Being realistic about CU football

I've done my best to wait a day or two and try to remove all emotion to discuss the current state of the program.
As such, I'm going to post MY opinions on where we stand.

I, like others were very hyped when Prime decided to come to CU. I'ts no doubt he's turned us into a media center and has brought in millions of dollars to the university
and to Boulder. This is a good thing. I'ts good when the media follow everything you do as it helps put us on the map of recruits, tv crews, NFL scouts, etc. The downside is that evertyhing (good and bad) are blown out of proportion.

I'm not worried that we lost one game to Nebraska. We got out played, were out prepared, and outmatched. It happens.
I'm not one to say that Prime should be fired because he hasnt' turned a program around in less than two seasons.

What I do see is this:
1) Sheduer still has NO protection at all
2) Shedeur holds onto the ball too long (often because of hte lack of O line)
3) play calling is crap. Why run a long pass to the sideline in your own endzone? Why run a shotgun delay on 4th and inches?
4) Defense is horrible.
5) Run game is non-existent
6) no team chemistry

Is Prime really just doing waht he can to push his kids' numbers and help in the draft? It's possible. He's proven he has no loyalties to anybody except for his family....and I get it.
I would nto be shocked if he leaves after thsi season....especialy if things don't go well for the team.

Brinign in outside players is the way of the future. Can't change that. But you're not building a program....you're spot-piecing together a team of 'who are they' every year. You don't know what you're going to have at all.

Is the coachign staff really P4 material?

I would disagree on the defense. Last year we were 130 in total D, right now we are 97. Not great by any objective standard, but comparatively improved. Add to that, paired with an offense that is run by a guy who could not find his rump with both hands and a roadmap, gives some hope. I would give LIvingston some slack.

BTW, dead last defense? The Bronco Mendenhall mini-van runs it at UNM...it could have been worse.

Lack of any run game is allowing opponents front seven on defense to sell out on rushing the QB without being overly concerned about things like gap assignments and holding the edges. I’ve never seen a team have a good offense that can’t run the ball (or mimic a running game through short passes). Plus there are no safety valves to the TE or running backs.

Defense is significantly improved, but it’s been put in horrible positions with a lot of three and outs and no time of possession on offense.

Considering all of your misspelled words, are you certain you have recovered from Saturday night? Seems you may still be hungover.

Boils down to daddy ball. You can't have players around #2 outshine him. Travis is a freak. But we can not have a RB that might steal the spotlight. On top of that stat padding is trying to take place. Need to play a scheme and win the stats follow.
Our offense looks like backyard ball... take the snap everyone go deep.

Yeah, being so enamored with the WR position as the expense of TEs and the running game is wild. Part of why I thought Pat Shurmur would be solid with a full offseason is because he knows the value of the running game, uses a TE, etc from his entire career in the NFL. I think Slider said it, but I think it's evident that this is Shurmur's offense tailored to what Shedeur knows and wants to do and Prime/Shurmur have given Shedeur carte blanche.

Nah that's not it. Daddy Ball is Dan forcing Cody to start when Tyler Hansen was clearly the better QB. Shedeur is the starter because he's a top 2-3 QB in the country and is the difference between 1-11/2-10 and a potential bowl game this year.

I think we all see the issues pretty accurately. Unfortunately, it’s not often that you see a team fix its run game mid-season.

I don't expect us to ever have a great rushing attack with Shedeur at QB, but the only reason I have hope that things can get better is because "fixing the run game" in this context is merely calling more run plays that aren't just Shotgun hand offs and certainly not only in obvious run situations (3rd/4th and short).

RK said it in a roundabout way on yesterday's pod, but Shedeur excusing the lack of rushing attempts by saying they tried multiple times and got stuffed every time is a self fulfilling prophecy. Have to run it on 1st and 10 and 2nd and 7 so that when you're in 3rd and 1, you have the entire playbook at your disposal, but when they're just so pass heavy and then they line up in their 2 TE set on short yardage, it's not fooling anyone.

If SS2 is really overriding the OC and calling what he wants, he will get his come uppance in the form of a stifling pass rush the rest of the way.

Got to get Hayden and Augustave in there more
Super frustrated that we actually have some real RB Dogs that each have something to offer and have not seen any of them get a shot

Hayden is a very good all around P4 Tailback - Salaam (Not full comparison, not fair, RIP)
Welch is a bowling ball with major low center of gravity and power - EB
Augustave has a really nice forward lean and finish, ala Chris Brown
Hood is supposedly super fast - JJ Flanagan style

Yet, we have to focus on knowing #2 is the man

I love Shedeur, he is amazing, but John Elway never won without TD

Wake up Buffs, or we are going to lose every single one of these backs

Smalls is a 5-Star mega athlete that surely can hit people
Hart spent 3 years blocking for Ohio State RB's

One other thing that could be discussed is how good of blockers our WR's are.
I saw Sheppard blocking hard on a play or two, and Omarion Miller was blocking last week, but ???

I am straight worried about O Miller and keeping him in Boulder, he is too talented to be doghoused

Yeah if we don't start winning, and don't stop with some of the weird personnel decisions, we will see another exodus but this time with even more talent and without the same influx.

I feel like we have deals with Sheppard, Wester, Horn, Travis (of course), Hodge, and Shilo (injured now) for SNAP COUNTS?

Prime said at halftime in Nebraska that he wanted OTHER guys in on the offense, and yet, where was Omarion, where was Timmons?

Think Omarion was benched after floating on that pick 6? That’s what i assumed.
