Cheap Ass Alums....we need to step it up...but help us Benson etal

Ok. Here is my story... I graduated in the late 80s. I bleed BnG. But here is a confession....I give very little cash to CU, even though I could make a significant contribution. My rationale is that I don't want to give a penny until I know that the university wants to commit to developing a national championship caliber football program. I have seen no signs of a commitment from CU (Benson, Destuffadoosh, etc) to make it happen.

Therein lies the problem....a real catch22. I have several friends who are alums in the same boat. And by the way, our dumb ass friends from Austin were in the same boat in the mid 90s. We are no comparison to UT in terms of resources, but give us half of what UT is doing, and I am happy. Don't we have 240K of potential donors?

Just give me a sign that we want a winning program and improved facilities, and my checkbook will open...as will several others.

Yep. Show some sort of plan and desire to be what we were in the early 90s.

I think you hit the nail on the head neighbor..... Show us that having a ongoing successful program is important (doesn't have to be to the exclusion of academics like a lot of academic hippies think) and the alumni will come out of the woodwork.

I think Bohn sees the light, its a matter of the other Regents supporting success. I graduated in 91, the year we won it all. We were at the top, and sometime i wonder if it was an accident/aboration? I moved away from Boulder after 92 and i honestly wonder how we threw all that momentum away (slowly).

This message needs to be communicated to the people who can make sure that Benson, et al. will at least have a chance to see it. Simple reality is that money talks. I am not in a position to be a significant donor but I know that there are plenty out there who are and would donate if as you state they had some confidence it would go where they want it to go, towards a commitment to winning.

I wonder if a forum could be set up for people like you to "sign up" to be included in a group message, with a significant dollar figure attached to get the attention of those in power.

It also may be more effective if that group message were to be carried forward by someone who is known in the administration and is already a significant donor. I'm sure that one of those could be found as well who would be willing to present the message and who has access to insure it get heard.

I'm just kind of thinking out loud here but it is obvious that significant resources are out there that are not being donated by individuals like yourself. Combining a number of these individuals together may make the message even more powerful.

Never going to happen without some momentum in the program. Winning, even a little gets the ball rolling on stuff like this.

Making it more difficult for the average person to be involved with the program isn't helping either. What time does that UCLA game start? They still haven't announced a time for a game that I have tickets to. I have some work business that I will need to take care of that day and the longer it takes for them to decide, the less likely I will be able to even make it up there. Blame it on the conference again!

TV dictates most gametimes, usually 2 weeks in advance sometimes 1 week

Yes... been hearing that ever since the Big12 started up. I guess they think everyone has the entire day to spend on a game. Lots of other things are going on during Saturdays in the fall especially if you have a career and kids. I guess for some of the more high rollers, this may be why they view the games as an afterthought. If I can make it, I will... If not, oh well.

My only hope, is that if we start winning, then maybe we will get more late games... I have a feeling they will see attendance go up if the games start more around 4pm than between 11 and 2.

maybe someone with means needs to offer some money contingent on seeing the plans

maybe its time a group of people contact them and say that... show us what you plan on doing

Donors have been saying this to CU for years. I don't blame the major donors from staying away.

The biggest problem is the extreme lack of programs and communication to minor donors. You need to get people involved and interested if you want them to open their wallet. Big donors come to the table when they see all levels giving and a clear plan for the cash.

You are correct here.

Also I may be completely wrong but am willing to bet that most big donors started as small dononrs. The amount of money that can be generated from a large number of smaller donors is not insignificant on it's own but handled in the proper manner at least some of those small donors can be cultivated into big donors over time as they and their families grow more successful financially.

So I had a thought. If we all donate through Allbuffs, will that move our seats closer until our seats are on the 50 used line? Win-win if so.

Same problem.....I refuse to give anything additional until I am convinced they are committed

So what are you guys waiting for now? They have the plans laid out in the BDC about what they want to do for facilities but they need donors to make it happen.

Not sure we read the same articles. I saw plans, I saw some pleas for more donations, but mostly I saw half-assed statements about what they want to do sometime in the future.

We can buy more expensive seats if we want to. Nothing is standing in our way.

Exactly the problem....Give me a solid plan or options with a timetable that can be committed to that doesn't involve "in the future" and I'm willing to jump along with others....unfortunately like most of the rest of us I don't have faith in DiStefino and many times Bohn to take any $$ I would give them now and do what is needed with it immediately

This is one of the problems Bohn has with this current group. He can't get them onboard. He cannot get them to provide him with a firm commitment as to what to build and more importantly; what portion of the funding has to be obtained through donations. How is Bohn to provide a vision for donors when he cannot get a firm commitment to the project and its associated dollars? Read between the lines! Bohn's last interview spoke of the "fluidity of the process" which in the financing world means they cannot agree on ther total project to be built and the portion that the school with finance and what portion will come from private donations.

Difficult to sell something when the project parametyers are not known and identified. Ultimately the problem rests at the top. If we had a Hank Brown type at the head of the university, this project would get going and I think everybody would be surprised at the level of donations. Mired with the leadership of Benson and DiStephano, I have my doubts.

I have said it before, so sorry about sounding like a broken record. Texas was down in the mid 90s. Their football program was sucking wind. Dodds (their AD) developed a plan to turn things around, and he did it in a big way.

Obviously, CU is not UT. However, what Dodds did was to motivate the alums (even the small donors) to start to contribute. I would love to see the numbers on their alumni donations from 1990 to the present. I would guess a tripling (even after adjusting for inflation).

I recall emailing Bohn when Danny doosh noggin started. I suggested to Bohn that he copy the Texas model. He said that was his exact plan. Perhaps he is waiting for the perfect moment to implement.

It's time for a breath of fresh air within the AD, chancellor and President. Based on my impressions, Bohn has exhausted all his political capital and the donors don't trust him much anymore.

Well we could pay more for game tickets look at this list of 25.

This thread makes me want to drop my tickets and end my donation, it is so inspiring. I always found in fund raising that calling the potential donors cheap is a sure fire way to get them to donate - LESS!!!

Really? I thought that people gave more money to beggars that insulted them. :wink2:
