College Coaches Salary Database

I'm surprised Kelly is getting paid a little over a million, when you consider how much money ND brings in every year.

I would love to see what the assistant pools look like.

IMO, that is much more of an indicator of how committed a school is to winning than HC salary.

Mac is #7 in potential bonuses at $1.5M. Safe bet by the admin we aren't going to hit any meaningful milestones this year

Even if we have a good one, we're still limited since only ONE assistant can get a multi-year contract. This policy hampers our ability to get quality assistants IMO.

We have ~$2.5MM salary base for the assistants and I really think the multi-year contract limit is pretty overblown if you have money to pay your staff.

I disagree, if a coach has two job offers, he'll likely take a less money upfront in exchange for more security. So we have to overpay to begin with and that's before even considering our record.

If you have any examples of coaches who selected schools other than CU because they weren't guaranteed a multi-year contract I'd love to see them. Assistant coaches tend to move around a decent amount anyway so I don't see it as much of a detractor. Subpar facilities and lack of administration support would be much, much, much harmful than a state law.

Likewise, do you have any examples of coaches who choose CU over multi-year contracts elsewhere?

No, but I also don't think it's a big deterrent when compared with other factors. There is a quote by NC State coach Dave Dorean though...

“When we get a championship mentality here, I can help this place,” Doeren said. “I felt like that. Had I gone to a Colorado-type place where they really need to start over facility-wise -- you're rebuilding everything there. Here, I don't have to. It just seemed like if I can get kids in-state that want to stay in state, which hasn't happened here, that will be big.”

So when combined with all the other factors, I think lack of multi-year contracts is a pretty small issue.

So ok I agree that we need better infrastructure and support from the administration. But if we ever do get in shape, this is going to be a bigger issue when retaining assistants.

So yeah I see where you are coming from, we're so bad, this doesn't matter; nonetheless, I'd say maybe if we could get more quality assistants that would help with recruiting.

What hell has Coach Food Cart done to justify being the fourth highest paid coach in the country?

Jeff Grimes.

My understanding is Shaw's new deal is in the 2.5 range, so that bumps Mac2 and Kyle down a slot.
Any idea how much Stanford paid Harbaugh? They basically implied they weren't going to break the bank for him. (although I think he would've been gone regardless since SF was as close to a perfect situation as you could get for him)

There aren't exactly exit interviews available to tell us why coaches leave for other jobs. The key info comes from the interviews, where they tell you what is important to them. I can tell you that the multi-year contract thing has never come up in interviews of candidates that CU has been serious about hiring. Those who have turned us down over the years had other reasons.

There you go, now 'Tini, find the coach who said "eff multi-year deals"

Multi year deals for assistants could help for sure, but there are more assistants around the country on 1 year deals than there are on multi year deals.I agree w/'tini,its largely overblown and used as an excuse for failures like dan hawkins.

Yes being terrible has made this more of a non-issue. So when we're good will be able to put this theory to more use.

Early 90s. I think 92ish probably before you were born.
Year I was born if it was '92

Anyway, we were good from the early-90's to the mid-2000's so I'm curious if the issue ever popped up for a coach leaving here because he wasn't guaranteed more than one year.

Is am assistant going to come out and say that? They will just say they found a better opportunity and thanks for the time in Colorado. I'm sure we had some coaches make a lateral move.
