CFP Thread: Oregon vs Ohio State

I really wanted to see Bama FSU. I guess I'll pull for the poultry since the are P12.

I was pretty happy to see the annihilation of the cream of the SEC with the losses by bama and the 2 miss. teams. Not that ESPN is going to do anything but make money since they pretty much own college football (and now the NFL too???).

I'd argue that despite being highly ranked this season, the Mississippi teams hardly constitute the cream of the SEC. You need to throw LSU and Auburn on that list too--not that it really matters since they lost too.

But to keep it on topic, I have no idea what's going to happen in this game, but I'll be rooting for the conference. OSU looked good v. Bama, though.

I have to root for Oregon because they are in our conference and I am still mad that OSU didn't punished for lunchgate

They did, but doggone it, the NCAA submitted the sanctions one day late. They really, really meant to hold OSU accountable, and if it wasn't for that darn clerical misstep... They'll get them next time (odd, considering, there's been three or four "next times" since lunchgate)! Really!

Despite how insufferable Duck fan will be, I can't bring myself to root for tOSU.

Just glad FSU got exposed. I think this is going to be a fun game. Most intriguing since the Texas-USC Rose Bowl IMO. In the end, I think Oregon will capitalize on mistakes by Jones and win a high-scoring game.

They should have 3rd place matchup. Imagine the ratings!

I'm concerned that Oregon's penchant for stupid football finally bites them in the ass. Going for two in the first quarter, going for it on fourth down almost all the time, etc. that kind of stuff is what makes them who they are, but it's also really stupid. A team like OSU can expose that stuff. If they can play smart football, I like their chances. They just don't seem to play smart football.

Oregon converts 2 point conversions at a 57% clip, so they average 1.14 points after per touchdown. They have also only gone for it 7 times all year. Their opponents average 25%.

Oregon has achieved a 65% conversion rate of 26 4th down attempts vs. their opponents averaging 44% of 36 attempts.

This is smart when you know how to play it

Should root for o because they are in our conference, blah, blah, blah... Don't care for either team, truly are both cheaters and the ncaa lets them.
I am just going to watch what should be a really good game, not truly caring about who wins. I am just jealous that CU is nowhere close to being in the mix.

Oregon hasn't been playing Ohio State all year. Great teams make you pay for pulling stunts like that.

Maybe. But we also heard how Oregon's offense would be exposed by the great athletes of FSU in the playoff. If anything--even with Marriota playing kinda poorly by his standard--FSU was unable to slow down the Oregon offense at all. Okay, an uncharacteristic (non-forced) interception. But aside from that, I don't think we saw a punt until the scrubs were in at the end of the fourth quarter.

I think that OSU is much better than FSU, but I'm not sure they can consistently stuff Oregon's offense.

Oregon doesn't seem to just go for two all the time though. They line up and if they see a mismatch they try and take advantage if there is no mismatch they lineup and kick a field goal.

7 times all year - far from "going for it all the time".

I am picking Oregon. They beat both MSU and FSU, plus PAC > B1G and Mariota is playing at a high level. My concerns would be if OSU gets their run game going. Hope it is a close game to the end.

They line up for the two point conversion after the first score of every game I've seen them play. They don't always actually go for it, but they always line up like they're going to.

It's annoying as Hell. Makes me want to stab a puppy every time I see them do it. It's arrogant, stupid football. They get away with it because they're playing teams like CU (who, IIRC actually stopped them when they tried it this year). Ohio State is a different animal.

Ill be rooting for Oregon but I have a feeling Blowhio St. will win. I don't know why.

I'll root for Oregon too (Pac 12), but I think Meyer >>> Helfrich at coaching. The question is whether he has enough time to figure out how to beat the O offense and teach his defense what to do. Has OSU faced a fast paced pac 12 like team this year?

There's fast paced, and then there's Oregon. Unless you've faced Oregon, you haven't faced a team like Oregon.

FSU has athletes and the loss of 1 point on the first TD didn't seem to affect them much.

Exactly.

Watching them against FSU, the difference was incredible. Even with the caliber of athlete FSU has, they weren't even close in the speed department. They are a normal hurry up squad, like most of college football, until they get a first down. When they are able to hit the gas it is really incredible to watch.

I don't see a problem with lining up in a different alignment, looking for a mismatch, and then shifting to a traditional PAT alignment.

In the Rose Bowl, FSU made a mistake in their defensive alignment. They had 5 defending 4 on the right side of the field, and 3 defending 4 on the left. So Oregon made the audible, took advantage, and stole a point. Don't see what's stupid about that.

I don't really have a handle on this game.

Consider: we really didn't know much about tOSU going into the game. They had improved immensely over the year, but were playing a 3rd string QB.

Bama looked like the dominant team in the nation at the end of the season, but every team that they beat to make them look that dominant was beaten in their bowl games, a couple of them being embarrassed.

tOSU pushed Bama around, but again, it's hard to know who Bama really was.

Oregon of course ran circles around FSU's 'superior' athletes, and they looked like the better team, but you really can't just set the Semenholes' 3rd quarter meltdown aside and pretend that it was all due to Oregon.

So, when I look at it, I see a team in Oregon that looked great on Jan 1, but maybe are not as great as it seems at first glance, and a team in tOSU that looked pretty darn good as well, but are maybe not as good as it seems, either. Or one team is as good as advertised and the other isn't.

I don't know. The only feeling that I have, despite my anathema towards anything Buckeye or Urban Meyer, it just doesn't seem smart to ever bet against Urb.

You cannot pretend the 3rd quarter meltdown by FSU was all Oregon, but it was not a fluke either. The two teams have been opposites in turnover margin all season and it came to a head in the Rose Bowl.

FSU was living a lie all season. Perfect example of how the playoff should work.
