Alright I guess after calming down a bit on the trip back up to Tempe I can do my write up.
So we got down to Tucson at about 3:45 and walked over to 4th Ave and decided to grab a bite and a few beers at Frog and Firkin. Some of the best pizza I've had in a long time. We thought that the front gate needed a little addition while we were there though.
After that we walked through campus and headed up to McKale. Surprisingly we walked straight in with the flags and sign without even showing them to any security guards and headed to our seats. We were there pretty early and I snapped a few pics of McKale.
Most of the fans were pretty friendly before the game and got a kick out of the NIT reference. As the game went on..not so much.
Obviously throughout the game we were pretty excited but never over the top and watched our language around all the senior citizens. We decided to put the sign away once the game started because it was a little too big. In regards to the "Zona Zoo student section" - WOW it does not exist. I understand its still over break, but there were literally NO students at the game - not even one row. Apparently the university just sells their reserved student section tickets away to old people when it's break.
Now fast forward to the 2nd half and UBL thought he should maybe try to distract their free throw shooters a bit. So when it was quiet he gave a yell or two (no profanity) and a few of our friendly neighbors started to turn on us - we got scolded by the old ladies in front of us "THAT IS VERY BAD SPORTSMANSHIP! YOU ARE NOT ALLOWED TO YELL WHEN OUR TEAM IS SHOOTING AND THE CROWD IS QUIET". Then it all went to hell in a hand basket when their big guy #35 missed two free throws. The lady's old wrinkly husband turns around and reaches at our feet and grabs our sign and screams he is going to shove it up UBL's ass and tries to tear it up. But his arthritis kicked in and he decided to frisbee it down a few rows and he hit a wheelchair bound woman in the back of the head. Us along with the rest of the area were speechless as security approached and began to watch. So I asked our expert on sportsmanship what she would describe that as but no response.
The game went on and I started to see it slipping away until Sab hit the game winner. We were going nuts but I thought it might have been too late, while UBL was confident he got it off. After 5 minutes at the monitor we had both been looking on twitter and felt very confident it was going to count (the one positive of so many old people is that the 3G is great because we were the only ones using modern technology)
As the game entered OT neither of us thought the Buffs had the edge and we all know what happened from there.
After it was over we just stood there and cheered for the team as the walked off. 95% of the fans leaving the stadium were awesome and congratulated us on a hard fought game as we wished them good luck the rest of the year (The exception goes to the 300lb neo-nazi who flipped us off) . We had a few elderly women come apologize for the old guys poster toss and then two security guards came over and apologized as well. By this time we had the screenshots of Sab's game winner and showed a few of the guys around us.
Well I guess this is the start of a rivalry and I hope the team remembers this game for awhile an uses it for a little motivation. I'll try and do a post from the game on Sunday here in Tempe if there is interest. Tomorrow were blowing up a pic of Sab's game winner to bring into Wells Fargo Arena.
