Let's start with our next opponent first, since all Mike Mac preaches about is going 1-0 and focusing on the opponent at hand. Well, the Buffs NEED this win and WILL get it. This isn't your 2013 Oregon State team or 2013 Buffs team. The Buffs are getting closer to that next step. Unfortunately getting closer most likely means another losing season and hoping the Buffs can get a couple wins in the Pac 12 for next year, but for now back to “The” Oregon State University (Also known as the third best OSU, aka the worse OSU).
This OSU has lost it's WOW factor on offense. After losing Markus Wheaton and Brandin Cooks in consecutive years, the Beavers are without that dynamic threat with NFL talent for Mannion to look elite. Mannion has looked like a completely ordinary QB in 2014. Their offense has sputtered and they have had to lean heavily on a running game they have underutilized for years because of their former dynamic passing game. OSU lost a great deal on both lines and it has shown in some of the hits Mannion has taken and OSU was completely ineffective against a USC team that got handled by Boston College two weeks before. CU's secondary is suspect, especially with Tedric Thompson out. Fortunately all signs point to TT returning against the Beavers. Cal is a better offense than Oregon State and CU has a lot of fire in their belly. Mannion should find some success with the long ball that he’s been missing in 2014 with CU still suspect to the big play and Oregon State should put up offensive numbers, but they are a team that has taken a step back and potentially missing the post-season.
CU's offense finally has started to click in the passing game. Sefo showed the comfort throwing the ball ANYWHERE on the field we had not seen. Cal's defense is crap, but Oregon State has had issues of it's own. As long as Sefo doesn’t look like the QB in the 2[SUP]nd[/SUP] Half of Hawaii, the Buffs should be able to put up 35 points or more with ease.
This is a game the Buffs will be angry and hungry for. They should have beat Cal and they had the things that had been holding them together in Tedric Thompson, Darragh O’Neill and Will Oliver really kill them. Additionally, they allowed the big plays that have doomed them for years hit them repeatedly due to poor tackling and pursuit angles. I hate to call a kid out, especially one that was the glue to the defense last year, but Addison Gillam is a liability instead of a strength. Last year there was one bad play for every 10 great ones he made. This year it’s a 50-50 bet. Addison does not look like the same kid as 2013. If he is injured, sit him. His pursuit and tackling has killed the team a number of times. There are other players that start that have similar woes, but if he isn’t big enough and can’t get it done, that’s life. You sit and get better. I have been very impressed every time I have seen Brady Daigh play in the past two years. Last year, he was just not as good as the kid ahead of him in Gillam. This year he has been.
The Buffs offense looked sharp against Cal. After cursing the ground Michael Adkins II walked on, he really made some nice plays near the end of the Cal game. Tony Jones has looked like a young man playing his last season of football, looking like a threat every time he has touched the ball. Other than the HI 2[SUP]nd[/SUP] half, the Buffs have been an absolutely crisp offense.
I could ramble on and on, but the Buffs get their first Pac 12 win tomorrow. Oregon State is getting too much respect, like Cal, being a near touchdown favorite on the road after looking completely inept at USC last week. The Buffs have the bad blood from Mannion rubbing it in on them last year and have a bad taste in their mouth after having to eat the crap sandwich they helped serve up in a game they should have won last week. Mike Riley is an arrogant ass and the Beavers can go build a dam in Corvallis because I don’t give a DAMN about them or their feelings in being the little sister school in Oregon. Leave it to Beaver is outdated and so was the short success OSU had, Buffs win 38-28.
