Corn Controversy

SINKRATZ

PhD in Analogy
Nebraska has nothing on the Iowa / Iowa State rivalry when it comes to corn. This from an ESPN http://espn.go.com/college-football/story/_/id/6889208/controversial-cy-hawk-trophy-replaced article about the new Cy-Hawk trophy for the game winner....

The new trophy designed for the winner of the annual Iowa-Iowa State gridiron showdown was scrapped Tuesday as organizers acknowledged it had too much to do with corn and not nearly enough to do with football.

With the Iowa Corn Growers Association as the new sponsor of the series between Iowa State's Cyclones and Iowa's Hawkeyes, the new trophy was drawn up as a farm family huddled around a bushel of corn. The design was a nod to the state's deep agricultural roots and, of course, corn is a primary staple around here.

This was my favorite....

It was unveiled Friday at the state fair. And everyone pretty much hated it, likening it to a garage sale leftover or something from the Precious Moments catalog.

Here's a picture:

There is no corn in that tub, it's all meth

They should just call the trophy the Corn Cob Cup and forget trying to be grandeous

B1G schools are a little too obsessed with trophies, but this might be a case where it's seen as more of a rivalry by the Cyclowns than the Iowa fans. Trophies can be cool for a serious rivalry game. However, Ohio State and Illinois play for the "Illibuck Trophy", Minnesota and Penn State play for the "Governor's Victory Bell", Indiana and Michigan State for the "Old Brass Spittoon" etc. etc. etc. I guess it can be cool, but it seems a little overboard when you're playing a school 3 states away that is hardly a true rival. The newest one to the fold is Iowa/Nebraska playing for the "Heroes Trophy".

I liked this one:

"Nobody liked it. I think the best comment I heard was, 'That's going to the losers, right?' " said Liz Ulin, a 23-year-old senior studying health science.

Poor ISU. Their rivalry with Iowa is getting replaced by the Nubs. Once they are out of the Big 12 their transformation into CSU will be complete.

What a screwed up statuette. Man on his knees in front of a bushel of whatever, little boy with his hands in his pants ala Al Bundy, woman ready to bolt. I can hear Kenny Rogers singing, "You picked a fine time to leave me, Lucille...."

Should have just gone literal. A big ear of corn would have worked just fine and cost a lot less to design.
