Per the link:
"
Well this came out of nowhere. Mark Anderson of the Las Vegas Review-Journal is reporting that Buffaloes defensive coordinator Kent Bear is leaving to take the same role at UNLV. Anderson reports that Baer will be also coaching linebackers and that Andy LaRussa will be joining him to coach safeties and special teams. It's a curious move and a pretty clear downgrade. Unless there is some other reason out there you'd have to think that Mac advised the coach to look around this offseason. Baer came with MacIntyre from San Jose State. More to come...
"

Edit- Confirmed per UNLV website- http://www.unlvrebels.com/sports/m-footbl/spec-rel/122214aac.html

Dude must have been just about to be fired. Otherwise makes no sense to make a downward move and way less money. Now we have a multi-year contract opening up. Nice.

? to mods. I can't see a way to do it- could you add "and LaRussa" to thread title? Or, can I do it somehow?

This will be a nice test of HCMM and Rick George to see if they can make a good coordinator hire.

It makes a lot of sense. MacIntyre encouraged Baer to look for other opportunities. MacIntyre was not happy at all with the defense

Offense improved pretty much everywhere, Defense was about the same in a lot of categories. As a defensive coach, had to think HCMM would be making some changes there.

Not thrilled with the LaRussa news, but GREAT news on Baer.

Totally agree-very good news on Baer. I'll throw out a realistic name to replace Baer---Kevin Clune from Hawaii. Was very impressed with their D (they shut us out in the 2nd half IIRC), and I think you could get him without giving him a multi year deal. Wasn't thrilled with secondary play in general (see the Arizona game), so I could go either way on LaRussa leaving.

This is a huge opportunity for MacIntyre to re-invent the defensive staff.

He needs to capitalize in a big way.

It's time for fresh blood on defense. Secondary coaches are too aplenty anyway. They needed to choose the better of the two. Baer's defense did not improve much and the Buffs needed a change of scheme and something infused into it. While LaRussa has recruited the Polynesian group well, I am not seeing a huge amount of Hawaiian influx. Still the typical amount.

Our DBs did not turn their head on the pass hardly ever. That's coaching.

Our LB play was bad. That's Baer's position.

Please forgive me if I say best of luck elsewhere, bring on someone else.

+1 Not sure any other read into this one. HCMM gave Baer a chance to find a new post rather than formally fire him. Kind of surprised about Larussa though. And if those guys go, can they take Neinas with them?

No LaRussa is ST Coord at UNLV now

Yeah I really liked LaRussa, but good for him taking a chance to further his career

How does making basically a backward move to another assistant position at UNLV qualify as furthering his career? Of course, if he was about to get canned then it makes sense. Otherwise, I can't possibly see why he would have taken this job.
