Cain back on the team?

Yung broke the story earlier today on BuffScoop.

Adam just added some new info on Rivals.

Not a done deal, but Cain has been medically cleared. He has not practiced with the team, but he wants to join. It's not even clear whether he'd be a scholarship player or walk-on for this season.

Let's keep this back here until it goes public. I'd guess that Ringo or Thorburn will have an article soon if they are not completely asleep on the job.

yes...from what i heard best case conference play... but more than likely full redshirt

Sweet. Redshirting would probably be the way to go, but it would be pretty damn tempting to put him out there in league play if practice is going well

What a strange situation.. I guess we all expected he would be back, nice to see him settle in so quick.

It'd be real nice to have the added front court depth for conference play, but considering the circumstances, it's best to cut the losses and redshirt.

Interesting if he gave up his scholly. If so... that's a ~$30,000 decision

If he gets the schollie back, what does that do for recruiting next year's class?

We'd have room for 1 more in 2012.

No openings for 2013 unless Dre left for the NBA after his junior year or we banked the last 2012 schollie.

Honestly, not wild about redshirting him. If he can go by conference play, we need to use him. First off, we need the help up front. Secondly, I'd much rather have a frontcourt situation like this in 2012:

Frosh
Soph
Junior
Senior
Wesley Gordon
Josh Scott
Damien Cain
Ben Mills
Shane Harris-Tunks

I raised this point over at Buffscoop, but thanks for putting it in visual format. Would really love to work him into the lineup starting a week or 2 into the season.

If Cain can't play, that means that Mills might have to, which makes the chart look even worse. I realize class balance tends to be overblown a bit, but I really think it's something to take into consideration here.

Plus, there's a reason Cain was a Top 150 recruit -- he can play. We need his toughness and rebounding this season, especially against teams like UCLA that have NBA size up front. If he's not ready, then obviously we need to redshirt him. But if he can play, I think it's worth burning the redshirt for even half a season.

I understand the point, but it's kind of a bad situation, throwing a kid into conference play after missing a month of crucial practices to start his collegiate career just to even out the classes. I'm kind of torn.

Oh, if he's not ready you redshirt him. I think that's a no-brainer. But if the kid is coming along, and is ready, it's not worth saving the redshirt when we could use him this season.

wow that is really interesting. I hope he shows up and plays this year, we can use the help.

Why wait until the conference season? Can't he get some minutes against some OOC teams to bring himself up to game speed ahead of time? That would make the most sense to me. I'm not a big fan of redshirting basketball players in general. The window of opportunity there is too small. Unless there's an injury, I usually favor getting the kids playing time. It's usually not a matter of physical maturity that keeps a kid off the basketball court.

It is also important to realize the basketball players have only gotten in what 12 practices. Seems like it might be possible for him to catch up.

I'm in favor of him playing as soon as he's ready. He's behind the curve in terms of physical conditioning and other work they've done in those 12 practices, but he did work out with the team during the summer, correct? So there should be at least some familiarity and chemistry already established between him and the other players.

I think he could get up to speed by about ooc game 8-10.

This is great news...I was hoping for this, but I wasn't really optimistic about it either. I thought he'd eventually transfer back home, and next season try to catch on at a Cali school.

We need him to now. You play him this season. This isn't football where he has to learn a playbook. You learn general schemes and more importantly get into shape. He has a lot of time to do both. He will be more effective than Mills right now in my opinion - this is based not on what I've witnessed personally, but what I've saw last year of just Mills.

Class balance is also huge.

 great news - awesome way to start my thirties...helps with the hangover/drunkedness

And why would they change their respective MO's now???

Why does he have to get into shape? David Harrison played three years without doing so and was drafted by the League!

I agree with Sackman - Yeah he might not be in tip top shape and sure he has some catching up to do but he can still get some minutes in during the first part of the season. Throw him in for 5 or 6 minutes each game so he can get into shape and get used to the set plays we run and by the time conference play rolls around he will be golden.
