We suck, we were going to suck coming into this year, Embree's one good class was overrated because we over signed, hawk's last classes weren't good. What we lacked in depth we made up for in slow coming into the season. Our roster issues weren't magically going to be "coached up" we have a long way to go.

The lay off hurt us, the state of the roster has hurt us, and we have a long way to go. Step back from the ledge, and punch yourself in the face if you thought a coaching change was moving us from the worst BCS power conference squad into a team who was bowling.

This is going to be hard, we should be prepared for a long hard slog.

And OSU is still probably a 8-4 team this year. Admittedly, I haven't watched the game yet (was working and I need the money bad) and admittedly I did not think OSU was a very good team after their early stumbles but it looks like they're starting to figure things out and are more like the 2012 OSU rather than the OSU team that showed up against EWU and SDSU (although that was a road game for them). This was also a road game and we've been **** on the road since the start of the 2006 season so that doesn't help.

4-8 is still a very realistic goal (I'm assuming we are going to schedule a patsy), even 5-7 and that's about where most thought our record would be this year.

Not the reason we lost but Wood is from Texas. I wonder if he ever played a game in weather with the combination of wind, wet, and temperature. He looked very uncomfortable throwing the ball to say the least.

Wow, man. You should watch the game. We were completely outclassed at every single position on the field today, in a game we all expected to at least be competitive in. I did not expect us to win, I predicted us losing by 14. But we essentially scored 3 points today when they had their starters in and weren't laying back, and that 3 was off an INT that set us up deep in their territory. I don't see us beating anybody on our schedule besides a makeup FCS team (better be a patsy too). Cal's improving, AZ hung until late with UW today, UT is much improved and USC is stacked but undercoached. I just don't see it.

You almost always get at least one game a year in conference where somebody lays an egg. Last year it was Wash State. That said I think 3 wins would be a major step forward after last year.

Football games have a tendency to go like this. They had a succesful fourth down play before the half when we could have gone into half only down 1 TD. We came out of half down big and passed the ball way too much, getting out of a good balanced offensive attack we were having with Adkins. Our offense was lulzy obviously but I was mostly impressed with our defense. They were left giving Mannion too many chances because of our dumb penalties and turnovers. Compared to last year, I felt like we were competitive against a good, veteran offense. I'm very excited for the direction of this team. Football takes time to improve, it's not like basketball where 1-2 guys is all you need.

Oregon State was the better team, but it really looked like a team playing their first game after a looooong period of time off, vs. a team that had some semblance of momentum. I think the layoff really hurt this team. Very unfortunate in terms of building some momentum.

It will be impossible to see any improvement next week while we are busy getting our asses handed to us, but I think as the team gets to return to a weekly routine, you will see some improvement in continuity, and may even see some momentum being built, despite the coming string of losses.

Umm we're not going 0-9 in the Pac 12

Three meaningful points against a really bad defense. EB would have been proud.

Being more serious, we still play and recruit against the PAC-12. Rolling over in most/all conference games can't happen. That's not progress. You want to harp on talent? Games like today don't exactly help.

You are right about this. We can make some progress though by at least looking like a major college team. Last years team looked completely lost and hopeless. If we can at least look like we are trying and getting better we will have something to sell.

I'm not sure if this helps, but I listened to Mac's post game interview. I, very much, liked his demeanor. He was pissed but controlled. I just feel like he knows what needs to be done.

I only saw the first half. Had to attend the Monsoon at Montlake. Aka washington vs Arizona. But god that first half was so close to going completely differently. Should have gotten 7 of the pick early. Got some good 3 and outs. The DD Goodson catch or non catch that would have helped kill the half keeping it close. So frustrating. Still keeping the faith. Mac knows what he's doing. Finally drying out from that game in Seattle.

Well on the radio, they kept saying speed and we were outclassed there. Also Mac wasn't too happy with the oline coach, said he was chewing him out pretty good. I know it was a difficult situation but no excuses, show up and play.

Never drink the Koolaid. Even when it looks ok. Never.

I agree with all of your post. I believe in these coaches. We will get a few wins this year on clever coaching and smart play. But we are not back by any means given the above. It is what it is.

i thought coach Mac's post game was terrific. The guy wanted to punch out Ringo, Henderson, and all the other ass clowns who were asking questions. But he kept it under control, albeit with a biting sense of humor.

This will take time. Hunker down for the long haul, bitches.

I agree. I think we can win three, maybe four, higest is five now. But you know what? I will take that. They didn't quit, they played hard. Yep. Didn't have the speed some places. Didn't make the plays some places. Didn't get comfortable in the up tempo until it was too late. I had said coming in to the season that the dream was six wins, but reality was probably 3 to 5. That is still the case. As long as they keep fighting, keep getting better, then I am happy. OSU was a sure loss in my mind coming into the season (after the top 25 ranking) and I was hoping that the stumbles would mean that we had a good chance. It was not to be. So we don't win 6 and go bowling? That's too bad, but still......I can see (outside of Wood and PRich) a very obvious talent difference between MM's recruits and who we had last year. Adkins (rb) looks like he is going to be the real deal. Awuzie looks like the real deal. 44 is the real deal. Now the coaches need to get the OL they want and get everyone to grow. We can bowl next year. We can start making noise in the PAC 12 S in two to three years. This won't take forever, but it will take time. At least the team is competitive somewhat compared to years past. Yep, will get killed a few times. UO, UW and ASU will probably mudhole us. But I hope to see the kids fighting through the whole game. That will mean a lot. And I look forward to them winning a game that we don't expect.

I couldn't agree more with the sentiment of this tread. We have lost one freaking game, in bad weather conditions, after a long layoff, and our QB had a bad game. And yet some act as if the sky is falling. I am reminded of the line from Sam Axe on Burn Notice: "You know spies, bunch of b**chy little girls," where you can substitute the word "spies" for "some buff fans" and it works as well as the original, maybe even better.

This rebuilding is going to be a marathon, not a sprint. You don't go from winning 1 game to 5-6-7 wins. They need better recruits, more experience and more speed. But I think we have much better coaches now and I like MikeMac, I think he has the right attitude. When a program is in this state you have to constantly look forward and not look back. Looking back and getting depressed/angry does nothing to help you rebuild the program.

Love the thread title. This is a good team, not PAC12 quality yet but soon. We will a couple more games and be competitive in many. We may even cover the spread against Oregon...what is it?? 45? :)

Keep the faith and some Buff fans need to up their dosage!!!

Explain why our QB had a bad game?

Good fan version. It might it be his horoscope was off. Maybe he has a big exam on Monday or thoughts of a girl is in his head. It's probably something trivial. This was just a rare anomaly because certainly Connor is an elite P12 QB who is normally consistent and should get back to many more 300+ yard passing games in October and November. P-Rich will be pulling down 200+ yards against any conference rival.

Bad fan version: The o-line didn't give enough pass protection for Connor to check down and he gets inaccurate with pressure. The balls float way in front, get tipped, are thrown at the feet, giving the receivers little chance to run after the catch. The QB and RB were not on the same page, because routes that were run were not routes that were designed. And the OC wasn't calling bubble screens, slants and short routes to exploit the blitz. The weather was obviously just an excuse because OSU's QB miraculously set a school record with over 400 yards and 6 TDs.

Didn't Sark do that after their 0-12 season?
