A quick note about offense

There are 3 ways to make an offense effective:

1. Create mismatches through scheme.

2. Out-athlete the defense.

3. Impose your will through physicality.

I'd love to see all 3 of those things out of a CU offense. If we could get 2, we'd be in pretty damn good shape. Having 1 of these things at least allows you to compete, but we don't even have that.

I don't see #2 happening any time soon, so I think the focus on the next hire has to be to make sure we get #1 and have the culture + S&C program in place to get to #3 quickly. Getting #2 is more of a long-term goal for CU as we string together some winning seasons and improve recruiting along with that.

Make a priority out of building a quality offensive line and you can then do #1 and #3. Without a functional offensive line none of the three can happen.

Is Turley the man to get the job done? His resume says he is, but I don't know him or his style.

I've had a few people tell me independently (including a player parent) that Turley's system is much, much better to take a freshman and build him up than it is to help much with a vet who has been in a different system for several years.

If that's a fair characterization, I suppose that means next year we'd be seeing the proof of Turley one way or the other.

Need to recruit more athletic players - can only do so much

Also...go-go
this.

when a traditional lower tier losing fcs program's offense can, in year one, put up huge yards and points on fbs opponents, people should take a lot more notice than they did.

Football is still a very conservative (small "c") institution, and true innovation tends to get suppressed a lot longer than anyone realizes. [And especially so when the innovation is coming from a black coach.]

The first FBS (or NFL) team that gives Marion free reign to run his offense (whether he's OC or HC) is going to absolutely shock a huge proportion of the football world.

skibum: which FCS coach/team are you talking about?

Howard under Marion.

The go-go offense is legit. It's only ever been run in fcs, and it's astonishingly effective.

Of course, the conservative (again, small "c") power structures don't "believe" that it would work at the higher levels, so no one will even give him a chance to prove them wrong.

My "we can't get a top tier hc, so what's next?" dream team for CU is Walters as HC and Marion as OC (with full offensive control). We'd lose Marion in 2-3 years when someone gives him an HC position, but it'd be transformative.

Or really any HC whose focus is on D bringing him on as the OC.

Give him the keys to the offense, and he'll make waves in a good way.

Sooner or later someone's going to; I'd really like it to be us. Hell, he's already been the HC at a school that wears black and gold and has a Buffalo for a mascot - that's close enough for the bfl crowd, right?

Like what New Hampshire did with Chip Kelly's spread.

The place that I think would be perfect for Marion's Go-Go offense is Hawaii. They had so much success with the June Jones offense and iirc Marion was once an assistant there.

Our O is so bad, even when we run plays that work you can count on a WR to drop the ball on a wide open perfect throw.

I like Walters. However, pairing him up with a very green OC sounds like a disaster. If you go Walters, you almost have to let him control the D while paying big for a proven OC. Marion is intriguing to me but not paired up with Walters

I think you're right that you can't pair a first time HC in his mid 30s with a first time P5 OC in his mid 30s for this hire at CU. Not only the inexperience, but I think there would be a weird dynamic between them with a potential power struggle at some point. Far too risky for a program that needs an "adult" in the room to build this thing back up and right the ship, but I'd be lying if I said that combination of Walters and Marion didn't spark a bit of intrigue.

Our WR group got much worse this year. What’s that say about the coaching? We had 2 NFL receiver coaches on staff.

It mostly tells me that often, NFL position coaches have forgotten how to teach fundamentals and are just a poor fit for coaching CFB. I think the same is true on offense in general.

Defense however can be more easily adapted. It seems…

It sounds great to have a WR coach who coached Zay Jones in college and then Mike Williams and Keenan Allen in the NFL, until you realize that maybe those guys are ballin in the NFL due to more than good coaching

Are you saying it might have hurt us to have run off some of our most athletic receivers?

Of course, I've also always agreed with the sentiment that receiver is a dependent position. When Shrout can't make an accurate throw, it doesn't matter if we had Megatron out there.
