Breaking news: Rick Reilly still a douche

Used to see Reilly a lot down at Reivers in Denver. He always seemed to have the sniffles.

Say I broke that, would you, Walleye?

Its pretty hard to have any respect for a jock-sniff like Reilly. He does write some decent human interest stuff at times. I guess thats why I never have seen the fascination with guys like this AZ character you boys are always obsessing over. Does this guy really make a living doing this? Incredible. I think I just got dumber thinking about it.

I thought R.R was closely related to that other douche bag, and former B-12 beat writer on eee s pee n. Tim Griffin?
 
Rick Reilly gave a keynote speech at the UMC when I was a freshman at CU. At the time, I was a journalism major and an aspiring sports writer. I'd been reading Reilly's back page column in SI for years and was a big fan. So I was excited to have the opportunity to hear him in person. (Obviously this was pre-ESPN by a number of years).

I stayed afterwards to talk to him, and he couldn't have been any nicer, accommodating or supportive toward some punk kid he didn't know. He gave me some advice on how to be a better writer, and was just a genuinely nice guy.

So it's disappointing that his ESPN career has been such a disaster. I think he's an excellent writer who made a bad career move, and has let the ESPN culture get the best of him. But I will always be grateful to the 2002-2003 version of Rick Reilly.

Wasn't he trashing CU during the hnida scandal and his daughter got busted during a party at HIS house?

I don't know if it was so much the "Hnida" part of the scandal, but he wrote in SI that he was ashamed to be a CU alumna and hid his ring when he was in public, and then there was a party at his house where a girl claimed she was raped while incapacitated (not sure if charges were ever filed or anyone was ever convicted). It was the ultimate case of karma.

And yet, somehow, he's been somewhat welcomed back into the fold at CU. If I were RG (or Benson, for that matter) I'd tell Rick Reilly to go screw and keep hiding his relationship to the university unless he wants to write a 6 figure apology check.
