After four weeks, new strength and conditioning coach Malcolm Blacken will give head football coach Jon Embree a written evaluation of every returning player. "I'll know who's working, who's not and what it means to them," Blacken said.

After four weeks, Blacken, who brings a strong college and NFL background to CU, will give Embree a written evaluation of every returning player. "I'll know who's working, who's not and what it means to them. Football means different things to different people," Blacken said. "I can get a pretty good feel - I don't have it yet - but I will know after four weeks what it means to them."

Hells yeah!!!!

Things at Dal Ward gonna be changing.

Wow!

I just read through this a 2nd time. I've got a major mancrush on Coach Blacken.

You guys will want to read this one.

I don't think I've heard a single kinda or sorta from any of Embree's new staff. Love it!

[FONT=Cambria, serif]"You might not get your 45 seconds (of rest)," he said. "You know it's coming . . . if we do 10 half-gassers, there are going to be two changes of possessions, but you'll never know when they're coming. In that player's mind, he's always ready to go. He knows I may get my 45 seconds of rest, I may not. That's the beauty of it, because that's what football is . . . expect it and be comfortable with it. It's that 'getting comfortable being uncomfortable' phase we talked about. That will show itself.

[FONT=Cambria, serif]my HS basketball coach used to do this stuff. old school guy. never had stand alone FT practice (you did that on your own, not on his time)....it was always in the middle of running gassers or working on the diamond press when you were dead tired. that's how it is in games. you never walk up to the stripe well-rested....it's in the game...when you are dogged and sweat dripping off your nose and the ball is slick.

nice article. i'm a bit skeptical of the stuff of the CU site (kind of rah rah)....but i like this hire.

Been said before, but let me say it again. Articles like this make me wish the season was starting tomorrow. The talent may not be all the way there, but these kids are going to be ready to get after it.

My only negative about this is that we hear the same kind of stuff everytime a new S&C guy comes in. It does not seem like any of those guys have transferred the results to the field in quite some time. I sure HOPE this guy is the real deal this time.

Oh ye of little faith! The lack of ego is refreshing. Emboner engorged again!

"I've always been a motivator; I've always been the guy, with all due respect to the head coach, left in the locker room when the O-line and D-line are coming out last to warm up," he said. "I'm in there with those guys, in there with the big guys. That's where we, as we say in our profession, get our minds right.

"I will be wherever Coach Embree needs me to be. I'll hold the sticks if he wants me to."

I liked the interview and I'm excited about Blacken. However, I agree with DBT. I heard the same thing when Pit came on board, how only x number of guys could squat x pounds. It seems like there is a life cycle with s&c coaches. Loved at first, but if the team loses then a huge amount of blame goes their way.

The proof will be in the pudding fellas. Hawk and staff inflated numbers and alot of programs do it mind you. Youll be able to tell on the field how much they have been working. I like the hire and he better get them ready because, if I read the schedule right, we dont have one damn bye week.

Okay, I'm on board with what he's saying, but I'm a little confused about one thing. The "45 second" comment -- I suppose he's only talking about change of possession, right? Last time I checked, some of these multiple-option, fast-break offenses were trying to run a play about every 20-25 seconds.

Blacken also went to school at VT...that should be a bonus since he knows what some big time programs do.

This team is charmin soft but dont worry Black(en) Dynamite's gonna shake the tree from the roots, rake up the fruits, rip it up out the ground to find out what's goin down.

This article made me happy. I look forward to seeing the results of this on the field next season.

It was a play on how excited most of us are that the coaches seem onfident and do not use wishy-washy words. Yet DBT was wishy-washy about the article. So I just made his post appropriatly wishy-washy. You know, if I have to explain every obscure referrence that is made here on Allbuffs to you it will become very tireing.:smile2:

I Nominate "Black(en) Dynamite" for his official nickname.

I'm with DBT here. Every new regime puts out the baloney. I really hope we have the attitude Embo and staff are talking about...but talk is cheap. Pittman was "blue collar" and had his wheelbarrow and sand and all that crap. Just talk, no results. I also remember how Marques Harris was unblockable, Phil Jackson had an unreal backpeddle and CH was "taller than Major Applewhite and had a stronger arm". It's all talk until something is shown on the field.

Do I like the guy's attitude? Yes. Am I 100% behind Embo, his staff and the Buffs? Yes. Can I recognize a puff piece? Yes.

racist?

(better check with nik)

Am I the PC Policeman? Damn. I really don't want that.

As long as I'm typing, though:

1) Malcolm Blacken is, in fact, black.
2) Blacken is, in fact, his name.
3) There is no negative or prejudicial connotation to the "Black Dynamite" movie reference. (It was a spoof of the 1970s era "blacksploitation" flicks that was written, directed and starred in by black folks.)

Not sure I'm crazy about the nickname, but I don't see how it could be called racist.
