Adjustment on the DL

Radio guys were talking about it and MM commented after the game.

They've been working on slanting their DLs to get more movement & disruption. But it had been a struggle because for that to work a guy has to be able to re-direct to keep his fits for gap integrity instead of being washed out of the play.

Today was the first time they were able to make it work.

Maybe this new wrinkle for the DL is going to allow the defense to turn a corner? They really seemed to be in the backfield a lot more today while not allowing holes you could drive a truck through.

I hope they've turned a corner.

My inner pessimist wonders if Cal's o-line is just exceptionally suspect to this tactic for whatever reason...

Anyone else in the conference do this as a comparison?
Pretty much everyone does it when in prevent defense and you don't have to defend the run. But it's not something I'm used to seeing in regular play when running a 3-4. Closest I can think of is the old Steelers 3-4 when they used to line up the NT at an angle and have him wash out the C in one direction or the other.

In this case, it seems like one of those high risk adjustments a coaching staff makes when it finds out it can't match up in its regular base. Seems to suit Franke very well and is probably something they'd used with him when he'd come in for passing situations. What's really different is using this as a base and short yardage technique.

In other words, if you've got lemons you've got to try to make lemonade.

it is an adjustment you make when you are where we are in terms of depth, experience, and talent. once again, i will say that i think we have the right guy at the top in terms of organization, leadership, and x's and o's... we need to up our recruiting... the injuries upfront on defense have hurt us.

we can steal one more win. we're going to get gashed by the gambling in the next 3-- each of these teams can beat us for taking risks. but, we're going to have one of those games and at least one of these teams is going down.

Franke played really well. I would almost put Tuiloma in at NT permanently, or at least until Javier gets in good enough shape where he can consistently keep his pad level low. Overall, a solid effort by the DL.

Franke seems strong and slick. gets a ton of penetration even when he plays nose tackle, but those short arms never wrap up.
