College football rivalries are fun

like they said on that link... buncha rednecks. This would be about as bad as someone defacing the buffalo in front of folsom in my opinion

I think it's worse. It's easy to place a new buffalo in front of Folsom, but harder to replace 130 year old oak trees. At least teh owner of the property will get to make thousands of dollars selling framed slices of the trees...

The scary thing is that half of the posters think it was either a great idea or funny.

Pardon me if I'm not crying over these trees that have been dying for years. Claim "classless redneck UA fans" all you want, but I will not shed a tear over it. From the fanbase that gloats about urinating on Coach Bryant's grave and rolled the same trees when news of his passing reached Auburn. It's a God thing, I guess.

There are rednecks/idiots in both fanbases, so I am in no way taking the high ground, just wonder what would possess someone to decide to secretly poison trees. Pretty whacked out IMO.

Good article from a Bama website:

While ardent fandom can be an understandable cause to acts of excess, it is not carte blanche for one to behave as if rules of regular decency or the laws of the state itself do not apply. It is beneath the legacy of both institutions that anyone would commit an act of vandalism out of some misguided idea it somehow expresses their support. And to cross the line and commit an act of wholesale destruction of a recognized symbol of the school is simply unforgivable.

Toomer's Corner and Auburn's tradition of rolling it to mark the Tiger victories is something we Alabama fans mock mercilessly as a matter of course. Yet it should never be overlooked that the peculiar ceremony has become integral part of the rivalry we share with our cross-state foes. The loss of the trees would be a huge blow to the glorious cacophony of emotion that marks the Iron Bowl and the Alabama vs Auburn rivalry will be lessened for it.

I'm sure those trees could have died, gracefully, on their own, chucky. No need a-helpin' 'em.

I think he meant easily replaced. Cannot replicate 130 years growth in less that 130 years.

You mean we can grow a nice, fat, fully-developed chicken in 3 months but we can't accelerate the growth of a tree? What ARE they doing at CSU?

You should play the audio from that radio call-in show where the poison-er called in and blatantly told what he'd done....

When the host said something to the effect of, "Don't you think that's illegal?" his priceless response was "Do you think I care?"

And his final comment -- "Roll Damn Tide"

I have to say in all the years I've hated the very earth that the state of Nebraska occupies, it never crossed my mind to do something like this. Of course, there aren't any trees in Nebraska to poison, so that would not have been an option in the first place, but you get the idea.
