughly impressed by Lindsay - seemed the only Buff they remembered from prior years. Were apoplectic about the fake field goal, perhaps more so than many Buff fans (“what was macintyre thinking?” Etc).

They were also outraged about a non-call on the Buffs just prior to the questionable call on the last UCLA drive, and saw the questionable call as a ‘makeup’ correction.

Anyway it was interesting getting a different perspective. In some cases a more balanced view of the Buffs strengths and weaknesses than we tend to get talking among ourselves. Of course the pro-UCLA bias was challenging to tolerate.

To add to the local opinion, the guys sitting next to me at the game seemed to be more impressed with Montez than Rosen. Especially toward the end when he escaped two or three tackles in a row but had to to throw it out of bounds. They were amazed that he wasn’t going down.

One other thing, they commented on several impressive plays by Gamboa. I obviously didn’t see the game but haven’t heard any of that on this Forum. Last week Gamboa was described here as hopelessly slow.

I think watching the game with those two idiot espn announcers made the game a real downer. They rarely said anything about the game other than Rosen is off, and UCLA D was really stepping up. They seemed completely ignorant about The PAC-12 in general and CU specifically, other than CU's unis had the approval of some ditzy fashion critic. At least Fox has some PAC 12 knowledge.

Iheart radio hasn't been doing the Buff games the last 2 weeks. is that a P12 thing?

looking for pregame coverage, i heard T Polombo on 760, doing an ad for the "Brain Recovery Center'. Set up to deal with concussion suffers

And they brought up, in each half, that Mac was fined $100,000 for improper reporting of the Tumpkin thing, including that Tumpkin was charged with 5 felonies.

Mac did botch the Tumpkin thing.....should have simply passed her to the Local PD. What responsibility does ANY employer have on the behavior of the employee outside of work except to report when contacted. I have been faced with that...and I gave the spouse the number to the local police....in one case, I conferenced in the police. This would have been over then.....but he tried to protect Tumpkin and keep it internal. Dumb decision. Program seems to be in a bit of a dip since this happened...

Gamboa was exploited by the TE and the other receivers on routes in the middle of the field. He covers only where he stands and has so little lateral explosion. I love the guy and he will become a good coach someday, but he is not the type of player that will help us take the next step in the Rise. He was and is a part of the success we have had thus far, but we will have to get on his shoulders to keep moving forward.

I also like Montez more than Rosen in terms of size, mobility, throws on the move, etc, but.... Rosen made about 7-8 big time NFL throws that Montez cannot yet make and those throws made the difference, despite pretty good coverage. If the two TD's were caught, then it is very likely that Montez would have outplayed him.

The Announcers sucked eggs and it felt like they were told to say something about the Tumpkin deal, but never got the full story out. Was not necessary to talk about it.

Lindsay has the best and most memorable hair in college football, and is a pretty solid player that has made a lot of plays.

Good to have more positive comments from the fellow PAC 12 members, instead of 3 hours of apathy. I still do not feel like we are totally embraced in the league and the founding members are more hesitant to give us any credit or to pay attention to us yet. Gotta win and earn the respect.

UCLA destroyed CU in the middle of the field and especially with their TE's. It was almost automatic every time a 3rd down came.

Thought this was an interesting comment on a UCLA fourum.

"1. Montez (the CU QB) is an effing stud. Sometimes you have to credit the other team or coaches, and the Colorado staff just stole that guy from the state of Texas. It looks like he had no offers from major Texas schools, but he would be the best QB by a mile at A&M and probably at UT. It's not just his legs. He has a huge arm too, and pretty good touch and accuracy. I don't think he reads defenses as well as, or has the timing of, a guy like Josh. But he's a beast. Hats off to that dude. He single handedly made the game close."

They are right. Montez is getting better every game. And he was ridiculous in the UCLA game. That throw dropped in the end zone he threw on the run was one of the best throws I’ve ever seen.

Those receivers need to learn to always be ready. When those plays break down and the scramble drill is on especially. That ball hit Winfree and the 2nd Bobo right in the hands. They looked surprised.

Has anyone seen the All 22 Film? Would like to see all of Shay's plays to see if he was ever open? For him to only catch 1 ball is amazing. Also, not that thrilled that Jay Mac was back and Winfree had to sit down! I agree with the guys that say put Nixon, Shenault, and Winfree on the field together. Nixon and Winfree on the wide side, and Shenault on the short side. Would stretch the defenses far more than what is happening now.

I know many people seem to be down on Jay Mac. Sure, maybe he doesn't have the athleticism and explosiveness of a lot of the other receivers, but it seems in clutch situations he gets himself open, past the sticks, and catches the ball. think of him as a miniature tight end.
