AllBuffs Season Preview - The Utah Utes

Utah

Projected Starters

Brandon Taylor - Fearless guard who has a lot of DGAF in him.
Delon Wright - Arguably the best player in the P12 - and one of the top guards in the nation.
Jordan Loveridge - The workhorse who is the perfect compliment for Wright.
Brekkot Chapman - Skinny for a PF, but can pick & pop with the best of them to keep teams honest.
Jeremy Olsen - A solid big man who can bang with the best of them down low.

It will be interesting to see if Utah goes big or small to start the year. It wouldn't surprise me to see Taylor come off of the bench and JUCO transfer Chris Reyes sliding in to his spot and playing PF. The big question there is if Loveridge/Chapman can guard some of the 2's in the Pac-12. There's also Kyle Kuzma off the bench who could really surprise people and the Utes have the less-evil Bachynski in Dallin who can come in for Olsen when he needs a breather. I love this team. When you have the frontrunner for Pac-12 Player of the Year, you're off to a good start. The question is how will the Utes deal with expectations for the first time in a few years. If they can handle it, they can make some serious noise. It's going to all depend on if Coach K can keep them moving.

Utes ascended more quickly than any of us thought. Let's not forget just how bad this team was in '11/'12. We're talking about a team that struggled to hit 40 points (couldn't even hit that in Boulder). Even last year, while far better, they still snuck up on teams expecting to go on cruise control when the Utes visited. Now all of a sudden, the Utes have a target on their back. How they respond will be interesting. Facing amped up crowds, etc does make a difference. They'll be battle tested OOC. Also have two huge early "swing" home games against CU and UCLA back to back in early January. Those two in SLC will tell us a lot about whether the Utes can finish 2nd.

they had open tryouts from the general enrollment to have enough players to scrimmage at one point! Utah being good is something i openly root for. They've got a good history and good fans, them being good is good for the conf.

i kind of feel with all the hype it could be hard to meet expectations, but i hope they do live up to them.

Pac needs a good Utah, for sure. Only downside is it makes it awfully difficult for us in Vegas with Arizona and Utah creating a home environment. Almost like a Greensboro/ACC situation.

agreed, there were a good number of utah fans there last year. CU was probably the 2nd most represented last year with Utah very close. I only remember one Oregon fan and all he wanted to talk about was football @Buffalo brad and absinthe I'm sure remember him.

he was not sharp.

We are not talking enough about how good Delon Wright is. If he's on our squad we are a potential sweet-16/elite-8 team.

Utah and Krystkowiak getting a lot of praise lately

The road trip for the rest of the PAC to the mountain states is going to be tough this year. Could see a lot of wins for both CU and Utah in those 2nd games of trips..

Buffs pull USC, Wazzu, Stanford, and ASU on the back end of those trips this season.

Go back through the non-con opponents that the utes have had during larry k's tenure. It's clear that this year was the cornerstone of the plan and the break out year. (I think last year was for tad, but unfortunately spencer got hurt). Lets hope nothing unfortunate happens to the utes this season

They are going to be fun to watch.

Impressive but most of those stats are from beating up crap competition, but he is different than a true frosh. He is already fairly built guy. I doubt he keeps those numbers up the rest of the year, or he will probably lbe a 1st round pick.

12 rebounds (5 offensive), 7 blocks (only 4 points) against SDSU (in the game that set offense back 20 years in basketball). Chad Ford has him #19 in his latest top 100 and he's a sleeper for the top 10.

Impressive numbers against SDSU minus the points, I'm curious to see how he performs against Wichita state and Kansas. Those will be good tests. Not many 7 footers around that are skilled, so that definitely helps his draft prospects.

That would really hurt Utah to lose him along with Delon Wright.
