DALLAS -- Big 12 commissioner Bob Bowlsby says "cheating pays" in the NCAA these days and doesn't foresee things getting much better in the future.

During his annual state-of-the-league address from Big 12 media days Monday, Bowlsby slammed the NCAA, notably the enforcement wing of college sports' governing body.

"Enforcement is broken," he said. "The infractions committee hasn't had [an FBS] hearing in almost a year, and I think it's not an understatement to say cheating pays presently. If you seek to conspire to certainly bend the rules, you can do it successfully and probably not get caught in most occasions."

A conference with Oklahoma, okie state, Baylor, mizzery, wvu, and kjuco state is hardly a paragon of virtue.

Sure. But Bowlsby doesn't really represent them. He's the Big 12 commish, so he's only speaking for UT here.

I believe you hit the truth in your op-- this is posturing for more autonomy so the power 5 can institutionalize more professionalization of the rev generating sports. And it has the added benefit of throwing red meat to the b12 fan base who thinks that they are as good as the sec minus the cheating. He says all this while condemning the obannon suit and the union issues as he talks about the "amateurism" of the student athlete.

The hypocrisy of college sports is wearing on me.
 
Missouri isn't in the Big 12...

And to act like the SEC doesn't get away with murder is laughable. $Cam Newton? Nothing to see here. Johnny Autograph? Nothing to see here. And those were just the two highest profile dudes. The whole conference is slimy.

I don't care that much because we still pimp slapped Saban and Bama, but they really don't care about rules.

Stoops runs one of the biggest and most high profile programs in the country. He's disciplined and kicked off starting QBs, RBs, WRs. He doesn't shy from the rules and punishing the rule breakers. He also doesn't participate in over signing.

As much **** as we give OU and UT fans, they do run pretty clean programs relative to the SEC. Though not every body in the Big12 does. Cough cough Okie Light cough cough.
 
Stoops runs a decent program, but historically, OU has a reputation for bending the rules liberally. UT is just a bunch of whiney bitches.

What was your final record in 2005 again? And please use your vacated wins from the ncaa ruling after you got punished for cheating.

Agree on all counts. You've also got a university president who has done an amazing job of maintaining athletic prestige while significantly raising academic prestige.

Completely different than our friend in Stillwater.

I'm not saying that Oklahoma is doing everything right. I'm sure there are minor infractions, boosters giving some extra benefits and agents aggressively trying to get their hooks into players (sometimes succeeding)... just like everywhere else. There's also on the discipline issue of taking a guy like Dorial Green-Beckham that history shows Stoops would have kicked off his team if he'd done the same stuff at Oklahoma. Bit of hypocrisy there, but we're all hypocrites when it comes to "never giving up on a kid" when he's got a ton of talent and our coach decides to roll the dice with him. In its history, Switzer would wheel and deal for recruits with the best of them.

But in today's major college football landscape, Oklahoma is one of the good guys. They'd also be in the PAC if it weren't for the fact that they were tied to Oklahoma State.

this leads to an interesting question for me: if i had the power to give one program the death penalty, who would it be?

since we gave ourselves the near-death penalty a few years back, i think it is only fair we should be able to pick another program for the lightning strike.

Miami for being Miami, most recently for the boats and 'hos scandal.
Iowa State for being in Ames.
Mizzou -- they chose the SEC over the B1G, assume its due to academic integrity issues.
Baylor -- nothing personal like you guys have, but I enjoy seeing private, religious-based schools in trouble for breaking the rules and Baylor seems to be the strongest candidate right now.
