A flaw in strategy

Welcome to the off-season Buff fans. In the midst of a coaching controversy, I want to draw some attention to a problem with strategy that I believe is even more important.

The Buffs simply can not play the same game as USC, Oregon or Washington and expect to compete year after year.

We have to be unique.

I am SICK of watching our team try to out-cute the other teams. Our mascot is a ****ING BUFFALO! Please for the love of god take the tutu off my Ralphie!!!

So how can we be unique? In a league filled with finesse teams, we have to zig when they zag.

We should be known for 2 things. Smash Mouth Offense and Toughness.

There is a reason why we all love Phil. He is a true Buff.

Here is my case for a program shift...

Exhibit A - Stanford. They run the ball. They play solid defense. They commit and recruit to a system that keeps them competitive every single year. And win or lose, they play tough with a chip on their shoulders. They aren't quitters. THEY ARE NOT SOFT.

Exhibit B - Recruiting scarcity
Can we agree that we will usually lose to the top school for passing QB's? So why settle for the 10th best passing QB when we could become the destination for the best Dual Threat QBs in the Western United States? Apply that same strategy to every position.

Exhibit C - Tutus
Do I need to say this again!? I refuse to continue to watch a soft team. This season was ridiculous. Get me a coach and players who will put it all on the field or sit their asses on the bench. It's that simple.

In conclusion, I'm not wrong about this.

Intention to do something is very different than actually doing it.

My point precisely. Very easy to talk about the taking off of tutus and transforming into a power running team like we used to be back in the day. A little more difficult to make that transition work. Not saying it isn't worth an effort, but just easier said than done.

They do now. But have they always? Or did they build a foundation first and then build up to where they are now?

They built a foundation a while ago, but they have been recruiting blue chips for year.

I think we are making it too hard sometimes by trying to rely on some secret formula.

Let's assume Mac was gone. We had a REAL coach like Les Miles who was given enough time to properly build the foundation and recruit at a good level. Why wouldn't this be worth it?

...also, work harder.

The only real argument to my post would have to be that you believe we can eventually beat USC and UCLA by running the same systems with less talented players. I am open to listen to anyone who believes we can pull that off.

The logical answer seems easy to me.

If we continue down this path with Mac or anyone else, we will continue to see large ups and downs. Occasionally when the planets line up we'll be competing for the Pac 12 every 4 or 6 years.

I believe that I get what Jaximus is trying to say here...we did zig while the rest of the Big 12 zagged. I miss that about CU these days since the Buffs are now just another Pac-12 school these days. I wish CU would be the anti-Arizona...#Pac12BeforeDark and play early games like the rest of the country does more often.

That is why I was hopeful that CU would hire coaches such as Rich Rod or Mullen.

Ah yes... Les Miles- the guy who brought a power running scheme and unstoppable offense to LSU.

be different...not sure when buffs last had a dominant power running game...25 years ago?

I'll take a team and staff that is flexible enough to play to its strengths.

Recruit to a scheme, sure, but I'm tired of insisting on running the same systems regardless of whether it fits the players or not.

I liked the 94 offense, I don't think we have the folks to run that though. We still used the option quite a bit in it.

Yes, but he only had 22 months to implement this plan, playing many freshman, sophomores and walkons.
Stop. Just stop. Embree was a certified disaster. Making excuses for him makes you look completely retarded.

They do now. But have they always? Or did they build a foundation first and then build up to where they are now?

In the all buffs echo chamber our guys don't need to work harder. Nope, can't build a football team out of tough guys like Lindsay. Besides, can't get tougher than an MM coached team already is.

What CU needs to do is find some great recruiters. Then our record over the past decade won't matter to hapless recruits when we get into their living rooms. We will virtually hypnotize all the talented kids into coming here instead of UCLA and USC. That is the only way!
