BOULDER – The University of Colorado outdoor track and field season got off to a blazing start despite the cold, windy and snowy conditions on Friday and Saturday at the second annual Jerry Quiller Classic at Potts Field.
Emily Hunsucker had a great start to her season, breaking her school record in the hammer throw by more than five feet. The 2013 All-American in the event opened up the day with a personal best of 212 feet, 11 inches, smashing her previous record of 207-10. Hunsucker’s throw currently ranks second in the NCAA behind USC’s Remy Conaster (230-4).
She had a great series of throws to start the year. After recording a foul on her second throw, she came back with a toss of 212-5 on her third attempt. Hunsucker easily advanced to the finals and had three more solid throws at 212-5, 201-9 and 208.3. All of her fair marks were good enough to win the meet as the runner-up. Colorado State’s Jessica Sharbono, recorded a best mark of 179-6 to win the event. In addition, Hunsucker’s teammate, Sophie Hallam-Eames, also had a good performance finishing fourth with a huge PR of 169-7. The mark destroyed her former PR of 142-11.
