CU Women’s Basketball vs. #14 Arizona
Things were heating up in Boulder heading into Friday's showdown with #14 Arizona. The CU Women's basketball team was on a roll, having won their previous five games. Looking to continue their hot streak, the Buffs were tasked with the challenging task of beating the 14th ranked Wildcats.
Game Summary
The Buffs took control from the start, jumping out to a quick 15-4 lead. The Wildcats were able to cut the lead to just two at the half. Arizona was unable to grab the lead coming out of halftime but managed to keep things within striking distance. Despite seemingly dominating the game, it was too close for comfort at the end. Things got intense in the fourth quarter when the Wildcats tied the game with under five minutes to play. The Buffs stopped Arizona's run with stellar defense and clutch buckets down the stretch. Led by strong performances from Aaronette Vonleh, Quay Miller and Frida Formann, the Buffs stifled any momentum the Wildcats had built. Frida Formann iced the game from the line, leading the Buffs to a massive 72-65 win against #14.
Too Many Turnovers
Back to back wins against ranked Pac-12 opponents is a big deal, but the Buffs need to focus on turnovers heading into next weekend. An alarming 19 turnovers led to 26 Arizona points. The Buffs were dominating most aspects of the game, it shouldn’t have been as close as it was.
Fantastic Fundamentals
The Buffs were able to compensate for their turnovers by playing lockdown defense and smothering the glass. The intensity was established early as the Buffs held Arizona to 4-14 to start the game. Additionally, they played amazing defense to close out the game and spoil Arizona's comeback. The Buffs had a +19 advantage in rebounds, and grabbed a total of 16 offensive rebounds. Playing with energy will take the Buffs far, especially if they can get the turnovers under control.
What's next?
The Buffs were supposed to face ASU at home Sunday night, but due to a lack of players Arizona State was forced to forfeit. The Buffs will receive a conference win for the forfeit, but their overall record will not change. After two massive ranked wins in Boulder, The Buffs turn their attention to Cal and Stanford when they head to California this upcoming weekend.
