Buffs Special Teams Don't Suck

It's been posted elsewhere, but what the hell are the coaches thinking with Oliver still fielding punts? He good. He also gonna get injured.

Oliver is a great athlete. What I have seen so far though isn't a great punt returner, doesn't seem to have the instincts. He is still likely to break a few big ones simply because he is so fast and quick but if we can get somebody else back there most of the time I'm for it.

You can probably wait for Udub to find out how well the unit is gonna cover. Also, as far as Oliver on punt returns, they were saying he was dancing around too much. That about right? Also, I saw the clip of Laviska on the punt return on Sports Center. He doesn't look like a freshman, he's way bigger than I thought.

Special teams have definitely improved.
Coverage remains untested.
Placekicking and punting have definitely improved - and we now have athletes quick enough to give people a reason to fair catch the ball or let it be a touchback. To BP's point, though, we shall see against UW and UCLA to start the season.

By the way, UCLA gave up 44 and 23 points respectively in their wins against aTm and Hawaii. Our game against them looks like it will be 35-34 type affair.

I did not like Oliver's returns yesterday. The fumble could have been a disaster in conference play if no Buffs are there to recover. On another return he caught it right in front of the Texas State bench and had at least 10-15 yards of daylight on the sideline but instead cut inside and was tackled immediately.

Watching Kinney in warm ups and he was booming 'em. He reminded me of watching a PGA pro on the driving range. He hit 3 in a row from the north 40 to the south 2. The guy catching them hardly had to move. Perfect spirals with lots of hang time.

He may be the most improved player on the entire team. Winning the field position battle is going to be big when playing good Pac 12 teams.

What I really like about Kinney this season is not just his distance but that he is controlling where he puts the ball. He has consistently kicked away from the returners so they have to run just to get to the ball. A good number of his punts have dropped and rolled deeper, no return.

Kinney is 24th in the country, averaging 45.7 yards/punt right now. Let's see if that holds up as he starts seeing a rush, etc.

PS - I think most folks know this but Stefano is 4-5 on FGs, all from 30-40 yards, plus 5-5 on XPs so far. Tied for 12th in FG attempts and tied for 11th in FG makes. I don't want to lead in either of those categories, but a promising start.

agree, and on that play, it is better to go ahead and go down. We saw him fumble which is bad, could have gotten injured.
