Was named to the NAIA D2 All-American team as an honorable mention.

Glad to see he's doing well. Talk about a kid who got screwed over by the previous regime (and cost Hansen a redshirt in the process).

Ballenger's stats as a QB at CU:

8 of 12 (66.7%) for 118 yards (9.83 ypa / 14.75 ypc), with 1 TD and 0 INTs. This was against the 2008 Texas team that went 12-1 and the '08 Kansas team that went 8-5. After those two game appearances as a RS-Freshman, he never saw the field again.

As far as how his basketball season went:

The junior, from Nampa, led the Yotes in scoring this season, averaging nearly 16 points and five rebounds per game, while leading the Cascade Conference in steals per game.

Congrats to Matty B. He was a good kid who got a raw deal here.

Congrats to Matt! Were obviously going to keep hearing about players that *alkins ran out of the program for a couple more years.

He looked so good in that Texas game, I just wanted to see more. But all we got was more Cody. I know it wasn't the kid's fault, but that was hard to take.

I really despise dan hawkins.

No kidding. That touchdown pass he threw made me turn to my friend and say "we just found our quarter back". Only to have my buddy laugh and say "not unless he's adopted by the Hawkins' in the next week." I thought he was being a jackass. Turns out he was dead on.

I thought the same thing, but that was before I realized nepotism is considered "doing things the right way" in D II's world. Don't feel bad, I was suckered too....

I agree 100% with your post, and congrats to Matt.

Wasn't Matt's Dad a poster on either Scout or Rivals for a while too? Seemed like a good guy.

IDK, but now that I think about it, I remember a TV interview where MB and CH were interviewed about the QB "competition" before the 2008 season. MB's dememanor led me to believe he was very uncomfortable. I guess after watching the "competitions" between CH and everyone else, I now know why he was looking so odd. Body language tells a lot.

I don't doubt Hawkins' suckitude had a lot to do with it, but didn't he quit football because he's a better basketball player?

IMO that was the party line...the little I saw of him play led me to believe he was a better QB than CH. So if he was a an even better BB player, well, draw your own conclusions.

Nope. He was given very few reps during the 2008 season once they stopped playing him and then it continued into spring where he realized that he was the odd man out. (That was also the spring when the QB coaching and OC job was in flux after Helfrich bolted late for Oregon but stayed on.) When he committed to Hawkins from the Idaho prep ranks, he and his family were made promises that the father-son thing wouldn't be an issue and he'd get every opportunity. They didn't feel it was playing out that way and decided to go closer to home and play basketball. Remember, the plan was to redshirt Hansen in 2009 anyway, so it would have made all the sense in the world for Ballenger and Hawkins to be the main competition for the starting QB job that spring.

So is Ballenger now playing both football and basketball?

So is Ballenger now playing both football and basketball?

Nope. Just basketball. Just saying that he didn't leave CU because he wanted to pursue a hoops dream. He pursued a hoops dream because he needed to get the hell out of Hawkins' program.

Well, like everyone else I'm glad he's landed on his feet, it just seems like he turned his lemons into orange juice.

I will never understand why Hawk decided to just ignore Ballenger when it was clear Cody wasn't getting the job done. He didn't look amazing in the Texas game (almost threw a couple of picks), but he looked like he had a good arm and got the ball out of there pretty fast. The story about how Tyler needed to play because the OL was so terrible so mobility was a premium and that's why Tyler jumped over Matt seemed like a bunch of BS.
