Facing a 4th-and-15 at Texas Tech's 21-yard line, Baylor coach Art Briles tried to tie the game with a gutsy play call, but a reverse pass from Josh Gordon to* Robert Griffin came up short of the first down, and Texas Tech held on in the final minutes to earn its first conference win of the season, 45-38.Down 45-28 late in the third quarter, Baylor's play to even get as close as they did was impressive, but anytime the defense gives up 45 points, a win is asking a lot from the defense.
The questions about Texas Tech's offense will stay away for another week after a big day for Taylor Potts, who completed 42-of-59 passes for 457 yards and four touchdowns.
Griffin topped his career high of 380 yards last week for 384 more this week, including two passing touchdowns and two rushing touchdowns, the final one providing the final score early in the fourth quarter.
The loss has to be disappointing for the Bears, who came agonizignly close to being a win away from bowl eligiblity, but will drop to 4-2.
For Texas Tech, the win was much-needed after an 0-2 start in conference play. There's no doubt the Red Raiders brought a desperate team to Dallas, and they'll leave at 3-2 with a huge game against Oklahoma State in Lubbock looming next Saturday.
Baylor travels to Colorado next week for another game that--as a team fighting to qualify for a bowl as a member of the Big 12 South--they have to win. The schedule gets much tougher in the second half of the season, and depending on how Colorado plays tonight against Missouri in Columbia, the Bears might be favored.
