We are a little over a week away from the start of the CFB season, and while I might be part of a shrinking group on this site, I am getting excited. Feels like Bama and tOSU are the clear favorites to be playing for the Natty, but I think it's fairly wide open after that. Can Utah make a CFP run? Will USC go from 4-8 to CFP dark horse? Who in the top 10 now is likely to disappoint and who in the bottom half is likely to surprise and be a contender?

Preseason AP and Coaches Polls below.

SEC - 6
ACC - 5
B1G - 4
Pac 12 - 3
Big 12 - 3
Indy - 2
G5 - 2

Can AP voters get run for being unrealistic hayseed homers?

NU getting a single vote is so cute.

Preseason rankings are completely dumb and should be prohibited until W5 or so. Until then teams are ranked just about strictly on reputation.
I don't disagree on your take wrt relevance of preseason polls.

But regarding prohibition, I guess the NCAA, or more likely the conferences, could possibly stop the coaches from participating in the polls until later in the season, but I can't think of any practical mechanism that would stop the sports writers from doing so.

I've got agree with Finebaum here. Think ND is going to take a huge step back this year. I am also somewhat surprised Pitt is ranked.

At a quick glance:
OU and Pitt ranked way too high.
USC too low. The media thinking they will have trouble getting all the pieces to fit is a joke. Talent uber alles. Oh yeah, Riley's a great coach. 10-2 will be easy for them with their schedule.
Watch out for Arkansas. They have EIGHT home games and all their toughest opponents come to Fayetteville.

But don't forget - game 1 = Cincinnati (sounds worse than it is), BYU at BYU, Missouri St (Current coach = Bobby Petrino), Liberty biberty (weird ass team)

Agree with Finebaum that ND is severely overrated. Whatever the line is on that first game I'd lay the points (I think it's something like OSU -15). I'd also agree that Michigan is overrated.

A&M is obviously recruiting lights out but they're still a year or 2 away and have a big question mark at QB. I'd say Georgia is a bit overrated simply because they lost so much from that defense. The line for that Oregon game is way too high. But the schedule sets up well for them.

I think Clemson bounces back but they'll obviously need better QB play out of DJ.

Utah has a great shot to make the CFP even if they drop the opener against Florida, which I don't think they will.

As a darkhorse I like NC State.

I think Utah needs to beat Florida. They get USC mid season and Oregon at the end, probably twice in the Pac 12 CG. I think it’s likely they drop at least one of those

Appalachian State hosts North Carolina and travels to Texas A&M. In Sun Belt play they travel to Coastal Carolina and Marshall.
Frenso State travels to USC and Boise but the rest of their schedule is pretty doable.
Air Force's schedule isn't too daunting as Boise State visits but they end the season at SDSU's shiny new Snapdragon Stadium. Like Houston, their schedule strength might not hold up if they are in play for the CFP.

Oklahoma could have a big season since Baylor & KSU travels to Norman. They do have that trip to Ames but the Cyclones lost a lot from last season.

And who the heck gave Nebraska one vote in the AP poll?

Yea I was gonna bring up App State with their schedule but I just don't think they have the potential to run the table.

Back to Houston, McElroy was saying exactly that on his podcast, which is they have a team capable of going undefeated but would their schedule be enough. Probably not

It would be amazing if Appy State did run the table. The reason why I'd give Appy State a chance is that it's Texas A&M who might not take them seriously and the Aggies play Miami FL the following weekend.

Can't wait for the Fun Belt this season.
