As always, CL34 does some good work here. Everyone owes him a beer if they ever meet him.
As poorly as CU preformed on offense for the balance of the 2nd quarter, they finished with a touchdown off of an Arizona muffed punt and then stormed out of half time for another touchdowns to take the lead 24-17. The defense mustered another stand and for the first time, since probably 2010 CU looked to put a respectable team away in the second half.
Quarter 3 Drive 2
Recap
1-10 Colo 20 Liufau, Sefo pass complete to Spruce, Nelson for 7 yards to the COLO27 (Denson, C.).
2-3 Colo 27 Carr, Patrick rush for 10 yards to the COLO37, 1ST DOWN COLO (Parks, W.).
Colorado starts off like many before by competing a pass to Nelson Spruce to get ahead of the chains. Patrick Carr then breaks off one of his better runs of the game for first down and then some.
Series: 2 Play: 1
Down: 1 Distance: 10
Formation: Shotgun Personnel: 11
Defensive Personnel: 3-3-5
CU aligns is a base personnel grouping with Carr at RB, Irwin at TE, and Fields, Spruce, and Bobo in at WR. Zona has also settled into their game plan at this point, showing six rushers potentially coming. The coverage appears to be man to man on the WRs with a safety high.
BL dials up a post with Fields. Fields feints inside and then tries to sell an outside move but the DB doesn't bite and turn his hips. Fields breaks back inside on the post but the throw is a bit off of the mark. Elsewhere the protection is solid. Spruce broke open the slant to the other side of the field.
Series: 2 Play: 2
Down: 2 Distance: 10
Formation: Shotgun Personnel: 11
Defensive Personnel: 3-3-5
CU aligns in the same formation as above and Zona matches. Defense appears to be man to man with a two deep safety look. Zona has walked one backer up to the LOS providing a 4 man front appearance.
The CU runs a trap here, notice Huckins pull from his right guard position. Everyone does their job well here except for Kough who whiffs his block on one of the backers. Carr this time displays nice patience waiting for the blocks to set up and then squeezes through the hole for a six yard gain.
Series: 2 Play: 3
Down: 3 Distance: 4
Formation: Shotgun Personnel: 11
Defensive Personnel: 3-3-5
CU keep the same personnel again but this time splits Irwin out into the slot to the left side of the formation. Zona again appears be in man to man coverage and shows shows blitz of off the edges with two OLBs.
Irwin false starts here and sets the offense back five yards.
Series: 2 Play: 3
Down: 3 Distance: 4
Formation: Shotgun Personnel: 10
Defensive Personnel: 3-3-5
Buffs align in a shotgun formation with 4 WR, Jay MacIntyre has subbed in for Irwin here. JM motions to the top of the formation pre-snap. Zona shows six rushers again. Coverage is off.
Again the full house comes at the snap, the rush converges on Liufau. This is the play where it appears he hurts his shoulder. Blocks here were missed by the RB and by Kronshage and Huckins, which has sort been in the trend this year with those two. The design of the blitz had put pressured through the A gaps here. This is the same blitz package Hawaii ran against us. Send two up the middle and then have the OLB loop up the A gap late. The OLB does get there late but because the right side had already surrendered heat, Liufau got hit pretty good here.
To his credit, Liufau stands and almost beats the blitz on an out to Fields.

Quarter 3 Drive 3
Lindsay misses hole, should have stayed wide and trusted his blocks.
Jay MacIntyre gets bumped off of his route, cannot make a play on the ball. Here and on the previous third down (Liufau shoulder injury), appears neither fast nor quick against the coverage and cannot get open.
Quarter 3 Drive 4
Bad footwork = bad throw
Lindsay misses cut back in the B-Gap instead presses too wide. Hole was there. Second missed hole by Lindsay in the last two drives.
Nembot surrender pressure to the speed rush. Nembot's first really bad play this game.
