BuffZone 01/08/2012 Mailbag talks about chair back seats coming to Folsom Field

It seems like there are some hints out there in the coming renovations to Folsom Field in the BuffZone Mailbag article dated 01/08/2012.
Question: Greetings from Venice, FL. I really enjoy reading Buffzone. I lived in Colorado for 50 years, went to junior high, high school. and college in Boulder. My feelings for CU are very strong and your communication helps me keep up-to-date. I usually get back to Boulder to watch at least one football game. I missed this year but saw the Buffs in Columbus, OH instead. One question I have about Folsom Field is this. Has any consideration been given to removing those bench seats and installing individual chairs with backs? If everybody in a row were to rent a seat back, they would not all fit. Kyle's answer: Budd, thanks for reading and staying in touch. Yes, chair backs are something the athletic department hopes to add in the near future. They might not come in every part of the stadium all at once, but they are coming. When they do make this move, it might trim the capacity of the stadium a little, but when CU eventually builds its practice facility and expands the Dal Ward Center, enclosing the northeast corner of the stadium, it should even out.

I could see chair backs in seats between the 20's. In the south endzone, having bleachers for the students makes a lot more sense I think. You can squeeze in a lot more kids, and not have to deal with broken seats due to intoxicated students.

Also true. I just know how much a pain it is sometimes moving down rows, at say Coors Field with the armrests/cup holders/people in the individual seats. For students I think Bleachers are much better
 
Question: I don't see any 6'3"+, 4.4+ WRs among the 22 recruits to date. Is this indicative of how poorly our wideouts are to be in 2012? Also, if we are going to remain in a pro-set offense, where's the 6'2"+/ 225+ pound, 4.5+ power FB among the recruits? -- David Parnes

I think the WRs he alluded to were last seen dominating NFL playoff games in New Orleans and Denver. No pressure for the coaches to find comparable players IMO.

It was interesting that KR took the opportunity to talk about the practice facility when the question was about seats. I took the lesser capacity comment being due to the seats rather than benches, not due to closing in the corner.

The more we hear about this, the more I'm getting my hopes up for this work getting done. I need to remember that it could be a while...
 
Just ****ing great! Right after I get a stadium seat for Christmas. Next year I'm asking Santa for a field house.

At least there will be a place for that stadium seat when women's lacrosse gets going. :thumbsup:
 
A little concerned about Ringo's assessment on the seating expansion. He states that we're only looking to enclose the NE corner, not the entire North end. He also states that by putting in the seatbacks, that the expansion will only replace the seats lost because of the improvements. That's not good.

In all honesty, there is absolutely no reason at this time to begin thinking of expansions to folsom that would increase seating by any large amount. We do not sell out games as is. Bring 3 straight seasons of sell outs and then talk about a north endzone expansion. Besides Ringo is thinking out loud, I highly doubt we will lose enough seats by converting from benches that a NE expansion would only replaces those lost seats. I would imagine after the expansion we would be looking at roughly 55,000 seats which would actually be a slight increase in capacity. Staying status quo does nothing for the AD.

I don't know ... adding seating capacity in the corner endzone is probably not the best return on investment. So, if the NE endzone seats basically replace those lost by putting in chairbacks on the sidelines, then any seating expansion would come with the reno/demolition of Balch and would be sideline seats, which would be a better way to expand anyway (better sightlines for the fans, and bigger $$$ for the AD because sideline seats would bring a higher price than endzone ones). And, even if they don't increase capacity with this round, I think adding chairbacks on the sidelines and improving the seating in the corner(s) would give better bang for the buck anyway.

The time to expand is before you need the space, not after. We put 50,000 people into a stadium to watch a 3-10 team. We're going to need the extra space once we have a worthwhile team. The time to expand is now.
 
More than anything, I am glad to see the AD is finally addressing the fan experience at football games. New video boards and chairbacks are not groundbreaking amenities by any stretch, but they will definitely improve the overall gameday experience at Folsom. The people on this board are going to go to games regardless, but to draw in and keep casual fans coming back, stuff like these upgrades are essential.

However say we boost it to 70,000 seats and we are still only getting 50,000 in then we have a very big problem. A lack of sellouts shows a lack of demand for the product on the field. If people can still walk up and buy tickets the day of a game then expansion talk will only be talk. If in the next two years embo gets us in to an upper tier bowl game, and possibly the top 25 for some period of time, then I agree we will need to expand. But in order to do any of it there needs to be a need, there isnt one yet.

I just hope the new video boards, come with a new sound system
 
the chairbacks don't have to take up any seats. At Washington, they had bleachers with seat backs and it worked just fine

The corners on the north side need to be closed in regardless. The sight lines for the end sections on both sides suck. Try to make it as much like the south end as possible. Dal Ward expansion needs to include this imo.

I don't disagree at all - the north end of the stadium desperately needs to be reworked. It will make those seats easier to sell, even if it doesn't add to capacity. Any large-scale increase of capacity should happen on the west side.
 
truthfully, we should make the top half of the enclosure a lot like Okie lite's (their version of dal ward is most of one endzone)
