Brick Wall of Victories

Not that we need any further evidence of Hawk's absolute ineptitude, but seriously, painting over a wall of bricks of milestone victories? It's too bad some of this stuff didn't come out years ago, the torchlit mob would have forced a change a year or two earlier... but then again maybe things needed to happen exactly like they happened in order for us to be where we are.

On a wall in the hallway just outside the Buffs locker room, there used to be about 40 cinder blocks painted gold with black writing displaying dates and scores of big wins in the program`s history. The tradition of painting those bricks was started by former coach Bill McCartney in the 1980s. Hawkins painted over those bricks as he did so many other traditions held near and dear to the hearts of former players in an effort to put his stamp on the program. Embree is acutely aware of how annoyed former players were by the move when they visited the Dal Ward Center in recent years and has promised to bring back the wall of big wins.

Oh, and Coach Mac rules (watch end):

It´s almost like Hawk needed to convince himself that he had to rebuild a nuclear wasteland, which is why he erased everything pre-Hawk from Dal Ward. A bit like a con man or charlatan.

Again where the **** were you Mike Bohn when this **** went down? How is it that you were so removed from the football program you didnt know this was happening and didnt step in and stop it, or did you agree it was a good idea?

So what happened to the old bricks? Are they just painted over or what?
Embo seemed to indicate that they were painted over but that they can be recovered once the 2011 posts some signature wins. Whether that means that they'll get them back by stripping the top coat or just re-paint the old wins that someone has on record, I don't know. What a disaster.

"BUY UP THE STADIUM! FILL THE STADIUM!" Love Mac.

I was wondering the same thing. I understand giving your coach autonomy, but there should be some checks and balances as well. This seems like one of the instances where a higher up should have been asking, "Just what the hell do you think you're doing?"

This is a good point. I can only assume that DII was "his guy", so he was allowing him to run amok. In reality this kind of crap should have given Bohn pause before offering that contract extension. People like to praise Bohn for his handling of the PAC12, Bz/Boyle, etc. I will praise him for that, but his handling of the football program has been abysmal. I think Embree is a good hire and we are heading in the right direction, but it is disturbing that he ignored his greatest asset for so long.

So if HaLk had been hired by Notre Dame would he have painted over the Play like a champion today sign? It sounds like a dumb question but honestly I don't know.

If CU took football seriously Bohn would have been replaced two years ago and lets not start patting him on the back as far BB goes just yet.

You simply cant have you AD monitoring and micro-managing everything that goes on in the football operations. Sure some of it is tradition and should not be touched, but being in-love with tradition is just as dangerous as ignoring it, look at Notre Dumb and Bama before Saban.

If I'm the AD at CU I know about all the comings and goings of the only revenue producer for the AD.

He probably did it because we didn't have many significant wins in the last couple years. Not that it excuses it. The wall would have looked a little funny stacked from 1988-2001 and nothing really after that

I think that Bohn did make some mistakes in his handling of the contract extensions for Hawkins and allowing him to destroy the traditions of the program for so long, but let's be honest, how many of us were super excited when we hired Hawkins in 05? I admit that I was ecstatic that we were able to "steal" him away from Boise. Now, I think it's pretty unfair to say that his handling of basketball isn't successful - he hired Bzdelik (who took AFA from nothing and brought them back) and then when Bzdelik turned his back on the Buffs, he went out and got Tad Boyle. This is Boyle's "dream job" and hell.. He was able to recruit and most importantly DEVELOP players in Greeley, Colorado of all places. Have you ever been to Greeley?!?! It's worse than Lincoln! Also, he has gotten the practice facility for Bball and volleyball off the ground and has made it clear that we are dedicated to having a competent basketball program here.

I think that Embree and Bieniemy will restore the "swagger" back to the football program and maintain a solid connection to the former traditions and players. He already has brought back Salaam, is bringing Crosby back to help with kickers, and I'm sure that all players are welcome back to help contribute to the program.

I think that Bohn has been doing a good job (not great) but the conference switch and hiring of TB, JE, EB, and Linda Lappe (can't forget the WBB program) are positive signs. Hopefully we keep up the positive momentum from these events and translate it to a solid product on the field! Go Buffs!

I think Bohn gets too much credit for he Conference move. Lets be honest its the size of the television market and quality fit academics wise.

Its pretty clear that you are not a fan of Bohn, but with out the benefit of hindsight what has he really ****ed up?

I'm sorry about my outburst about Greeley... maybe I should have said... worse than... Ames, IA?

Lincoln is nicer than Greeley. Never been to Ames, hoping to keep it that way. Back on topic:

Order is restored in regard to tradition, now it's time to see if Embree and Co. have the chops to put it on the grass.

CSU contract
Hawk's contract

Those are the two biggies. He should be reaching out to fans more, too, especially on a day like signing day. Radio silence is small time.

As much as you and I hate the CSU game, there are a lot of CU fans, especially young potential students who don't. I also believe there is state level political pressure to maintain the series.

Hawk's contract was premature at best.

I haven't heard OU's or OSU's athletic directors on the airwaves down here. Just sayin.

Radio silence from the AD on signing day is what I'm talking about as small time. Treating everyone outside the AD (including fans) as part of the problem is small time. Bunker mentality is small time.

But he gave up games in Folsom and got nothing in return. The last contract with CSU had 3 out of the 7 games in Boulder. For the next 10 years, none of them will be in Boulder.

Bohn sucks at negotiating, IMO. He gives **** away and gets nothing back for it.

As for Hawk's contract, I don't necessarily blame Bohn for the extension. What I blame him for is not renegotiating the buyout language when he gave the extension. Again, giving **** away and getting nothing for it.

The list is long - Women's Basketball hire. Hawkins extension, WBB coach extension, Hiring of Bzdelik ( I don't know why people think that Bz was such a great hire). He screwed up the parking for fans. He had little to do with the PAC 12 move and had almost nothing to do with the hiring of Embree (and that was by design). I will hold my judgement on the recent Basketball hires but I am unimpressed.

The more that leaks out about what happened during the Hawk Era I keep asking myself how does that happen. How does a coach come into a university and hide the tradition. cover up the history. mock what the football program used to stand for.

The victory wall makes absolutely no sense that he would cover it up. Covering up victories?? for what purpose.

Covering up the sign in the auditorium. The quote was from Mac. It was from our NC season era. It was a time of CU dominance and you take it down like it bothers you??

The lack of red hating in the Dal Ward Center. The lack of emphasis on our rival.

Completely alienating alumni and former players that gave their all for this program and only wish to come back and give a little more.

I just don't understand what Hawkins thought he was gaining.

He was making it about him so when (in his mind, anyway) the team turned it around and started winning big, it would be because of him.

**** D2 Dan and his enormous ego.

He thought that he was getting Control.

He is a small man with an infinite ego. Hindsight being what it is, all of his decisions make a lot more sense to me now then they ever did. From personnel decisions, to program directives....it was all about Hawkins('s)
