Attendance at Folsom and RG

Hearing the reports and watching the game on TV-it was clear that we had a small but boisterous crowd on Saturday. Similar to last Sunday against CSU.

One of the things RG was famous for during his time with the Rangers was packing the stadium. I don't know much about how he did that, but I am wondering what you guys think. Assuming we continue to put a competitive product on the field that has big play capability on both sides of the ball (but recognizing we are probably a few years away from regular bowl appearances), how long until Folsom is packed regularly?

I guess I am asking is how soon can we expect RG's magic touch if he has one to be realized in attendance figures?

With all the out-of-state bandwagon jumpers in CO and a continuing lousy economy, it'll take winning a few serious games before RG can work any "magic." Right now the Manning Super Bowl Express is overflowing. It also doesn't help that US 36 into Boulder contiues in its "under re-construction" mode, either. That hassle cuts down on curious low-info fans venturing up fo a game or two.

New highway, new attitude, serious wins....he can do his thing.

I wouldn't read too much into the first two games' attendance. First of all, we were terrible last year, not even competitive in most games, and that is obviously going to takes its toll on attendance. If we continue to put a competitive and exciting product on the field, that will change. But, there were two other factors is in play for the past two games. The RMS in Denver is a very unpopular game, and especially when both teams are coming off terrible seasons, no one's going to pay over-priced tickets for that. The second was an FCS opponent. Maybe some schools still sell out a game like that, but again, a team coming off a terrible season won't.

As the season progresses and we get into conference play, provided that we continue to play the way that we have the past two games - even in losses - attendance will improve.

Last Saturday, no marketing campaign was going to overcome the game theme that casual fans already had in their heads:

"Fight traffic on the under-construction 36 in 90 degree heat to watch some 1AA team I've never heard of play a Buffs squad that hasn't turned in a winning season since 2005? Don't think so."

We need the students to be there. Somehow we need to get that section full. It makes such a difference in the 4th quarter when it is close and the opposing team is driving towards the student section. RG needs to find a way to get them in the stadium. The players felt the energy saturday, and it helped them out. I am convinced the volume from the students that were there disrupted UCA's communication.

Regardless supposedly it was the worst recorded attendance in 25 years. I guess I didn't think that would happen with a new coaching staff, a new AD who gets this stuff, and an improved product on the field-regardless of who we are playing.

However, living in Chile, I had no idea about the construction project on 36. That certainly doesn't help. But I would hope that RG and HCMM can collaborate to make going to Buffs game a must-see event. And when they can't I would hope RG finds creative ways through marketing promotions, discounts, free tix to inner-city kids (and providing buses) to start filling up the stadium on a regular basis. Obviously fans paying full price is the best for dept finances.

Typically, the visitors will bring anywhere from 1,000-2,500 to the game. I think UCA brought about 200 close friends and family.

Free bong hit for every student that arrives before kickoff.

Over 21 only, of course.

Who wants to show up for a FCS opponent especially when CU has gone 1-2 against of late before the UCA game?

Student section was pretty full, stayed late and were loud & boisterous as well, it just takes a while to fill up. Its as if they seem to get it, that this team is different.

Expand and really push the C-Unit concept toencompass football games : early arrival as extra points toward post-season trips/awards, pizza parties, Sink rentals---rent the Sink out for a night for dorm/ Greek party, based on best participation and early arrival point--- etc.

For adults, bring back beer sales; we are adults after all---shove your nanny statism! If the students abuse it, make clear its expulsion-time. But then, how can you judge when the student drinkers arrive buzzed from pre-game or tailgate parties???

First of all I gotta say the students when they get there are usually loud and into the game. But it has been bothering me for years that no matter what time kick off is the students file in 30-45 late. That **** doesn't happen at schools in the SEC, Big 10 or even most Pac12 schools. Something needs to be done about it. I went to grad school at Wake Forest and they had a great policy for students at bball games (this was when they were actually good.... ya know before Buzz lol). They had a lower level student seating right on floor and a crappy section up high. Students could sign up for the lower section until it was registered as full. But the kicker was you had to sign in/scan in to the section no later than 15 minutes prior to tip.... if not the seats would be given to first come first serve students and you LOST your lower level seat for remainder of season. I know this would be harder to implement at a football game but I would love to see something like that so the assholes rolling in over an hour late have some negative to it.

How about, students can use any entrance until 20 minutes prior to the game, at which time they will be required to use the customary student gate.

I am for anything to get those stands filled earlier. It looks so pathetic on TV I can't even explain to you. I can only imagine a recruit from Tx or so cal sitting at home watching that thinking.... DAMN I play in front of this many people in high school.

They could do what they do for basketball, well at least adapt the system. For every game that they swipe their buffcard at the gate, say 15min before kickoff, they earn a point. Have point levels for prizes. 2points a towel, 3 points a T-shirt 4-points a jersey and so on. Maybe if you make it to all 6 home games before kickoff, you will be part of the travel party for bowl games in the future.

As soon as you could say that you'll take 50 to post-season games (P12-C & Bowl) and it wouldn't be heard as an empty promise on that possibility, I believe that points system would work very well.

There are a lot of good ideas that could make things incrementally better and those ideas should be implemented. But just like with attendance in general, recruiting in general, donations in general -- only winning will bring this home for CU.

Or, how about they do away with that ridiculous student entrance completely? Thus opening up an additional 10 or so regular entrance gates.

Just for a little perspective here, we're not the only school that has problems with student attendance. In case you're planning on skipping the links, ALABAMA had 30% of their student tix go unused last year, and they won the MNC. Could it be that kids these days just aren't very engaged in going to sporting events?

I'm throwing a little incentive in for the group that wants to get the buzz on until the last minute.

I know what you're doing, and I think it's a good idea. But the only reason it's a good idea is because of the existence of the moronic student only entrance.

RG is on it!

Shldr2Shldr,

Thank you for the email below. We discussed this very topic this morning and will work hard to get the students to and in the game prior to kick off. Thanks for your support!

Yes, the student entrance needs to be done away with. I made the mistake of going through it once last year and ended up standing in line for 30 minutes trying to get in. But those kids were loud and brought the ruckus. I think they got pissed as hell when the UCA players were taunting the crowd when they scored on the first play of the 4th quarter. The stadium was doing the half and half "Go! . . . . Buffs!" chant and their O line was sitting there mocking the cheerleaders.

With regards to attendance in General, I think the rise of our hoops team has shown us that CU fans are hungry for a winner and will turn out in great numbers once they sense that the team is on the right track. If they somehow pull off the win this week, then the numbers will go way up during conference play.
