CSU with a big class today - 24 recruits

Chris Dempsey had an article earlier this week slobbering all over their recruiting class, even though it is ranked all the way at #80 on Rivals even with 24 players in it.

Still, they pulled in 3 or 4 JUCO's, including the RB who cheated on his ACT's a few years back (Kapri Bibbs).

Pretty important class for them.

I guess I'm not really sold on McElwain still. That being said, they look like they're going to try and start following a blueprint that many other programs have used for success. JUCOs, laughably weak OOC, and special admission standards for athletes.

Who can blame them. They have a 43,000 seat on campus stadium to fill and pay for. Can't do it all with wedding receptions and Lady Gaga concerts you know.

The local radio guys here have a massive man crush on McElweenie. The other day they picked up on that Dempsey article and a Henderson piece bashing CU's class (including such tidbits as Parsons decommitting because McIntyre didn't call him - surprising since he decommitted before Embree was fired) and proceeded to produce as revolting an hour of radio as you have ever heard in your life. Apparently CU didn't even get any visits from blue chip recruits this year, which shows you how terrible this class was (not entirely untrue, if somewhat oversold), while CSU had a RB commit when they didn't have a spot for him, which shows the greatness of McElweenie as a recruiter.

I may have to drop them a line and point out where the classes actually ended up ranked.... :lol:

The class looks solid, but not overwhelming by any stretch. I think McElwain's hands were tied a bit with this class due to the previous staffs failure to create any real depth at the DL position. 6 of the 24 signees were defensive lineman (3 JUCOS) and were desperately needed. The same can be said of the WR position which is really thin going into next season and had to be addressed by signing a number of guys (4) in this class.

OT Nowland looks to be the best overall prospect out of this class.
WR Masters and WR Long appear to be the players most likely to contribute early on offense.
QB Stevens is the guy that looks like a sleeper to me and is probably the player I the most excited about watching develop. But that is probably just me.

With two classes to evaluate now, it seems clear that McElwain's plan is to build from the inside out and to focus on kids with D-1 body types that can add and carry weight. He seems to be building with a longer term approach and really has only gone the junior college route to address glaring deficiencies in the roster. With this being McElwain's first full recruiting cycle - this has the look of a building block class that will hoepfully get CSU competitive in the MWC. However, McElwain and the staff will have to step it up going forward if CSU is ever going to start putting the same type of atheletes on the field as Boise State and others in the conference.

I think you guys should never really worry about the offense under McElwain. Defense is going to make or break your program going forward.

Weren't part of the DL depth problems also due to a combination of the gay bashing incident and one or two DL recruits not qualifying in the last couple years?

Definitely contributed to the problem. Arguably our two best defensive ends left the program last off-season. Nordly Capi was kicked off the team and expelled for that incident. CJ James transferred prior to the season.

I am also starting to hear a few rumblings that OL Joey O'Connor will be transferring from Ohio State to CSU. Nothing confirmed. Would have 4 seasons to play 3 and would use up one of this years available schollys. Would be a nice addition to this class if you want to look at it that way. That is - if he is healthy.

Agreed. Micro fracture surgery on a kid that size is never a good thing. Really hope he can make a comeback wherever he ends up. Kid was a real talent coming out of high school.

Lots of numbers of CSU this year but it looks like they are even projecting development a lot more than we are. I know they are excited about the class because sheep fans are always believing that they are doing better than they are.

It does look like they have fewer high risk guys than they have taken in the past, from what we know not a lot of qualifier risk in the group or character issues. Might be enough talent to help move them up into the middle of the MWC but we should still never lose to them based on talent when we play.

The problems at CSU and CU have been pretty similar over the last few years. Poor QB play and poor DL play. Until one of us get those positions resolved, no one will be embarrasing anybody.

As pathetic as we have been there is no excuse for CU to lose to the sheep. As bad as our talent has been how many guys on the CSU roster would or should be on the CU 2-deep. Last year I'm thinking no more than 5-6.

Last year in what is easily the worse season for a CU football team in my (or even DBTs) lifetime we only lost the game because of a pathetic coaching job were JE and EB failed to make some simple adjustments that would have resulted in us winning the game and likely winning easily.

Honestly, I watched a lot of MWC football last season and CU's collection of talent right now would be in the middle of the pack in the conference. I don't think the gap is nearly as large as you want to believe it is. Not trying to be a troll, but come on man! Fresno State had that CU team down 55-7 - at half!

This is a false thing you are saying. I'm not going down the "star ratings don't matter" nonsense again. I think we can all agree that CU's coaching last year was so bad that it under-represented the talent on the field in a dramatic and horrifying fashion.
