Ok....several of us predicted a disastrous 2012 season because Bohn retained Danny that fateful thanksgiving weekend whenever it was a few years ago. Then, we all jumped on the optimism train in the last few months. Reset the clock.....it will take time for Jon and staff to right the ship.
Yes....we saw many seemingly horrible coaching decisions yesterday. But, we have no choice to rally around the staff and the team. 2013 is the year of judgement. Maybe we can squeeze out a few wins this year.
If we are watching the same **** product on the field in two years, then we should raise hell. For now, we all need to chill. Not in my nature.....but give it a go!
+1, reluctantly. I have my doubts, but we cannot pull the plug this year. I am an admitted kool-aid drinker, hell I wasn't even worried about us not winning this game until we went 3 and out with like 7 minutes left in the game. Here's why I think we need to keep our staff this year. These observations came from being at the game, and not watching the replay on TV.
1. You can count our seniors on 2 hands, and one of our captains got hurt. At that point, we were (modern day CU) cruising, up 14-3.
2. I thought our Defense played pretty well. Now that could be because CSU is awful. Their QBs first pass yesterday might have landed in the 4th row.
3. I thought Webb threw pretty well when given time (will come back to this in the negatives). But also I give props to him for running over that DB. That was sweet, he fought hard.
4. Tyler was magically able to get open on 10-14 yard hooks in the first half, despite having no speed.
5. If we fire our coach after 2 years, we'll have a tough time hiring the next guy because he knows he won't have much time. Our coaches should be given the opportunity to fail with "their guys"
6. ......uhhhhh.........I'm running out of positives.......uhhhh........Embry is an emotional guy, and I like having an emotional guy as a head coach for a college team.....
Now, reasons I'm concerned:
1. The positives list isn't very long
2. We heard how we weren't sure how CSU would come out. We would prepare for all kinds of stuff and then once we saw what they're doing, make proper halftime adjustments. Well....we were winning going into the half, and then scored 3 big points in the second half. Pretty awful adjustments, on offense especially.
3. Either we don't trust our kicker, or we're way too reckless. For a sucky offense, we shouldn't be going for it on 4th and 6 at like the 20. Not to mention doing it twice. I'm even more concerned that it worked, because that just means we'll probably keep doing it even though it's a bad move.
4. Defense looked much worse once Polk left. A little scared to think of what this D might look like without him, Rippy and Major.
5. Why the hell are we even attempting 43 passes against C freaking S U? We were down no more than 3 basically all game, so we shouldn't have abandoned our gameplan. Was that really our gameplan?
6. I thought Webb looked pretty good when he was in the pocket in the first half. But even in the first half, he looked TURIBLE when he was throwing on the run. I want to say that again because of how terrible he looked. He was TUR-RI-BOWL throwing on the run.......sooooooo.....why did we call so many roll out type passes in the first half? D----U----M. The second half I guess I understand because we decided to not block anybody then, and he needed to run for his life.
7. It was obvious from the get-go that CSU had no respect for our passing game / receivers. They had a bunch of guys in the box. Throw over their heads? Get the ball to the TE? We had one completely inconsequencial completion to a TE on like 3rd and 16 for 10 yards in the first half. I'm pretty sure I can only remember 4 pass attempts over 20 yards. 1 was a TD, and 2 more came when our WR ran 8 yard stops...
8. Didn't we say last year that the screen pass was a massive weapon in college because you can have OL release downfield earlier? I only remember like 3 screen attenpts. We not doing that anymore? Are we trying to do more WR screens instead? I guess I don't mind as long as they catch the ball. But we seemed to abandon that in the second half too, except for that 3rd and 10 on our last drive. That little quick pass to GT in the twins set was the only play that worked semi consistently
9. I agree with somebody on one of these boards saying that Webb didn't get the ball to guys in a position to run for more yards. WRs always seemed to be diving/sliding, or stopped when they caught it. help our your WRs dude, they need all the help they can get.
10. I heard Embree in the post game say he didn't expect Creer to be marked down short of the endzone on that TD - TD - missed 4th down play. How? They showed the replay about 15 times and it was obvious that (a) the ball came out after he was down, and (b) that he was down short of the end zone. So you need to be ready for that. And once they say, "hey bro, it's 4th down" you should know he was stopped short. Get the right play in. If you need to think about it, use a time out.
10. I'm not really a fan of everybody that's interviewed saying they have to "look at the tape." All the tape will tell you is the same thing you just saw live. We can't block, we can't catch, we can't throw, we can't run, we can't kick off or punt, we can't cover kicks offs or punts, we can't return kickoffs or punts, and we didn't make any adjustments.
11. I like having a firey coach because I think that makes the players play harder. Why is Tyler just stepping out of bounds? You're 6-5! Hit that dude in front of you and get 2.5 more yards. Especially since yards are so hard to come by on our offense. We can't do the Marvin Harrison (
p.@ssy) politely step out of bounds after you catch it. FIGHT FOR YARDAGE!!! Why didn't Embree get on him for that? He did that probably 3 times. Tyler, you need to lead us. Lead us by playing hard and not settling for yardage.
12. Maybe instead of learning to punt with both feet, we should just try to punt well. I'm not the greatest golfer, but I've got a 220 yard deadly accurate 7 iron. Basically every time I'm on the fairway and I have a ways to go, I could either try some bigger club and hit it low, or try a slight fade, or hit around stuff, or over stuff, and have a 50-50 chance of success (or hooking it in the drink). I hit my 7 iron, it's great. We don't need to do any punting under the wind, or whatever the heck was with our second punt. Weren't we punting with the wind on that one? Just hit it hard, and hit it high. Do that every time, and it will be fine. We stuck them on their first possession, and should have gotten great starting field position. But they boomed a punt and somehow pinned us back. Why couldn't we do that? Stop teaching 9 different ways to punt. Basics. Just practice one type of punt, the good kind.
13. If we're planning on kicking off to the goal line, our coverage team had better run hard to get down there. I felt like the coverage guys were running at like 60% downfield. So they got good returns. CSU's plan was to kickoff out of the endzone and have us start on the 25. Once our coverage team showed they kind of sucked, why not switch strategies? We still have like a half dozen kickers on scholarship, none of them can kick the ball out of the end zone? Wow.
We'll stop at 13 cause I'm just getting sad again and 13 is unlucky enough (I didn't even mention our complete inability to run the damn ball). All that said, I'll still be there this weekend. ::sigh:: Maybe I don't learn either.
Let's go Buffs...
