ASU - which team shows up?

Do we get the CU team that toyed with Cal or the team that couldn’t generate any offense against WSU it the one that couldn’t generate any defense against UA?

Do we get the ASU team that looked like world beaters against Washington it the pedestrian lot we saw against USC?

Both teams seem pretty schitzophrenic lately.

I'd feel much better about it if the game were at Folsom, but I still expect the offense to generate some points because ASU is near the bottom statistically in run defense and points given up. Key will be our defense continuing to improve and hopefully getting Oliver back from injury. Anyone know his status for this week?

Luckily we play them later in the year this season so it isn't 100 degrees for an 8pm kickoff. Looks like it is going to be about as perfect as possible.

Definitely not very confident right now, we have only played well on both sides once this season so I am not confident we can do it again, especially on the road. We absolutely killed them when they blitzed last year but they have a little different approach this year with the new DC. PL needs to have a huge day.

I too look forward to Olivers return.

As much as Arizona made me angry when the game happened. They’ve now won 4 straight and are 6-2. The QB is a heisman candidate, he’s rushed for over 800 yards in October alone and they’re averaging like 48.3 ppg. So as much as we thought Arizona could be a push over win, that loss doesn’t look as bad now. It isn’t just our defense that couldn’t contain them. Washington state gave up FIFTY EIGHT to them lol.

If you flip two fair coins, there are 4 equally likely scenarios. Home field makes a difference in two of them.

  • Both come up heads: we get a great game between two teams playing really well - home field may prove decisive in this scenario.
  • Heads - tails: we come out firing on all cylinders and they piss down their legs.
  • Tails - heads: we step on our dicks, and they come out like world beaters.
  • Tails - tails: both teams **** the bed and start flinging poo at each other. Home field could make a difference in this closely fought poo flinging contest.
I have no idea what will happen, but I don't like our odds in 3 of 4 equally likely scenarios.

OTOH this staff has been pretty good with getting their teams to peak in November; we may have a better chance of coming out firing on all cylinders than a 50/50 coin flip.

fully expecting a poo flinging contest.

Would be nice if the team comes out with their hair on fire so they get bowl eligible, and don't have to rely on beating USC or Utah
As fans all we are really concerned with at this point is getting bowl eligible but the team should definitely be looking for 2 wins out of the last 3 to get to the expected win total of 7.

I think CU has a better shot at Utah actually. Buffs have always played them close win or lose since both schools joined the PAC 12.

Which, incidentally, is more evidence of MM teams peaking at the right time.

We lost that game in the first drive of the second half, and I knew it at the time:

"1st and 10 at COLO 39
(15:00 - 3rd) Lindsay, Philli rush for 6 yards to the COLO45 (Burns, L.), PENALTY COLO holding (Kough, Gerrad) 10 yards to the COLO29, NO PLAY."

That drive was the only one in the second half that ended in a punt. Both defenses were hot garbage that night (though I give AU's the nod for the worst since they weren't dealing with Tate's first game.) It was clear to me that each offense was going to score on every drive. had that holding call not put us at 1st and 20, I think we win the game.

If the Buffs win, I think UU is a worse team than ASU so going 2-1 is possible.

Now the Buffs have finally put a complete game together they know how to do it.

I’m hoping...almost but not quite expecting...last weeks team to show up and win.

It is obvious that the Washington State woke up the team. Much higher level of focus and cohesiveness in all three elements of the game.

Will they maintain that focus or slide back into their sleepwalking ways? With this years team I have no clue but I hope they have turned the corner.

ASU is very aggressive on defense. Will need to implement a lot of WR screens and try to stretch their defense out as much as possible. Hopefully that will wear on them as the game goes on and we can hit on some long plays and open it up.

I don't have a lot of confidence with this game being away. On defense it all starts and ends with stopping the run. Cal's run game is pretty mediocre and CU did a great job against it. If that can carry over to the ASU game, we will be in business.

Oh, by the way, Todd Graham is still the biggest douche in sports

I think this game comes down to Lindsay. If he can churn out first downs, we win.

They couldn't handle the Lindsay Irwin machine last year. We finally got that same machine revved up this year.

I was heartened by how easily SC ran on them Saturday night - we might not have the talent that SC has, but their offensive line has had serious problems since the Wazzu game and they got well against the ASU front 7.

What still concerns me is our decidedly worse play on the road vs at home, and the fact that we've never won in scum devil stadium.

There's always a first for everything and no better time than this weekend. I'm feelin' it.
