That year had some good upperclassmen players (Dizon, Polumbus, Wheatley, Hypolite, Charles, etc.), but not a lot of them. It also had a ton of freshmen who saw significant playing time. The starting QB was a RS-Freshman Cody Hawkins.

That team made a bowl game by going 2-2 in the non-conference and 4-4 in the Big 12. Probably a more difficult strength of schedule than we face this year, with Florida State and ASU on the non-conference schedule.

It all started with an overtime win against a bad CSU team.

Will the 2012 Buffs match the 2007 Buffs?

Easy. 2007 for one simple reason.

2007 - Mostly Barnett's recruits as upperclassman. They had a good mind set instilled from the beginning and were able to carry it through despite the coach.
2012 - Mostly HaLkings Recruits as upperclassman. This Class started under a soft coach. There are good players in this group but they are still trying to overcome the short falls.

In 2007, we beat CSU, Oklahoma, and Nebraska, if I remember correctly. Not a bad 6-7 season.

We did. However, that was a 3-9 CSU team and a Nebraska team that missed a bowl and got its coach fired, iirc. Oklahoma was really good that year. We were also lucky to miss UT on the schedule.

poll: did you feel worse when you were stabbed in the ear with an icepick or in the eye with a switch blade?

all kidding aside, i think the 07 team was deeper, scary as that might be. i dunno-- i hope this team surprises us.

I think we look back on '07 and remember them as better than what they were. Especially when we haven't seen what the guys do this season or know which young guys step up and make names for themselves.

In terms of what I thought we were for '07 at this time that year, coming off a worse season in '06 than we had in '11, I might actually put this year's team a little ahead.

T Wheatly was shut down corner that was a known game changer.
Jordan Dixon had an incredible nose for the ball. Defense wins games, and those two were terriffic.

Hugh Charles showed alot of senior leadership that year and earned the right to extend his career into the CFL. You can make short jokes all you want about Cody Hawkins, but that young man commanded the respect of his teammates and knew how to rally the offense.

Time will tell if there are any surprises in 2012.

I'm at a point where I'm hoping this class is better than the 2006 team.

that's pretty fair-- we do have the benefit of hindsight now -- a lot of guys stepped up that year. i actually thought maybe old juicebox had us turning the corner at the end of that year.

What a tale of two programs in that 2007 Bowl matchup. Bama went on to the National Title a few short years later.

The players you listed are why that '07 team was better.

Wheatly, Polumbus, Dizon, Rabid Goldfish.

All three were given a shot in the NFL if I'm not mistaken

If we get LB and CB play like 2007 we will be in a hell of a position for our first bowl in 5 years. And a win over a ranked team? Doubtful this year, but I'll love our chances if we pull it off.

how about the '06 O team vs the '12 O team and the '07 D vs the '12 D.

with the O in '06, think the QB position....

the '06 D is no comparison to anything. that '06 D was pretty dang good considering that the O was nonexistant and they kinda kept CU in a good number of games. think UGA and others.

Considering that the 2012 team is a giant pile of unknowns and ifs, I'm not sure how anybody could vote against the 2007 team.

The 2012 team is better than the 2006 team simply by virtue of having a QB

right. but, the D is no comparison. that is why i offered up the comparision between the O of '06 and O of '12 and the D of '07 and the D of '12.

i think that may be a bit more like what we see this year. if we could have the '06 D this year, i would venture to guess that some feelings about our chances this year would change a bit. with the '07 D.... i would say that is a bigger question.

its just a thought. i am not trying to start a **** storm here.

I guess the question is, in the spring prior to that 2007 season, did we feel better about our prospects for the upcoming season than we do now. I honestly can't recall specifics. Coming off a two-win season and with a difficult schedule (on paper) in front of us, I'm sure I would have been thinking that a bowl game was a long shot, so the season came as a pleasant surprise. I still give a slight edge to the 2007 team, by virtue of some of the players they had on the roster, but it's a close call for me.

Yeah, if we only had Jordan Dixon back we would be set.
