I'll be putting more info in this thread as the Championships close in, but wanted to start it now as it was announced yesterday that the Buffs were selected to bring a full team (12 skiers) to the Championships!

I'm hoping and assuming that, as in prior years, live streaming of all races will be available on the NCAA website. (Link provided below.)

PARK CITY & MIDWAY, Utah—The Colorado Buffaloes Ski Team had made it to Utah and is ready to compete for the program's 21st and school's 30th National Championship, which take place here at Park City Resort and Soldier Hollow Resort Wednesday through Saturday.

Coach Andy LeRoy and Nordic coach Jana Weinberger have put together a 12-skier team that include an Olympian in each team within the bigger team. Filip Forejtek (men's alpine) and Magnus Boee (men's Nordic) both 2018 Olympians, are joined by Magdalena Luczak (women's alpine) and Weronika Kaleta (women's Nordic) who both competed in Beijing last month.

The 69th NCAA Championships kick off Wednesday and will be available via a live stream by the NCAA and live timing with live team scoring on the RMISA website. Action gets underway Wednesday with GS races. A full schedule (times subject to change due to weather or other factors):

  • Wednesday, 9 AM – Women's GS First Run
  • Wednesday, 10:15 AM – Men's GS First Run
  • Wednesday, 12:45 PM – Women's GS Second Run
  • Wednesday, 2 PM – Men's GS Second Run

FOREJTEK WINS SECOND STRAIGHT MVP
Forejtek was named the MVP of the RMISA for Men's GS in 2022, defending the award he picked up in 2021. This is the second season the RMISA has split MVPs down to the discipline level and given out eight awards as opposed to four, and Forejtek's is the Buffs fourth. Along with his GS win in 2021, Boee also won both MVPs last season.

NINE BUFFS EARN ALL-RMISA HONORS
Nine Buffs were named to the All-RMISA first, second or honorable mention teams, including three picking up first-team honors as the awards were released recently by the league. Abrahamsson, Boee and Forejtek all picked up first team honors as one of the top five skiers in the RMISA. Those picking up second team honors were Dilling, Karolina Kaleta, Koch and honorable mention honorees were Dietze, Hammergaard and Fausa. The honorable mention honor is new this season for the RMISA and encompasses all skiers in the top 10 in either discipline throughout the season that didn't make the first or second team, ensuring skiers that finish in the top 10 of either discipline earn the award and making it more consistent season to season.

FOUR BUFFS EARN SKIER OF THE MEET HONORS
Throughout the season, four Buffs earned RMISA Skier of the Meet awards as the top skier over the two races within a meet. Skiers can only win once a season. Abrahamsson (UAF Invite), Boee (RMISA Invite), Forejtek (Utah Invite) and Dilling (DU Invite) were the four Buffs honored.

I know it’s expensive and a pain in the ass, but I would love it if these championships could be televised. The P12 has two marquee teams competing. Feels like a good fit for the P12 network.

Assume Utah must have gotten at least the same snow Colorado did (only a little earlier?).

Looks like today's races are now part of a BUSY Thursday.

Looks like the start of the women's giant slalom (at least for streaming purposes) is showing at 9:30 rather than the 9:00 showing in the schedule.

Solid start on the scoring-side, with the women's Nordic team earning a tight 2nd place (only 2 points separate 2nd-4th). (As has been the case all season, the Utes women team with a dominant performance, and they lead by ~40 points after the 1st of 8th scoring events.)

Note- I'm going to be on the road until this evening, and probably won't be able to update this thread until then,

It was a very solid 1st day for the Buffs, with them sitting in 2nd halfway through the Championships, featuring TWO NCAA Individual Champions in the giant slalom!.

Overall, I'd have to think this may be one of the closer Championships at the halfway point I can remember in recent history, with CU only 24.5 points behind the Utes, while the Buffs only have 13 and 27 point advantages over 3rd place DU and 4th place Vermont, respectively.

The Alpine team is scheduled to end their portion of the NCAA's today, with slalom race 1st runs scheduled to begin at 9:30 AM.

PARK CITY & SOLDIER HOLLOW, Utah—Magdalena Luczak and Filip Forejtek became the first CU skiers to sweep both GS races, each winning an Individual National Championship to lead the Colorado Buffaloes Ski Team into second place at the midpoint of the 2022 NCAA Ski Championships here Thursday.

Originally scheduled for Wednesday, the giant slalom races were moved to Thursday along with the classic races on the Nordic side as half the championship was contested. In Nordic action, the Buffs were led by Magnus Boee in third place in the 10K classic race and Hanna Abrahamsson in fifth place in the women's 5K classic. All four skiers earned first-team All-America honors.

In the team standings, the top is a lot close than most expected as the Buffs are just 24.5 points behind host Utah, who leads with 286.5 points. CU is second with 262, 13 ahead of third place Denver (249) with Vermont also in the mix with 235 points. Those four are still in the hunt for the team championship and hold more than a 100 point advantage over the next team in the standings, which is Middlebury with 131.5 points.

Luczak won the program's 101st individual NCAA Championship and 99th NCAA Individual Championship and Forejtek then brought home the 102nd overall and 100th NCAA. Both numbers lead the nation. Along with Boee and Abrahamsson, Will Koch and Weronika Kaleta picked up second-team All-America honors with seventh and 10th place performances, respectively, in the men's and women's Nordic races.

Utah performed as expected in the women's classic race, picking up three of the top six finishers en route to 106.5 points. Abrahamsson was able to beat the third Utah skier and after Kaleta's 10th place finish was Anna-Maria Dietze in 14th. On the men's side, the Utes struggled to just 46 points and the Buffs put up 76 points with all three Buffs performing well. Koch was put into the race's second seed and one of two from that seed to finish in the top 10. Nilsen had a similar performance, as the final seed out of the RMISA and first out on course, he finished 16th and was one of just two skiers to finish in the top 20 from the lowest seeded skiers.

"Overall we had a good, solid day today," Nordic coach Jana Weinberger said. "Magnus got on the podium, Will got a top 10 and Fredrik finished 16th after going out first. Hanna had a great race, Weronika performed well after not skiing in college for almost two months, and Anna-Maria also did well."

At the end of the Nordic races, the Buffs were within 7.5 points of Utah. With Luczak and Forejtek both winning, the Buffs had the opportunity for the lead at the midpoint but ran into a little bad luck. Louis Fausa, who started the first run in 17th and threw down the fifth fastest run, had his binding release on the second run and didn't finish. Had he finished and maintained a top five finish, the Buffs would've had the lead. Freshman Jacob Dilling had a little mishap on his first run but then had the third-fastest second run to finish 12, just a quarter second out of All-America status.

In the women's race, Luczak had the fastest time in both of her runs, especially impressive given the fact she started the race 29th out of 34 skiers. In the end, she won by an impressive 1.25 seconds. Emma Hammergaard finished 15th and Kaitlyn Harsch 25th for the women's team.

"Aside from one misstep with a binding that pre-released, we performed well today," CU coach Andy LeRoy said. "Other than that we were the strongest team on the hill today, and it showed with the to national champions that we had, and the rest of the team skied great, as well. We're excited for the slalom tomorrow and to see the Nordies finish it off on Saturday."

WHAT IT MEANS: To most on-lookers, the teams were racing for second place here with the strength of the hometown Utes. And while Utah performed well today and leads at the midpoint, there are four teams within striking distance and the Buffs are the lead threat chasing down the Utes. Former coach Richard Rokos calls the slalom races the "great equalizer," which means just about anything can happen Friday. If the Buffs are in a close race, they have performed better in freestyle this season should it come down to the final day.

UP NEXT: The alpine teams ski for the second straight day with the slalom races at Park City Mountain Resort starting at 9:30 a.m. Friday. A live steam will be available at the NCAA's website and live timing and team scoring is available at the RMISA website. Saturday's 15K women's and 20K men's freestyle races will close out the Championships and the season.

Looks like the men had a ROUGH race. (Wonder if their were wax issues??? OR ???) The top Buff finisher, 2 time defending NCAA individual champion Boe, only comes in 17th. I'd guess this may be the least points from a NCAA Championships race by the CU men's Nordic side in a LONG time. (They end up showing 9th with only 22 points today after being in a tie for 3rd with 74 points (only 2 from the leaders) in Thursday's race.)

I'd say, pending a major blow up by DU, the CU women have very little chance to even get the Buffs close to finishing 3rd overall. (The Buffs are now showing 33.5 points behind 3rd place DU.) Hopefully the Buffs can still have some nice individual efforts in the final race to earn an All-American honor or two.

Edit- Did look, and in Thursday's shorter women's Nordic race, the Buffs did outscore the Pioneers by 26 points, so maybe (???) there's still some chance for an overall 3rd place finish if things go VERY well for the Buffs and/ or DU has issues.

The Buffs finished a VERY close 4th, 1-1/2 points behind DU. (As I guessed above (although my detail guess of wax issues was way off), a couple of the men had issues (illness and in-race crash) that hurt their results.)

MIDWAY, Utah—The Colorado Buffaloes ski team closed out the 2022 season Saturday and finished the NCAA Ski Championships in fourth place after a rough day of skiing here at Soldier Hollow.

Entering the day in fourth, the Nordic teams swung for the fences, not looking to move up one or two spots but aiming for a national championship. Sometimes when you swing for the fences, you miss, and that's essentially what happened to the Buffs Saturday.

The men's team of Magnus Boee, Will Koch and Fredrik Nilsen were among the best teams, and at the lap check points, Boee was fourth after the first lap, Koch was third after the second lap and Nilsen was in 11th at the midpoint of the race. Boee was feeling ill (he tested negative for COVID) and Nilsen was involved in an unfortunate situation where a skier next to him broke his pole and was reaching for a new one from his coach and the two collided, and he took a knee to the head.
In the end, Boee finished 17th, Koch 23rd and Nilsen 35th and out of scoring position. The Buffs as a team scored 22 points, but had they held their top positions would've scored 85 points and won the race.

The women's team was led by freshman Hanna Abrahamsson who finished seventh and picked up her second All-America honor in as many days. Junior Anna-Maria Dietze finished 20th and sophomore Weronika Kaleta 22nd for the Buffaloes.

"I'm disappointed by the overall placement, but absolutely encouraged ty the athletes and how they've gone about it, how they've grown and where the program is headed." CU coach Andy LeRoy said. "For sure it stings a little bit to hoist the fourth-place trophy on our way out of town."

Utah ended up winning the championship with 578 points, scoring 100 points in the women's race on the strength of a 1-2 finish from Sophia Laukli and Novie McCabe. Vermont finished second with 511.5 points and in the end, Denver edged the Buffs by just 1.5 points, 436.5-435.

"Having seen enough NCAA championships in my time you hope for good performances, you prepare the athletes for those performances, but when it turns out the way it did today, it's just part of the sport," LeRoy said. "We had some things happen this week, Louie Fausa's ski falls off, the first time all season something like that happened, Fredrik collides with another skier, Magnus was sick. Things like that happen and they're part of our sport, unfortunately they do affect the results and as much as you prepare to try and shield your athletes from this type of thing, it happens."

WHAT IT MEANS: The Buffs ski to win national championships, so anything less on some level is a disappointment. But you can't be disappointed with the effort the 2022 team put forth. You have to take the chances when they come, and if you fall short giving 100 percent, that's just something that happens in ski racing. The bottom line is the Buffs showed improvement throughout the season and from all accounts, the program is going in the right direction.

UP NEXT: The 2022 season is now complete. For some, off season training begins immediately. For others, there are still some non-collegiate races left as we get into late March and early April.

NCAA CHAMPIONSHIP TEAM SCORES: 1. Utah 578; 2. Vermont 511.5; 3. Denver 436.5; 4. Colorado 435; 5. Alaska Anchorage 269; 6. New Hampshire 241; 7. Alaska Fairbanks 239; 8. Westminster 231; 9. Montana State 213; 10. Middlebury 209.5; 11. Dartmouth 142; 12. Michigan Tech 141; 13. St. Michael's 108.5; 14. Northern Michigan 64; 15. Colby 56; 16. Bowdoin, 28; 17. St. Lawrence 26; 18.
