Callahan to RG

In the new BG Brooks article, he mentions that Callahan has moved from right tackle to right guard. Also mentioned is that HCMM has been impressed with Jeromy Irwin. How is that going to shake things up? Munyer to C and Kelley out? Callahan rotated in as he learns the O?

If the season started today, the OL would be:

LT - Irwin
LG - Crabb
C - Kelley
RG - Munyer
RT - Nembot

It sounds like Callahan has been really good, but the coaches see his skill set at guard in this offense and it's damn hard to beat out 5th year seniors. Irwin is supposedly playing great and Nembot has really improved his pass pro.

I'd expect Callahan to be "first man up" if we had an injury and to play a lot of snaps this year. But asking him to unseat returning starters who are 5th year seniors after a week of practice is a lot. If there's disappointment, I guess it's that he doesn't seem to be a natural LT and we didn't get the Irwin-Callahan position battle that most of us expected.

Also heard positive things about Wiefels, Huckins and Kronshage being ready to contribute. I'm not sure whether Wiefels or Huckins is #2 at C now. Both have worked there. I haven't hear Cotner's name mentioned. Maybe he's dinged up or something.

The juice being served on the OL is ridiculous right now. I have been disappointed by them so many years I am afraid of being hopeful, but I can't help it.

I just read an article that Hawaii's DL may be their best unit, so that will be a test, thought I don't think there is much of any hope for the Rainbow Warriors this season.

Speaking of offensive lines here....i'm guessing most if not all of you read the article on sunday. I didn't know that csu had only 1 returning starter to their offensive line. Does anyone know the experience if any behind the guys that left? If none/limited i'm guessing this really bodes well for us against them....atleast hoping it does.

Breaking in 4 new starters. Their offense is predicated on them being able to run the ball, so I see them struggling in the first game.

If I remember correctly they have some experience and they are all upperclassmen. So they may not be as good as last year's squad but the drop off shouldn't be too big.

I do laugh that they bring up that we lost Richardson all the time though. They lost a NFL lineman from their squad but they just gloss over that.

According to something I read in the Coloradoan, this is their top 6 going into camp:

OT Sambrailo - 5th year. Very experienced - 2nd team all-MWC last year.
G/C Zerblis - RS Soph. Saw action in 4 games in 2013 backing up Richberg
G/C Bennett - RS Frosh, no experience
G/C Myers - a 5th year SR, has seen some time, played in 6 games last year including the 1H vs. Boise State
OT Finley - JC transfer, came in past January
OT Hathaway - 5th year senior, played in 11 games last year and in 2011.

Good experience at tackle and a lot of question marks up the middle....

So their strengths play to our weaknesses, and vice-versa.

Should make for an interesting game if their RB's have enough speed to attack the edges. I'm not convinced they do.

Hmm and the strength of our defensive line is at our tackles. Could make for a hectic day in CSU's backfield

They had one of their best running backs ever and a great OL last year and Kapri Pants couldn't break 100 yards.

On our side, we throw at them

LT - Irwin, RS-So who played some 75 snaps at LG as a true freshman and sat out last year with foot surgery.
LG - Crabb, 5th year SR, started all year in 2013 and brings a lot of experience.
C - Kelley, RS-So, played 97 snaps in 2013 mostly at guard.
RG - Munyer, 5th year SR, tons of experience, having started 27 games (missing parts of his freshman year with an ankle).
RT - Nembot, RS JR, started all 12 games in 2013 and played in 10 games in 2012.

others:
Callahan - RS SO, played sparingly in 2013 as a RS-SO at Auburn
Mustoe - RS JR, played sparingly the last 2 years, breaking his leg in game 6 in 2013.
Weifels - JC transfer, started 2 years at JC.

I'd say their interior DL may be a bigger question mark - but I've been fooled by that before.

Some good stuff in here. They lose 3/4 on the D-line, their best lb in Barrett. They were really pretty good at stopping the run lost year, and utter garbage against the pass.

Their big loss was at center. Tupou is going to be a beast in the opener.

With CSEwe losing so much of their team from last year, and we continue to improve and keep most of our guys, I don't see how we lose to CSEwe. I'm guessing the score will be close to what it was last year...42-27.

Not saying P-Rich wasn't the man in that game, but the Lambs did have some bad coverage break downs.

That was my thought last year, until PRich did the same thing to Pac-12 defenses. He was our entire offense--they only had one dude to cover!

Yeah. P-Rich was awesome. But I think any of our WRs would have scored on either of those 2 long TDs. Certainly on the 1st one.

But CSU likes to talk about a couple coverage breakdown errors on defense but don't acknowledge that CU could use the same excuse for its special teams coverage breakdowns in that game. It's a wash.

This is CSU's entire roster listing for DL

Of the big guys Hansen has played very little, mostly goal line according to their media guide. Foster played 4 games, limited duty after being a DE in JC, Jackson had a big game against us last year with 6 tackles, ended up with 29 for the season. King played in all games last year ended up with 11 tackles. Schupp was a special teamer last year. Kowalok has only started one game but looks to be the guy with the most playing experience of the bunch.

In other words their DL looks to be short on big guys and very inexperienced. I don't see anyone there who looks to be a major worry going against our rebuilt OL.

Kawulok is a nice player.

He should be their highest impact D lineman and from appearances the guy we should be most concerned about.

At the same time he hasn't been able to break into the starting lineup for a middle level MWC team until now. If we can't handle him this game then it's Embree all over again because we are going to have huge problems with guys in the PAC who are much more talented than he is.

I'm not trying to dismiss their DL but it looks to be a step down from last years. I also don't see the dynamic force there that has to be dealt with like Barrett was.

It won't be a walk over but we should have a solid advantage in matching our OL and their DL.

On paper, this game is a blowout win for CU. We're stronger at nearly every position. Turnovers, special teams gaffes, and blown assignments can make a superior team look bad, though. Games aren't won on paper. That's where having a guy like MM running things on the sideline really helps. I would be surprised if this isn't a double digit win for the Buffs.

I think you are spot on.

Take away the emotion for CSU and this game should be 21+ point win but we know that they are going to give it everything they have and keep it closer than it should be.

We have lost 3 games to them in the past 11 times we played, combined total margin of difference I believe without looking it up is about 15 points. Each of those three losses can be directly tied to coaching deficiencies, not to any kind of superior talent on the part of the Rams.

I think you are selling them short at DL. Jackson is now a seasoned vet. He got dinged up a bit last year, but he was a force in their bowl game vs. WSU.
Kawulok is good enough to play for a lot of PAC12 programs. He's solid, if not spectacular.
Foster was moved from TE to DE late in the year and played there thru the bowl game. Should be solid this year.
King played a lot last year.

They certainly return at least as much experience as we do, and definitely more at DE. While I think they lost more than we did, and I don't think they will be PAC12 level, they will be up for their Super Bowl and they return quite a few snaps of guys who played against WSU in their bowl game.

They should be a better Defensive team this year overall. But we should be also.

The whole "they get up for the Super Bowl" line is a bit played out. CSU is a rival to our players as well, it's not a one way street anymore

If the Buffs shore up the special teams play in this years game, I see CU winning by 10-20 points. Last year was a disaster on kickoffs and punts, a lot of which had to do with poor coverage and poor tackling. That was really the only thing that kept the sheep in contention late before we blew them out at the end.

So far I have seen an improvement on CU's side in some very key areas, while CSU (on paper) has lost quite a bit. I know P Rich played a big part, but our current stable of WR's *should* be able to handle a mediocre MWC backfield.

I'm sure Grayson will have a big impact, but with maybe our best backfield in quite a while CSU better hope to get some production out of their RB's if they look to have a chance. I expect Gillam and Tupuo to have a field day.

We've got plenty of fast guys for special teams. I want to see them surprised at how fast our coverage teams are.
