We trotted out five nickname candidates for a vote from a long list for this year's Nebraska-Texas game earlier today. After a day of voting, the results are in:

1. The Big Beef - 27 percent

This was my vote, but it edged out a really narrow victory. Who knows how well any of these will stick, but I really liked The Big Beef.

2. The Quarrel at Memorial - 26 percent

Another good selection here. I may use this one in passing.

3. The Sayonara Shootout - 20 percent

Sounds like this name suffered from the use of Japanese in reference to an American game and its use of the word "Shootout," which was recently removed from the Red River game. Also, neither team's offense should be outstanding.

4. The Good Riddance Game - 17 percent

Seems like Texas isn't as happy to say goodbye to Nebraska as the Huskers are to the Horns.

5. Capitol Punishment - 10 percent

A couple notes from the full results:
  • Texas preferred The Big Beef with 29 percent, versus 23 percent for the Quarrel at Memorial.
  • Nebraska preferred the Quarrel at Memorial 39 percent to 28 percent for The Big Beef.
  • The rest of the world, minus the U.S., preferred the Big Beef at 31 percent, versus 25 percent for the Quarrel at Memorial.
Here's how the rest of the Big 12 states voted:
  • Oklahoma - Quarrel at Memorial (31 percent), The Good Riddance Game (23 percent), The Sayonara Shootout (20 percent), The Big Beef (19 percent)
  • Kansas - Quarrel at Memorial (30 percent), The Big Beef (28 percent), The Good Riddance Game (20 percent)
  • Missouri - The Big Beef (40 percent), The Quarrel at Memorial (19 percent), The Good Riddance Game (17 percent), The Sayonara Shootout (14 percent)
  • Colorado - The Big Beef (34 percent), The Quarrel at Memorial (24 percent), The Sayonara Shootout (22 percent)
  • Iowa - Quarrel at Memorial (37 percent), The Big Beef (24 percent), The Sayonara Shootout and Good Riddance Game (17 percent)
