I don't think so. This makes me ill. MacII, I don't think you get it yet. CSU is not our rival. Do we want to beat them? yes! Does it mean more than beating, say Arkansas St? Sure it does. Maybe even a little more than beating a Hawaii or New Mexico but they are NOT our "Chief Rival"!

Utah may not be a rivalry right now but I think it is more important to beat them than it is to beat CSU.

I didn't think Charleston Southern put up enough of a fight to qualify as a rival....

The results of Rock bottom don't taste so good.

That said, until we re-establish the talent gap, I don't mind HCMM doing this. Got to match CSU's intensity since we can't cruise by on talent alone right now. Plus, seriously, we really don't have any rivals. The team has got to hate someone.

Well Mike Mac makes a good point, if CSU is not our primary rival right now, who is? Until we have been in the Pac for a few more seasons, the ewe will have to do.
That said, I believe either of the Arizona schools have a good chance of becoming that rival. For some reason I really despise them in Fball and Bball.

It appeared to me that the team had the most fire vs UCLA. Maybe they hate them?

I didn't want it to come to this, but it has.

Nebraska? The current students and players couldn't care less about the Nubs unless they happen to be in that small minority that grew up as Buff fans and started hating the Fuskers as part of their birthright.

Utah? There have been some meaningful games within the scope of where each program is. CU kept them out of the Pac-12 Championship 2 years ago. But there hasn't been a situation where a lot was on the line for both of us. Also, we may be border states but we're pretty darn far away from each other (Boulder to SLC is about the same as Charlotte to Philadelphia, for example - over 500 miles). But we do play Thanksgiving week every year and are traveling partners. Odds are that a rivalry will develop over time if the Pac-12 keeps its current size and alignment.

Anyone else in the Pac-12? Not at all. Important games. Programs we have to get over. More vital wins to the success of our season than any non-conference game. But can't call any of them a "rival".

CSU? Play every year. Lots of emotion from each team. More message board chatter than any other game generates. Event that gets the most local press coverage. Students on both sides circle the date. In-state fans of both teams talk about the game with each other. It's a rivalry, folks. It's a ****ty rivalry and it's hard to figure out how it is a good thing for CU to have this game be what it is, but it's a rivalry.

The lambs are not going to be a push over anymore for what its worth. McElwhine has turned the corner up there with them, and going bowling will be a huge advantage to them going forward. Luckily the more success he has in Ft. Fun, the shorter his time there will be.

Until we develop a conference rival then I think we need the emotional push for that game. It will never be our super bowl as it is for them, but we do not have a football rivalry at this point. I understand we all want to call out USC and make them our red letter game, or even for Utah to develop into the rivalry it was at the beginning of the 20th century, but neither are to that point yet. They will always be our little brother and always want the things we have. Honestly I believe for most of the posters here the game's location has given more reason to diminish the opponent and the rivalry status than the actual game itself. If it was on campus, where it should be, it would be much better.

Horrible to think about and a crappy one at best, but it is what it is.

Beating the lammies will allow us to move up the chain and find a worthy rival. However, at this point, CSU is what we've got. Sucks doesn't it?

Sorry I'm having a hard time taking seriously after these vaunted wins...

-Cal Poly (FCS, 6-6)
-UTEP (CUSA, 2-9)
-Hawaii (MWC, 0-11)
-Wyoming (MWC, 5-6)
-Nevada (MWC, 4-7)
-New Mexico (MWC, 3-8)

We'd win 8+ with that schedule

Its more a result of conference realignment than anything else. If the cost of moving to the Pac-12 is CSU becomes our primary rival for a few years, then I am more than ok with it.

I doubt we beat wyoming. I also am not positive we would beat Nevada. The 15 practices and bowl experience for the team and the recruiting advantage from going bowling can not be understated. The lambs got to 6 wins. More than we have had since 2007.

THey've also played in a non-AQ conference, there's a big difference between playing one or two BCS teams a year vs. nine or ten, just ask Utah. Here are their wins...

UTEP - #185 in Sagarin Rankings
Hawaii - #133 in Sagarin Rankings
Wyoming - #136 in Sagarin Rankings
Nevada - #105 in Sagarin Rankings
New Mexico - #151 in Sagarin Rankings
Colorado - #80 in Sagarin Rankings

Sorry but all of those teams are dog **** and I'm not going to take a team that's best win is over a team ranked #105 in a ****-tier conference seriously. The Sagarin Rankings have CU with the #8 toughest schedule...it has CSU with the #100 toughest schedule...

The Utah as a rival thing is weird to me. I just dont buy into it.

The truth is we don't have a rival yet in the PAC. So I'd agree its CSU by default now. A rivalry can emerge when we get better but there is a team that always beats us, can't get past. Like it was with NU. Or it's a team that every year is the team that wrecks our season and are asses about it after the game. You have to have some hate and some respect.

Additionally, on a local level, I don't know anyone that is an alum from another PAC school that I trade barbs with. But, there are a lot of CSU fans that I do which also makes it fun. Even if a PAC team arrives we will play CSU regularly and they will always be something akin to a rival. If they started beating us regularly how would you feel about them?

CSU is our rival, whether we like it or not.

Actually, let me amend that...

The term "rival" can have several meanings. In the context of whether they are the team/school we want to beat the most, they qualify. If you're looking at "rival" as a synonym for "equal", then they don't come close.

Last year we lose most of those games.

This year, yes we beat Wyoming and we curb stomp Nevada. They aren't very good.

CSU has had some success against us because we are their super bowl. Their entire team focuses on the Buffs the entire off season, their fan base cares very little about any other game (including Wyo) and their season is valued based on how they did against the Buffs.

Unfortunately we are down right now in talent and otherwise. As a result if they play their game of the year and we aren't sharp they have a shot to win it. Return us to a level where we are competitive in the PAC talentwise (middle of the road) and with any kind of coaching we will be double digit winners.

I can understand some of where M2 is coming from right now. He is familiar with CSU and knows some of their staff and respects them. He also knows that we do need to take them seriously at this point to avoid stumbling at the start of the season. He saw what happened with last years team and is smart enough to want not to repeat it.

All that said when the Buffs return to being a decent program CSU reverts to being a nice, if annoying warm up game.

I am having a hard time following your logic, let me see if I have this right. CSU beats Wyoming 52-22 and Nevada 38-17, we beat CSU by two TDs but would be unable to beat Wyoming and Nevada.....okay, got it.

CSU was a much different team after that bama game. The light came on for a lot of their kids.

6-6 is a crappy conference and they didn't even play Fresneck and they turned the corner? They have not beat a team that is considered almost good. Tini is right, CU would have 8+ wins with that schedule.

I'm kind of agreeing with tini here. CSU still sucks. They just got shut out, for gods sakes.

I have to agree with 'Tini that we'd win at least 8 games with that schedule. Bama and Boise would be the only ones that would really frighten me.

Reading into this, Mac is saying, "We aren't good enough to have a PAC 12 rival." I think it is meant as a motivational tool for himself, the staff, the players and the administration. Hell, even donors. He's saying, "Until EVERYONE steps up, this is what we are." I don't believe he wants csu to be our long term rival.

DUDE! Did you just identify CU as one of their wins this year??? WTF! I have never dropped the Neg Rep hammer before, but how in the name of all that is holy, can you make that mistake???

I think he was showing the difference to our sag ranking vs the craptastic teams CSU has beaten.
