Big 12 Basketball Blackout Rules

Well, I was frustrated that I have DirecTV with the regional sports package yet had the BB game last night blacked out. So I wrote FSN RM about it. Their response:

Thanks for taking the time to contact us regarding CU men's basketball being blacked out in Virginia. I understand your frustration, but the Big 12 Conference has territorial restrictions and regional Colorado men's basketball telecasts on FSN cannot be shown outside the state of Colorado. With that said, Friday night's national telecast between CU and Oregon State on FSN will be shown outside of Colorado (bad news is that it will be about 11 p.m. EST following a DU hockey game).

Again, this is a Big 12 Conference rule; however, like you said all other CU-related programming can be viewed outside of Colorado.

I apologize for this inconvenience and we really appreciate you as a viewer...especially one who is fan of Colorado athletics outside of the state. Please let me know if you have any other questions.

Now, I don't know the reasoning behind that rule, but don't you think the Big 12 would WANT to have their product in as many markets as possible?

Probably spending too much time and effort in this but the B12 official site has this in their TV/RADIO FAQ:

ESPN purchased the rights to be the exclusive national network for Big 12 basketball and thereby does not allow a local package game to be telecast outside of the state (and border cities) of the participating teams. The network does allow games to be distributed on ESPN Full Court and ESPN360.com; but schools can not televise or stream via the Internet any game outside of its state unless ESPN has turned down the opportunity to carry on ESPN Full Court first. Many 'displaced' fans see this as a disservice but without such a restriction a school could replicate a national network (or sell games to another national cable network) and impact the ESPN exclusive distribution rights. It is difficult for many fans to understand how this could impact ESPN negatively. Owning the exclusive national distribution rights is important as it impacts advertising, ratings, clearances, cable penetration and other factors.

Same deal with the Nugs, all their games on Altitude are blacked out to protect the NBA League Pass package. Almost defeats the purpose of getting all the Fox Sports regionals if you can't see most of the games that are on there.

The other thing that sucks is that ESPN apparently has agreements with the cable companies to determine who can and cannot stream ESPN360.com.

Example: The first CU BBall game of the season was being carried on ESPN360. I logged on figuring it would just "load up" but no. It asked to choose my internet/cable provider from a drop down menu. Well, TimeWarner wasn't there so I chose other, and after giving up my zip code I got the nice message "We're sorry, but TimeWarner is not a authorized carrier of ESPN360 in your region."

So I'm now doubly ****ED! ****ERS!

• A. At this time, the membership is committed to its current partnerships with ABC/ESPN (football and men's basketball), FSN (football and Olympic sports) and their own local packages. The Big 12 was the first conference in the country (as of January 1, 2008) to be guaranteed three days per week for men's basketball on ESPN and ESPN2. In addition, the commitment of games to ESPNU provides the Big 12 with a solid national platform for basketball. These factors and the strength of the school local packages currently satisfy the memberships exposure concern; but the Big 12 monitors the marketplace on a daily basis and will continue to evaluate the need for a dedicated channel.

:yeahthat: I have the fullcourt package and if its not picked up by full court out of staters don't get the game. Its been this way for at least 2 years now..
