Just saw on the AD website that long time PA announcer for the Buffs, Alan Cass is going to retire.

Maybe I'm getting old, but I feel a bit sad that he is leaving. He has been the PA announcer for various CU athletic events (mens & womens basketball, wrestling, baseball, track and field football)since the mid 60's..... Hell, he announced my name when I graduated in 84  It was always comforting to me to hear his familiar voice at Folsom and the Event Center (Keg).

For some reason, I can't stand listening to Allan Roach who does the PA for the Av's, Broncos, Rockies, Super Bowl, etc.

Next to go is Zimmer.

Will miss Cass big time as well. Loved it when he did the Broncos too.

Zimmer's voice is still golden to me but he has a harder time keeping up with the action these days so I won't be completely torn up when he retires.

Huge shoes to fill.

Fiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiirst and goaaaaaaaal at the NebRASKA fiiiiive yard line.

Touchdooooooooown.....Goldennnnn Buffaloessssssss!!!!!!!

Heeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeere coooooooooooooooooooomes Raaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaalphie!!!

Not only that, I have been hoping for Johnson to step down since he started. I appreciate a homer but he is way overboard with the verbal orgasm for a 3 yard run.

It is frustrating to listen to him describe a no gain run as if it were a 10 yarder. However, I do generally like his broadcasts. No way you could sync him up with the actual action though.

It is the same thing with his pre-snap observations. A little less detail would go a long way.

No Mark Johnson type please! Have a huge round of auditions and get someone middle aged and understated like Cass. I they hire some loud NBA type I'm going to be hugely disappointed.

His only black mark is the utterly lame "IN - COM - PLETE" chant which he started at Bronco games.

I wish we could bring him back in for "heeeere cooomes ralllphie." It will never be the same. Thank you, Alan, for all those years of being the buffs' voice guy.

I appreciated this little anecdote from the B.G. Brooks article:

If Cass was immovable in his approach to PA work, masking his enthusiasm for the Buffs sometimes has been difficult. After one particular CU-Nebraska game, he received an 11 p.m. telephone call from a Huskers fan in Omaha who disapproved of his "CORN-huskers" call - the heavy emphasis being on the CORN.

Cass pointed out to the gentleman that his school's media guide offered a pair of nicknames - Cornhuskers or Bugeaters.

Asked Cass: "Which do you prefer?"

Click . . . the conversation was ended on the Omaha end, with no follow-up call.

At some point in the coming months, CU will hold tryouts to find a successor.

Here is a second suggestion. Choose someone like Cass. Someone who doesn't scream hysterically into the microphone stealing attention away from where it ought to be.
What's the old saying? If it ain't broke, don't fix it.

a-****ing-men.

CU has an old time stadium with all kinds of history and great character with folsom field. dont go down the road of some high piched, shrill voiced moron who tries gimmiks to try and rile up the crowd. CU has a long history with Mr. Cass. Although no one can ever replace him, his legacy and impact on game day at folsom and its atmosphere should not be ignored.

a carbon copy is impossible.

yet, a deep voiced, professional who lets the kids be the focal point... should be the focal point. we dont want gimmiks to be the point. rather, its for the kids on the field to determine the point.... and the job of the announcer to emphasize the point of the play that has happened or is about to happen. that is my point....

remember.... its all about the deep voice and just telling the story.....

"thiiiiiiirrrrrrd and 17 seventeeeeeeennnnn at the 15."

"tiiiiiiiiiime out! Nnnnnnnneebraska!"

Is it me or did the MSG PA announcer last night sound like Alan Cass? Can anyone confirm whether Cass made the trip? I'm going to ask Plati.
